Ankle Mobility💫 . Okay- so many of you requested ankle mobility help... which I kinda feel like I covered fairly recently sooo I kinda feel like you guys aren’t seeing my -ish (hashtag algorithm). . Just a heads up if you wanna select those notifications 🥰 . 💃🏻 The ankle should be a relatively mobile joint and needs to be able to react quickly to changes in direction/terrain/etc. . 👉🏻Issue arise when the ankle gets locked down due to injury, repetitive use or non use. Compensations may start to leak upstream to the knee and hips. . Many folks report limitations in dorsiflexion (toes towards ahead) and I don’t know a single person who hadn’t at least rolled their ankle- creating some issues with inversion and eversion which tend to get “sticky”. . Issues with dorsiflexion mag present with: 🔻limited squat mobility 🔻a sensation of falling back or forward in your squat 🔻pinching sensation in the front of the ankle 🔻Achilles pain 🔻shin splints . Did you know that dirt is an antidepressant? Have you ever taken a good sniff of your hands after gardening? Or even, smelled the warm earthiness of your dog’s paws? The relationship between humans and the earth itself is profound and biological. When we harness this by stepping with our bare feet or digging with our hands, it’s a healing and energising experience. Clint Ober, who has spent a career studying the benefits of earthing (or grounding) recommends 30 minutes a day of being outdoors bare foot, to reduce free radicals that damage our healthy cells. If you can’t do this safely, you can lay on an earthing mat, or sheet. I’ve got one myself. By reducing inflammation, earthing can help you sleep better, improve healing, reduce chronic pain and help to combat stress and anxiety by helping us to discharge flight/fight responses. Ober points out that there is scientific research to prove these benefits, 21 peer reviewed, published studies that examine the health benefits, so by no means just a theory or a concept. You’ve probably tried it yourself and enjoyed the benefits without realising; we’ve all taken our shoes off to feel the warm, crunchy sand between our toes or refreshing, dewy grass beneath the soles of our feet, next time you get the chance, try consciously appreciating that feeling. - @leontaylorgb on Instagram

Inter and Intra muscular Coordination is an area of particular interest to me. Seeing these fasciculations (involuntary muscle tremors) in so many of my clients makes me question the popular theory that strength or mobility is all we need to train for clients in pain. I put a lot of clients in specific joint angles (usually like running) so that I can see what happens when certain muscles are asked to contract in an isometric like fashion (or to resist lengthening) like they should when running. In clients with pain, I will often see a system that seems incapable of coordinating those contractions efficiently. (I don’t observe the same things in healthy non-painful clients) So then I’m questioning how good that muscle actually is at acting as a shock observer and taking some load off the painful tendon or painful joint. If these inefficiencies are there in simple movements like the above, then I’m pretty sure they are there in things like running....it’s just happening too fast for us to observe. The cool thing is that the test is also the fix a lot of the time. We are training the motor skill and strength together and the really cool thing is that pain seems to change very quickly and strength also goes through the roof when the system starts to re-learn these coordination patterns that it seems to have lost along the way. Pain changes everything. And I think persistent pain has a very big effect on how we move and not just how strong we are. So the first thing I try to change are inefficient motor patterns and poor inter & intra muscular coordination. When we retrain that in clients, they often report that their pain is gone and they are moving way better. And strength training becomes way easier and more potent too. Some people think it’s all about the nervous system. Some people think it’s all about the strength of the peripheral tissues. I think it’s all about the interaction and the intersection between both and so both should be trained. Yes, Yes it can!! Just like your body needs food, it needs a break too. It needs you to stop counting your steps, just like you have to stop counting calories. Your body needs you to quit the workouts, that you know deep inside of you aren’t as fun as you say they are! Right now, everywhere you look there is a new home workout to do this that or the other, but I promise they will do you very little good! If your wearing a smart watch, you should take it off, we don’t need to know every detail of our bodies function. For millions of years, humans have survived without knowing their daily step count, why do we need to know