Iommi was one of the first guitar players I had found who had to overcome physical challenges that I was able to relate to in some way. Thoughts on kneeling to the American Flag: The month of August is a poignant reminder of those we have lost in far away combat zones, this man is but one example. Collin T. Thomas was killed in action on 18 August, 2010, while we were assaulting a sizable enemy position in Eastern Afghanistan. That night was not unlike any other, we were targeting an enemy network and we had found fighters who were heavily armed. That did not sway our resolve and determination to hunt them down in order to save American lives. We loaded the 47s that night knowing we were going into a situation that would likely involve some type of gun battle, and everyone onboard knew the risks. The assault force departed the airfield that night under cover of darkness, as AH64s were attacking the enemy position. As our aircraft was approaching, I could see the treeline out one of the small circular windows in the 47. This was the treeline where the Army Apaches had the enemy pinned down, and we were landing to assault the position. Our 47 landed in a field and the ramp immediately went down, enabling us to run off and set up maneuver positions. The gunfire escalated quickly, and the team of SEALs and Rangers bounded forward while providing covering fire. Within minutes one of the Ranges, SGT Martin Lugo, was killed as we approached the treeline, the enemy fighters who remained were concealed in a ditch that was obscured by trees and vegetation. Two other men took AK47 rounds in their ballistic gear to my right, knocking them to the ground. We knew the only way to counter was to flank the enemy fighters, and Collin stepped forward to lead the maneuver element. I watched his dark figure enter the treeline, and the enemy sprayed fire in his direction. Collin was struck by several rounds and died instantly. The point of the story - these men were selfless patriots who did nothing for themselves. They believed in their team and what the American Flags on their sleeves represented. Happy Mead Day from myself, @honeytreemeadery and @allwisemeadery Here are a handful of reasons why mead is my favorite drink: Mead is the world’s oldest alcohol as far as we know and was originally made in Ancient Egypt while beer was becoming popular in Ancient Sumeria. It’s made with three simple ingredients: honey, water, yeast. Depending on how long its fermented and what other ingredients its made with, Mead might feel more like wine or more like beer, and there are an insane number of ingredients you can add to mead to make it take on a whole new character as a honey-based alcohol. Imagine the number of varieties of wine and craft beer out there. Combine them. Double it. That’s how many different forms mead can take on. Popularized in recent years by celebrities like Dylan Sprouse and his All Wise Meadery in brooklyn (of which I am a club member), amazing local meaderies like Honeytree Meadery (Nashville’s first and only) as well as tv shows like Vikings and Game of Thrones and a resurgence of interest in old European history, mead is making a huge cultural and commercial comeback. Additionally, mead-making has become part of a massive incentive to SAVE THE BEES!!!! Mead is made from honey, so bee hives and healthy habitats for our buzzy friends are essential. Much like how Ted’s Montana Grill helped save the Bison population, Mead-makers are huge players in reviving bee populations in apiaries across the world! Because of this reason, mead is hailed as being a completely vegan-friendly alcoholic beverage. In Norse Mythology, Mead is attributed as being the drink of wisdom, knowledge, and poetry. It’s said to grant its drinker long life and good fortune, but you must be weary! In the Poetic Edda, Odin is attributed as the King of Singers. For this reason, in the origin story of the Mead of Poetry, this mead poured from Odin’s mouth as an eagle into Asgard’s vats after he retrieved it in a rather deceitful yet ingenious way. However, in order to ward off the Giant pursuing him, some not-so-inspiring mead also found its way out the Eagle’s ass. It’s been over a year with no activities, I know things could always be much much worse and I realize just about everyone and their dog has gone through this injury before or knows someone that has but I gotta say this has been a GRIND and I’m so pumped to get past all that shit with no major hiccups! 50 years ago this week, a little-known English singer-songwriter played his first club show in the United States, at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. His name was Elton John, and that show made him a star overnight. A few months later, his first US tour would take him to New York City, where he and his band of bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson would play a live radio broadcast from A&R Studios. That broadcast would become the incendiary live album 17-11-70 (11-17-70 in the US, but were outnumbered on the numbering). The 17-11-70 record has been one of the great influences on my musicianship over the years. So it is with great delight that I announce I will be performing the album in its entirety as a live broadcast (over YouTube rather than the radio) with the stellar rhythm section of @michaelwubass (bass & vocals) and @dcollinsman (drums & vocals). We’ll perform on the 50th anniversary of the event, Tuesday, November 17th, 2020, at 7pm. My good friend (and Ithaca live music radio host extraordinaire) Dan Cole will act as MC and man behind the soundboard. As we head into colder months and we continue to face the isolation and fear brought on by the pandemic and other world events, I will be proud to share some of my favorite music with you. Roger Tullgren became somehow well known in 2007 when he convinced Employment Services in Sweden to classify his addiction to heavy metal music as a disability. Due to this diagnosed condition, he was not able to stop listening to metal or attend shows, and received a pension from the State until 2012. . Three years later, as soon as I heard his story, I traveled to Hässleholm in order to meet him. We talked about metal, darts, to be beaten up and the welfare. Although we planned to make a little movie together, it finally never happened, and sometimes I think about how he might be doing these days. Today is his birthday. . He fought the law and he won. .
