Concrete tank defences in the forests near Lossiemouth, Moray. During World War 2, the construction of a line of defences along the Moray coastline aimed to slow down a possible German invasion. Today in Lossie, you can explore the remains of these defences. In 1940, Britain was under threat of German invasion. As a result, a plan was put into action to defend any coastline where the enemy could easily land. The Moray coastal defences ran between Cullen Bay and Findhorn Bay, through todays Lossie and Roseisle Forests. Within the forest at Lossie, theres evidence of the variety of defences constructed. Firstly, there are the concrete foundations of a military camp. This is where the soldiers who constructed and manned the defences lived.Concrete anti-tank blocks ran the full length of the defences. They are no longer complete but long sections of the line are still visible on the edge of the forest. Pillboxes were another part of the defences. Two alternating designs, square and hexagonal shaped, zigzagged a line along the coastline. Over twenty of these still remain at Lossie. On the edge of the forest, you will discover the ruins of a Coastal Battery, consisting of a number of structures. Maryam Mirzakhani is featured in two recent publications: The Women of Science Tarot (a collaboration with @massivesci), and as the guide in Mage Merlins Unsolved Mathematical Mysteries by Satyan Devadoss and Matthew Harvey. Mirzakhani received the Fields Medal, a prestigious mathematics award, in 2014. She became the first woman and the first Iranian to receive this prize. Boğazkale is the Turkish name for Hattusa, the most important Hittite site in Turkey. It was a religious, cultural and administrative centre and its cuneiform tablets of clay and bronze have proved an invaluable source of information about the people. Occupied since the 6th millennium BC, it became the capital of the Hatti in about 1600 BC and lasted around 400 years until overcome by the Phrygians. It was called the City of the Temples because of its 70 religious houses, the largest being the 1400BC Great Temple dedicated to the Storm God Teshub. Rivers to the west and east provide natural defensive escarpments, and the 7km city wall on the south side is pierced by the King’s Gate, Sphynx Gate and the dramatic Lion’s Gate. A shrine depicting 12 gods of the Underworld, from 1250-20BC, can be seen in John Henry Haynes: A Photographer and Archaeologist in the Ottoman Empire 1881–1900 Getting There: Boğazkale is 200km from Ankara. Coronation Carpet,1520-1530, LACMA For my first post I decided to go back to the summer of 2009 when I first visited the Coronation carpet @lacma permanent collection. The rug is massive measuring at approx. 23 x 12 feet. Seeing something of this scale up close was shocking as the images of animals and flowers became unrecognizable. The knots looked more like pixels and I saw the rug as a painterly object. I went home that night, turned on the news which was reporting the green movement protests in Iran and I started my first carpet painting. The culture that we call Fremont flourished in this part of the Southwest between 2,000 and 700 years ago. They left fabulous artwork on the landscape. Ive seen historic photographs of this particular panel where the white area to the left has well-defined paintings on it. My guess is that theyve fallen victim to natural weathering. Images painted on the landscape eventually fade.
