Words by @sharkallies While we were diving deeper into research for the #SharkFree Products campaign over the last couple of months, we found out that squalene is used in some vaccines. Most of the vaccines containing squalene use the shark-derived version, even though non-animal derived squalene is available and just as effective. Since then, we have been stalking vaccine development like a Great White, and researching it in the background. With a handful of vaccines currently leading the race, it is time to share our findings. As it stands, there are 34 candidate vaccines in clinical evaluation and 142 vaccines in preclinical evaluation, according to the WHO. Of these vaccines, 17 use adjuvants, and 5 of those adjuvants are shark-squalene based. This is a concern because a COVID-19 vaccine requires billions of doses, which could mean immense additional pressure on shark populations. ⠀ ⠀ Now that we’ve dropped the bomb, what are we doing about this? We have contacted these companies for answers and are working to craft a peer-reviewed research paper with all of our findings. All that is left to do is ask for the listed vaccine companies to NOT halt production, but to start testing sustainable non-animal-derived squalene, replacing and phasing out the use of shark squalene. What we are asking is: 1. sustainably sourced squalene be used in all non-critical applications, 2. all future testing of adjuvanted vaccines should give non-animal derived sources equal consideration, and 3. that the companies on the forefront of COVID-19 vaccine development start testing non-animal derived squalene to eventually replace it.
