Some of us still think twice before wearing certain outfits and posting certain pictures, some of us are still trying to be fully confident about our bodies. And, people don’t even think once before passing hurtful comments and making insensitive comparisons about physique and bodies. Skinny shaming is as much an issue as fat shaming, but people often forget it and pass comments in the name of fun and jokes. It never dawns upon them that in their mockery they might be shattering someone’s confidence and making someone self conscious. There’s a very fine line between being concerned about someone’s health and mocking them for their body type, which people often cross. Talk about body positivity, fitness and health, but don’t shame anyone for their body type coz ALL BODIES ARE BEAUTIFUL. Your mental health is never considered when starting a diet. @chr1styharrison calls diet culture “The Life Thief.” A reference that impacts me at my core. Nothing is more true. Diets, restriction and the CULTURE AND COMMUNITY that surround it (even in the sneakiest of places - think gyms, studios, Facebook groups, friends, family gatherings, hair salons…all culprits) all have one thing in common. They take away TIME that you can never get back. Time is a non-renewable resource. In the past this used to really upset me, thinking back to all the time I wasted thanks to diet culture - but I have reframed it as experience and the lessons it taught me are invaluable. Which is why I am 🗣 them to you on all platforms now. Diet culture does not prioritize your mental health. Why does that matter? You may ask? Because when the diet ends, and you “successfully” suffered through the restrictive phase, without having received any education as to why you followed it, when you attempt to resume normalcy and simply don’t feel good - think, re-feeding syndrome (literally referring your body and shocking your system tossing off your electrolytes and digestive tract), confusion because the rules are gone, guilt, shame, feeling like a failure, confusion…you are left with just one thought, I should just start over and do it again because “it worked when I was on it.” This cycle is really hard to break. The truth is, each of these diets that pulls out carbs or a food group in general pulls away from your brains ability to even THINK clearly. The deep caloric deficits begin to shut down processes in your body that are deemed “unnecessary for survival” over time. Your mental health suffers thanks to isolation, confusion, body discomfort, physical discomfort and a lack of resources to process information. And all of this is thanks to a $72+ billion industry profiting off a belief that weigh loss is all that matters. All this to tell you. I understand + there is a way to break this cycle. Have you ever tasted home made olives and antipasto capsicum on a cheese platter? What about real (I mean real) dill pickles? Or sour, garlicky fermented hot sauce? Lacto fermentation is a way of storing veggies in salt brine that transforms the humble carrot or fennel into something else entirely. Every time Ive got a spare few veggies that I wont get around to cooking, I chuck them in a jar with some salt and water, and two weeks later Ive got a crunchy, tangy side that adds colour, flavour and probiotics to my lunch. To be honest, when were feeling lazy, well put all the ferments on the table with a handful of crackers, some lacto fermented eggs, and some home made labneh cheese (see the yoghurt illustration for how to make this), and create an instant feast. We know inside that our health has something to do with the health of the air, soil, water and animals that we rely on. While short termism punishes the environment around us for monetary gain, we lose out in the end. It seems like covid fell out of the blue, but a pandemic like this (or worse) has been on the cards for a while. Governments have been warned by scientists and international bodies that industrial farming and our rates of deforestation put us at a high risk of disease. The good news is that those same scientists and international bodies have made a plan to avoid future pandemics. It takes the form of #onehealth. This has been around for a while, thanks to the @who and the @fao, and is an infinitely sensible guide for governments to follow. It is based on common sense: a healthy planet means healthy people. This is quite a revolution to our society, Im sure youd agree. But we know it to be true. Each of these suggestions can be acted upon on an individual level as well as a policy level. We can support local farmers and boycott supermarket meat and dairy. We can fight to save the forests near our homes. We can foster a relationship with and love of the natural world in ourselves and our children. We dont know how bad this or the next pandemic will be, but we know what needs to happen to stop them.
