Here are a series of photos from Mike Bloomfields August 1972 appearance at Tulagi in Boulder, CO. They were taken by photographer William Ludlow, and the large image is one William graciously allowed me to reproduce in Guitar King: Michael Bloomfields Life in the Blues. It was Bloomfields first time playing the venue, and in his Friends quartet along with Mark Naftalin was a new member, drummer George Rains. George had previously played with Mark in Tracy Nelsons band Mother Earth and with Doug Sahm in the Sir Douglas Quintet, and he would become MBs go-to drummer for the next few years. With the addition of bassist and vocalist Roger Jellyroll Troy, the quartet would become one of Bloomfields best Friends groups in the 1970s. In October of 2015 we sat in a hotel room and decided to really do this again. No reunion, just tour, write a record while on tour, record it, and tour again. Three years and a month later here we are. We finished multiple world tours and got to release our full length Interalia and our EP Diamanté in the process. Last night we played our last show on this cycle in Porto Alegre, Brazil. To say we are emotional, humbled and proud would be an understatement. With the help of @rawpowermanagement , @riserecords , our great agents at WME and CAA, and all our day to day hard work of keeping this unit running, we got here with a smile on our face and a few tears in our eyes. We want to thank all the crew, fans, promoters, and anyone else that got it going everyday on tour. We are looking forward to taking a break and taking in all that we had the privilege to do. Carnival Bizarre, the third studio album from Cathedral was released 25 years ago today. That’s a quarter of a century ago, which seems unreal. It was a new era for the band, new lineup etc. Many thought the odds were against us after the collapse of our major deal in the US with Columbia. Well, we didn’t form the band with the notion that we would one day be on a major label (the thought didn’t even enter our heads), so we were determined that it would not be the end of us. Most of the material was written and rehearsed in Chicago with myself, Gaz, Scott Carlson and Dave Hornyak, during the autumn/winter of 1994. I remember sleeping alone in the rehearsal space with the accompanying sounds of rats scuttling past me and guns shooting through the night (it was a very rough neighbourhood). When we lost the deal, it sadly meant we had to lose Scott and Dave, though we did manage to do a few UK dates with this lineup, which were filled with hilarious moments. During the first part of 95 we set about finding a new lineup. It seemed to take forever and was indeed quite daunting but we eventually found the legendary Leo Smee and Brian Dixon and embarked on a cutthroat European tour literally days after the auditions. We then spent 10 days in a Cottage in Devon, relearning and tightening up the new songs, before going to Parkgate studios with Kit Woolven, where the recording commenced. When it was finished we were all very pleased with how it turned out; it had a raw live energy and wasn’t over produced. To top it off, the one and only Tony Iommi agreed to guest on the album, after we had toured Europe with Sabbath the previous year. Three years ago - 18th of June 2017 - 24 hours of Le Mans! I had the honour to be part of an incredible story! After an unplanned repair during the night we came out of the pits with the #porsche919hybrid Car #2 - the car was on the last place! About 18 hours later @timo_bernhard_official did the final overtake to take the lead and we managed to keep it...the rest is history! Concierto inolvidable, la sala parecía una cancha de fútbol, imposible explicar con palabras. The first single of the new Carnation album is out! Sepulcher of Alteration came to life after a 3 day writer’s block at our writing/preproduction session at GAM studio. One night, after a beer or two, Jonathan and Vincent just started jamming and two of the best riffs in Carnation history were born. Production wise, this entire album is my magnum opus. We went with a very organic, visceral sound. Every instrument has room tracks (even the bass and vocals!), we made sure to make as little edits as possible and work hard to get good takes instead. We rehearsed these songs for almost two years and made two pre-productions before doing the actual recordings. Massive thanks to all of you for the patience and loyalty, thanks to Hertz Studio for the drum recordings (and wisdom), thanks to Bob for driving us there, thanks to Jens Bogren and Tony Lindgren for the mastering, thanks to Jens De Vos for making yet another amazing video, thanks to Sarina for goring up Simon and thanks to the rest of Carnation for trusting me enough to handle the production of this beast. Today is the 25th anniversary of @rancid “And Out Come The Wolves”. What a brilliant record beginning to end! Truly a punk rock classic. I was in high school when this album came out and it changed the lives of so many of my friends & I. This band, this album... legendary!!! Brett Reed & @mattfreeman were so locked in and sounded better than ever! Tim & @larsfrederiksen riffs, leads and solos were next level and extra special on this record. The vocals performances, lyrics are some of their best! What was already such a great band seemingly got even better. This album will live on forever as an important one in music history. - I would’ve never imagined I’d one day become a member of this band. Having been in Rancid for 14yrs now, the same amount of time Brett was in the band... blows my mind. As a fan, to me Brett Reed will always be the drummer of Rancid. He’s still a good friend of mine and I will always love & respect what he did in this band and the influence it’s had on me. I always want to do my part to keep the spirit, integrity, passion and power alive in this band that I loved so much as a fan. I have always, will always give 100% in every performance. I’m beyond grateful for these last 14yrs and the experiences I’ve had. Sincerest thank you to Lars, Tim, Matt, Brett, Jerry, Gurewitz and everyone else that had a part in making this record. The albums that shaped Mizmor - pt. II Wolves in the Throne Room - “Two Hunters” (2007) This album was such a huge inspiration to me leading up to the first Mizmor album (2012). It was definitely my personal gateway into black metal and remains one of my favorite’s of all time. Although other black metal albums would enter my sphere of influence over the coming years, “Two Hunters” might be solely responsible for the BM component heard on Mizmor S/T, which is saying a lot for this equal-parts doom/black metal fusion album. What grabbed my attention right away was how melodic and beautiful it was, without going so far in that direction as to forsake the darkness. I was drawn in by the slow warmth of “Dea Artio” only to fall in love with the blistering heartbreak of “Vastness and Sorrow,” still one of the most affective melodies in the genre to my ear. I had heard some songs from classic Norwegian black metal bands in passing over the years prior to discovering this album, but, although brutal, none of it had pulled my heartstrings, so to speak. I connected with this album so strongly as I was falling away from my faith in God because it filled me with a sense of yearning/longing. The chords and melodies, the tempos and tremolo picking, it all sounded so epic and grandiose, but also so personal and emotional. These were the same feelings I got when looking at the Alps or meditating on (or mourning) the idea God, and all in a very melancholic way. This album showed me that black metal doesn’t have to be one-dimensional and started me down the road to appreciating more and more of it. WIITR took the prettiness of post-rock guitar work and coated it in the frost bite of BM in an ingenious way. This sound has evolved since and many bands have gone on to take this further into the post-rock direction, which compromises that essential balance of consonance/dissonance that makes dark music moving, for me anyway. Without this album, Mizmor may well have just been a doom band. It connected me to the powerful emotional tool that is black metal (the genre’s anti-Christian ideologies an important background facet for me also). #wolvesinthethroneroom - @whollydoomedblackmetal on Instagram