it now? I know for me, my Fitbit is what lead me in to relapse. You might tell yourself that you are checking the calories just bc you’re “making sure you’re eating enough” but before long it could turn it to obsessing over every step! By stopping exercising for a little while, your body gets the break it needs, and you will start to notice that the exercise was more Ed driven than you ever thought! I know not doing it Is tough! In the moment when your Ed is desperate to exercise, find something really fiddly to do like a puzzle, and try to keep your mind focused on something else, until your ed quietens down. There are plenty of reasons why exercise is good, but If you have an Ed, most of those reasons go out of the window, and it becomes no more than a way of burning calories . The idea isn’t that you never exercise again, its that when you are ready to, you do it on a way that’s beneficial for your body. It took almost a year and a half off exercise for me to find a way of doing it healthily! But that year off was totally worth it! It is so much better to be able to exercise in a way that is healthy, and eat until you are satisfied, than have to count every calorie, and do x horrible workouts a week!! Exercise addiction is not fun, but I promise you don’t have to live the rest of your life trapped inside that horrible box!! I dare you, to start tomorrow by telling yourself that you are allowed to eat as much as you like (above minimums obvs!) and just let your body rest! ❗️A 10/10 fashion statement on your foot may be causing you 10/10 long term damage to your bodies functionality. ❗️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’ve been following me since September you’ll know I’ve transitioned to being completely barefoot and I won’t ever go back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These photos are 173 days apart and I could show my current progress in May, but I want to show just what 5 months of being completely barefoot and using @correcttoes has done for me and potentially what it can do for you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Prior to this change I was wearing traditional shoes such as: Adidas Rainbow Sandals Nike Flyknit Racers Aldo Dress Shoes Toms ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ All of these shoes are VERY popular and are very abundant but lack a lot of what our feet need. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our society has changed our footwear standards by having our feet fit the shoe and not our shoe fit our feet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In just 5 months of being barefoot and focusing on the functional health of my feet I have: 1. Developed an arch with ZERO arch support. 2. My toes have spread allowing for natural arch formation. 3. Anterior pelvic tilt (butt sticking out) has immensely gone down by removing elevation of the shoe. 4. Knee cave in due to foot pronation (flat feet) has gone away and my bodies ability to use my hips and foot for functional movement has increased. 5. Deep squat hip pain has been largely reduced. 6. Propioception has largely increased allowing for conscious heel striking and awareness of walking habits. 7. We’re sold on the idea that if a shoe has a check or stripes, they’re automatically the most optimal. Unfortunately many major brands make NARROW shoes that contort our foot into an UNNATURAL position & hinder proper mechanics. Long term this poor foot position can lead to problem technique for lifters (such as increased foot pronation & decreased knee control aka valgus collapse) and also a host of foot issues (such as plantar fasciitis). . Weightlifting shoes: unfortunately there aren’t many great options at this time. The @reebok & Do Win shoes are wider than most but they are far from an optimal width toe box. @nike & @adidas are still very narrow. At this time it’s basically “do the best we can with what is available” as a raised heel shoe is still needed with Olympic lifting. Hopefully one day we will see a real wide toe box weightlifting shoe. . Powerlifting shoes: it may surprise you the classic Chuck Taylor is narrow. Vans are a little better and a reason why you’ll see many wearing those. Fortunately there are new shoes to market that are strong enough to hold up to heavy lifting, wide enough for your feet & offer the benefits of barefoot training like the @bearfootshoes Ursus. . CrossFit: the popular Nano from Reebok is wider than other “functional fitness” shoes but still isn’t wide enough. There are fortunately other companies that are making good shoes in this space like @xeroshoes . Casual shoes: wide toe box shoes are exploding in this area & the @feelgrounds have to be my favorite. Finally you’re seeing GOOD LOOKING casual shoes that are “foot friendly” (sorry to those who liked walking around in the 5-finger shoes - personally I’m not a fan🤷🏽‍♂️). .
