🌅 Let’s go on a journey... This is my story that has spanned over 7 years and counting. This is my honest truth to show you that I have been where you are and that I still battle daily even with all of my experience and education 🔸I have tried the fad diets and extreme exercise routines 🔹I have been upwards of an unhealthy for me 140lbs and I have been a drastic and extreme 117lbs (I am only 5’2”) 🔸 I have restricted my calories to the point of exhaustion and migraines 🔹 I have worked out over three times a day 🔸 I have cut out food groups and favorite foods 🔹 I lived off of powders, supplements and fake food 🔸 I WAS MISERABLE!! All this to say that it was not sustainable! It was all wreaking havoc on my body. I would get sick and my body would hurt all the time. This was no way to live. I was building myself into what I believed “society”(aka social media) expects of a healthy body. I tried to conform to the latina look and the athletic look. I tried to match the fitness models on the screen. I was doing everything and anything to be anyone but ME. When I finally realized this is when I was ready to make the real changes. I was ready to step into my own power and strength. I took my health, my fitness and my lifestyle in my own mind. I learned what I needed to do to be healthy. I learned what I needed to do to be strong. I learned what I needed to do to be happy for ME! I’m continuously learning and growing, it doesn’t end here. But this is why I have chosen to do what I do, to help other women like me to love themselves and live their best and healthiest lives. I want to not only help my clients reach their goals but I want to teach them what to expect and what to do to stay successful. This is my project about Holocaust Survivors and their grandchildren. I thought I’d be able to continue creating images but the world has said otherwise so here they are. I began this because my grandmother is a Holocaust survivor and I wanted to focus on the beauty of the lives these individuals created beyond the trauma of their past but the meaning of this project feels like it’s changing. I think it’s really important to put this discourse into the world right now, not only because the elderly are heavily effected by Covid, but also because many of the people pictured are concentration camp survivors and survivors of a fascist government. They were interested in having their photograph taken because they wanted to solidify their stories and make sure that history wasn’t forgotten. It’s so devastating to see what’s happening in the world and in ICE detention centers. It feels like we didn’t learn from the past and we’re letting those who have survived down. I’m not really sure what to do with these images-I’ve been keeping them off insta because they feel so sacred- or how to fully explain how I feel about them in relation to the current state of our country but I know they’re important. I was an assistant on the Glee tour in 2009, and then I moved to LA in 2010 to work on set. I ran into Naya at a bar - we hadn’t seen each other in a year. I didn’t really have any friends in LA yet. She was wearing overalls and a bra. That’s it. And she was killing it. Obviously. She said, “Let’s hang out,” grabbed my phone and punched her number in. And so it began. She took me under her wing. Brought me into her crew. It didn’t matter that I was a lowly assistant at the time. When I think of my first four years in Los Angeles, I think of Naya. Being in Naya’s presence made me feel larger than life. It was like anxious Megan absorbed Naya’s fearless spirit by osmosis. When you were around her, you just . . . bloomed. Anyone in Naya’s crew had a feisty, witty, 110 pound bodyguard on their side. She always had a mischievous glimmer in her eye and she always knew more than she let on. She was the rock of her family. She had a knack for seeing through someone’s bullshit, and she knew if I was lying when I said I was okay. She also had a knack for dropping a filthy one-liner, exiting the room and leaving us with our jaws on the floor. She didn’t know how fucking beautiful she was, but I believe she knew how talented she was, and I loved that about her. Watching Naya perform everyday, whether she was on Glee set knocking out a 3 page monologue in one take, or belting Amy Winehouse in her car, or performing a lazy striptease during our talent shows - it never grew old, she always took my breath away. People grow apart, drift in and out of your life. I always figured she would drift back into mine. Naya was a force. I feel lucky to have known and loved her. Tell your people you love them. He died 23 years ago (!!🤯) and I still get such a kick out of how we have the same legs (& feet & nose & fivehead & mood swings—thanks, dad 😅🥰) Still to this day, in certain special moments when the sun shines just right and the breeze blows just so, I’m instantly back on that sailboat, hanging my feet over the edge waiting for it to list so far to one side that my toes can touch the water even if only for a second. Those days on Lake Pepin when we’d read that book together with the beautiful illustrations of the ship, the sea, the dolphins leaping and flipping and twirling and dancing. I still look for dolphins every time I’m near the ocean. I don’t need to see them to think of you; the searching is enough. There are times I still sob in that gasping for air kinda way when I think of you lying in that hospital bed, comatose but still very much aware of your beloved daughter’s absence. Could you tell I wasn’t there? Did you decide, on some level, that it wasn’t worth hanging on another day? I don’t know the science (at all) to say whether these questions have any standing but I do believe that souls know things our brains never will. And maybe yours knew that I love you & knew the reasons I wasn’t there & maybe your death had nothing to do with giving up & everything to do with it just happens. And maybe those moments were filled with far more grace and love than you had felt in a long long time & maybe, for possibly the first time, you knew that you weren’t alone. And that everything would be okay. And maybe it took many years and being with Gabe during her final days for me to see, first hand, that the love and grace surrounding death is far greater than everyone in a room combined. That the dying are never alone, no matter how isolated they might feel or how much they might suffer. And maybe that’s especially the case right now, as so many are forced to suffer and die in isolation while their loved ones want nothing more than to be at their bedsides holding their hands. And maybe that isolation is the cruelest part of our current situation—and maybe love transcends it all. My heart is broken. I can’t even begin to describe how incredible Naya Rivera is...was. Not only was she one of the most talented people I’ve ever met, she was a friend. A good friend. She always stood true to her truth and I’ve never meet anyone like her because she was without a doubt one of a kind. A true gem. Plus to mention, breathtakingly stunning from the outside down to her core. I love you Naya. Always and forever. You are loved by many and will be missed more than you could have ever imagined.
