RAT POISON & THE ENVIRONMENT: This male Bobcat was treated by Wildlife Care of Southern California @wildlifecareofsocal before he died and weighed in at 8 lbs where he should have weighed at least 20lbs - he was extremely dehydrated and anemic, he didnt have a chance. It has been proven by the National Park Service that big cats are predisposed to mange (through a compromised immune system), by ingesting poisoned rodents. The poison is stored in the liver further compromising the body; once the mites take hold and multiply in this weakened state, the bobcats immune system cannot fight the shear numbers of mites as they literally suck the life out of him. Rodenticides dont just kill rodents — they also kill the animals that prey on rats and mice, including imperiled species like spotted owls, San Joaquin kit foxes and mountain lions. Recently several of Southern Californias big cats, including this Bobcat, have been found dead with multiple super-toxic rat poisons in their bloodstreams. The California Ecosystems Protection Act (A.B. 1788) would greatly restrict second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides — the most toxic class of rat poisons — throughout the state. Theres a wide range of safer alternatives on the market today that dont pose such dangers and will have a better chance of success if the bill becomes law. Lets get this lifesaving bill over the finish line. Urge Gov. Yesterday, PETA, @wildanimalsanctuary, and @turpentinecreek wildlife refuge rescued 22 lions, tigers, and lion/tiger hybrids from Wildlife in Need under court order after we successfully sued notorious owner and operator Tim Stark for egregious violations of the Endangered Species Act. Tim Stark’s exhibitors license has been revoked and a warrant is out for his arrest after he hid animals who were being removed by authorities earlier this week. US Marshals ordered Stark to remain at least 2 miles away from the property during yesterday’s rescue after he made violent threats against PETA staff. This poor raccoon had a double-layer plastic lid from a frozen dessert stuck around her neck. The caring people who found her used a live-trap to safely capture and transport her to our wildlife hospital where we promptly were able to cut the plastic and remove it. She had some fur worn in that area, but miraculously no lacerations or cuts to her skin, so she was able to be returned home right away! Endemic deer mice are a main staple of the endemic island fox on the Channel Islands NP, yet I had never seen an island fox with a mouse. That was until last Saturday, when this super playful pup nabbed a mouse right in front of me at Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. A photographer has captured high-quality images of a rare black leopard at a wilderness camp in Africa. Wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas wrote in a blog post published Wednesday that he has been fascinated by stories of black panthers and their elusive nature since childhood. He began conceptualizing his dream of capturing an image of the large, hidden cats after noticing photos of them emerging out of the Kabini Forest in Karnataka, India, a couple of years ago, he said. After the experience, Burrard-Lucas learned through friends about a black leopard living at the Laikipia Wilderness Camp in Kenya, and he immediately set out to find it. Dogs of Chernobyl FAQ: Why do you put the food on the ground and not in bowls? If you look closely, you will see that the food is spread out in a line, instead of being put into a bowl or a pile. Spreading the food out gives all the dogs in a group access to the food at the same time, which avoids fights breaking out among dogs that are afraid they will not get any food. Another interesting fact that informs how we administer our Feeding Program: there are groups of dogs that hold and defend territories, so we always make sure that we feed the dogs in the middle of their territory where they feel safe. While the territory boundaries are invisible to us, the dogs know exactly where they are and will not cross the boundary. We make sure to feed the dogs in all territories. Our Feeding Program in the #chernobylexclusionzone will continue through the winter to make sure that the dogs continue to stay healthy and safe. This way, they are less likely to venture into the woods in search of food and interact with wolves, which prey on the stray dogs. Feeding them within their established territories helps to keep them safe from predation and starvation, and helps them to fight off the cold. Sloth bears are important seed dispersers for several tree and plant species. They scatter the seeds of the fruits they eat far and wide, helping floral species to regenerate. However, they can also disperse seeds without consuming them. We started noticing in our camera-trap images that tens of seeds would be stuck on the shaggy coats of these bears and their cubs! - A lot of people dont know this but feral pigs can grow extremely large. When they are at this size they are very dangerous, they have been known to eat entire sheep if they get onto someones property and the meat is no good from these pigs. Pigs are also very aggressive when hungry. So watch out!

We have some sad news to report. 😔 We’ve learned that an adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons (or anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as ARs). Link to press release in bio. . Both deaths occurred in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains north of the Santa Monica Mountains this year. We recently received the necropsy reports. . This marks just the second time in our 24-year study that a bobcat, in this case B-372, has been determined to have died directly from the effects of these poisons, and the first time in 23 years. P-76, a subadult male captured in Northridge late last year and jointly studied by NPS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), died of anticoagulant toxicosis in the Santa Susana Mountains. . “We basically never see this in bobcats, so this is an important finding” said Joanne Moriarty, a biologist who has worked on bobcat research for more than 15 years. According to Moriarty, an examination performed during her capture in January determined that she was in good health, and that she had given birth in the past. . Researchers have seen coagulopathy (uncontrolled bleeding) leading to death in coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions in the study area, but typically not bobcats. . P-76 is the sixth collared mountain lion to die of coagulopathy and the third in the last two years. He was captured and collared by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers in November 2019 in an urban neighborhood in Northridge, just outside of Los Angeles. . In the case of P-76, his collar went on “mortality mode” the night of January 29, 2020. His carcass was recovered the following morning by NPS and CDFW biologists in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Highway 118. Last month we GPS-collared two subadult cougars (C21 & C22) that weve been monitoring with their mother (C5) since last January. When we initially collared the mother our houndsman said she had 3 kittens but subsequent camera footage that we got only ever showed two at a time. Now 9 months later we can officially show that yes, indeed she has had 3 kittens all along because this family clearly takes turns at a kill and one very obviously is not collared! He seems like a healthy male, and now that these cats have left their mother to make their own kills we may only occasionally see him with his mother. . . . The Olympic Cougar Project may be a misleading name, as we are also collecting data on bobcats for Pantheras small cat program, in conjunction with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. Here, one of our remote cameras captured an image of a bobcat and their prize, a mountain beaver. Mountain beavers, also known as aplodontia, boomers or sewellel are endemic rodents to the coastal forests of the north western United States and British Columbia. Mountain beavers were named by the colonist miners of the Seirra Nevadas for the way they trim branches and saplings in the same fashion as their namesake, the american beaver. (Maser, Chris.
