Before the initial landscaping, you couldn’t see over the blackberry bushes in the entire back yard. So, I did a thing. I purchased an incredible 1950’s Cape here in Glen Ridge and am in the beginning stages of 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 renovating it to meet my family’s needs. This home has most of its original details [original appliances - the oven still works!, no central air, Formica countertops, metal cabinets 🤯] and it’s about to be completely gutted. While I love the nostalgia and charm, this home isn’t functional for my family and business’s needs. This is going to be a massive project and I’m taking you all along for the ride. As a Designer, I take part in these types of renos often, but this time - it’s all for me. I realized today that I’ve never posted ‘before pics’ of the #fishhawkhouse, so allow me to indulge you (these were taken during our first drive-by of the house when we were scoping it out). She sits on over an acre of land split up into two parcels and we have an easement across the way to access our (maybe sinking?) little old boat dock. She was built in 1930 with major renovations done in the mid 90s (not a good time style-wise for anyone). Her list of ailments is long but at her core she is solid and a beautiful old soul. Currently our nights are spent demoing, late afternoons are spent gardening, and daytime is for somehow squeezing in everything else. It’s from @ashleyhomestore and I love it! I believe it was around $800 for the couch and an additional cost for the ottoman. It’s the perfect fit for this small space and fits in like a puzzle piece! It’s super comfy too. Mr. Z picked the couch and TV for this room and I did all other decorating 😁. This view stopped me in my tracks this morning on my walk back from the mailbox. . I still remeber the days I prayed for the things I have now. . Our farmhouse journey was a long one, 6 years to be exact. There were so many viewings, several homes lost, and challenges with purchasing up to the very last one. But here she is, our forever farmhouse. I used to hate it when my dad would tell me theres a better one out there everytime we lost a house, but man was he right. . I started this cash out refi process months ago but it’s finally done! I bought my house 3 years ago with my sister. Over the years I spent around $54k fixing it up to make it the functional cutie it is today. I did a cash out refi to do 3 things: get a better interest rate, pull big $$ out of my house and to further invest this cash in 3 different ways. I was able to pull out $84,000 from my house and my mortgage payment only went up $139. My payment with tax included is still under $2k a month. I’m taking that $$ and will put it in a higher yielding savings account and then will: •Invest in a vacation home with my sis •Invest in the stock market •Buy another property in Austin When I bought my house, I didn’t really consider cash out refinancing as an option...mainly because I didn’t know it existed 😂 the best way I’ve been able to learn and grow is by actually making moves and rolling with the punches. I can research all day long (and I can...I’m cautious by nature) but if I was still in the research phase and waited until I was too comfortable...the same opportunity wouldn’t have been available to me. Slowly getting ready to say goodbye to my little apartment within this house 😭 Two years before I moved here, in one of the toughest weeks of my life, I reached out to @stephbraland needing a place to stay, and she & @tybraland let me crash on their couch for a few nights and take a breath while I figured out what to do next. They were two of the many people to make space in their lives for me to heal and regroup and sprout the tender shoots of a new life. So when I was looking online last year and a familiar big green house came up, I looked at the apartment pictures and realized it was that exact same apartment, and it quickly became mine. Living here has represented and marked so much for me, but it’s also just been a truly beautiful little space with light and leaves right outside and room for at least 13 plants. And spiders. A little over a year ago our home was struck by lightning. In the blink of eye everything changed. It was the most challenging thing weve ever faced as a family. We were displaced for an entire year but today we move back into our completely rebuilt home. The funny thing is losing our home and possessions was probably the biggest blessing. It forced us to refocus and cherish the things that were most important. We learned to live differently and move with greater purpose. Also it helped us realize the great support system that we have in family, friends and neighbors. Special thanks to our SC and NY family that really came through for us and to our friends (extended family) and neighbors that really held us down in every way possible. Im also very proud of my wife that decided to take on the difficult task of being the main liaison between the contractor, insurance, and mortgage companies (i mean she rocked it out!). The lessons we learned through this journey will always be with us. So today Im just grateful for what God has placed in our lives and heart. Its moving day for the Gerber house!!! 13 years of marriage today. From two broke kids [literally 19 years old] living the military life states away from family and enduring everything from deployments to miscarriages to infertility & everything else thrown at us to two mildly older kids who now have a kid of their own & watching our dreams come true right in front of our eyes. Life has not been easy for us, nothing has been handed to us, we have worked very hard, chased dreams, taken massive leaps of faith, & prayed through blood, sweat, & tears to be where we are today. In the beginning, I never intended the project [Mobile Homestead] to have any positive effect. Turning my childhood home into an art gallery/community center was simply a sign for social concern, performed in bad faith. The project, in its initial conception, expressed my true feelings about the milieu in which I was raised, and my belief that one always has to hide one’s true desires and beliefs behind a facade of socially acceptable lies. But, perhaps, the failure of the Mobile Homestead project now, after being filtered through the institutions of the art world and community services, is successful as a model of my own belief that public art is always doomed to failure because of its basic passive/aggressive nature. I think the first question I get asked from everyone who meets @winterthefarmdog is “what type of dog is she?”, followed by “wow she is big!”. Most in the #homestead and #farm community know her breed immediately, but most folks have never heard of them! And are surprised that she is actually very small for the breed! Lol. She is a “Great Pyrenees” and is a working dog known as a “livestock guardian dog, or LGD”. They range from 85lbs-150lbs on average and originate from the mountainous farmlands between France & Spain. Winnie weighs maybe 80lbs but still has some growing to do. The breeds job is to protect their herd. And she does her job very well! But her breed is also very gentle with kids and as you have seen with the goat kids too! She lets them jump all over her with no care in the world. But the second she sees an animal in her yard that doesn’t belong, her protection instincts immediately kick in and she chases or attacks the predator away. It’s amazing to watch! The breed also has a double rear dew claw said to have been to help them climb the mountains they originate from. Just thought I would share some fun facts about her breed today since we get asked it so often! Welcome Home // today @russmiester26 + I made a huge leap into our future + bought a home. A little fixer upper with the yard of my dreams. Although this step was unexpected life seems to be unfolding as it should. I’ve always known that the world works in mysterious ways so I want to share a few that lead us here •• our realtor was one of Russell’s first friends in Georgia. Scott is the best (friend + realtor)! He answered all our annoying first homeowner questions + worked with us for well over a year to decide on what fit our vision. We can’t wait for cookouts & ATL UTD games this year •• the house happens to be one I drive by on my way to @chandlerburnell , howdy new neighbor. the yard scattered with tall trees + room for activities reminded me of my childhood home, such nostalgia. I cannot wait to fill it with gardens + chickens, maybe even a small half pipe for Russ •• the day the house went on the market my mom called me + we hopped in the car to check it out. While exploring the property I noticed a photo on the wall with a familiar face. I got out my phone + texted my old college roommate @chanquick. This just so happens to be her fiancés home, who I went to high school with! •• these are just a few things that made me say “trust where life is taking you”. I shared this briefly a couple weeks ago in stories but realized over the last few weeks some people missed it and had no idea! So I thought I’d share here on my feed so it doesn’t get missed and to clue everyone in! We are so excited for this new life changing journey and cannot wait to build a new life out in the Midwest.... I’m already dreaming of a big garden, lots of animals, and my new root cellar full of my own canned foods!
