Guns drawn at dawn, a verbal shoot out between two of the biggest gobs around at the time, Wayne & his good friend, Miles Hunt of The Wonder Stuff. As the system is set up right now, cops are being asked to juggle too many tasks. We are asking cops to be mental health professionals, traffic safety enforcers, experts when it comes to sexual assaults, interpersonal communication specialists, experts when it comes to solving our homelessness crisis, experts in de-escalation… the list goes on and on. So what does Defunding the Police actually mean? It means a thoughtful reallocation of police funds to improve our social systems. This would make way for things like the decriminalization of mental health issues (people are treated/healed as opposed to being put in jail), professional de-escalation specialists, social systems (like affordable housing, counseling, healthcare) that would make for a safer and healthier community. WHY ISN’T THE GOAL TO PREVENT CRIME BEFORE IT HAPPENS BY ELIMINATING THE ISSUES THAT TYPICALLY LEAD TO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY? WHY IS OUR GOAL TO CONTROL CRIMINALS AND FILL QUOTAS? The connection between an offense-based police system and police brutality is undeniable. As white Americans, we have been tuning out the voice of the BIPOC communities who have been saying this for years. We have decided to care now that we see police brutality in our own families. We need to recognize that we are joining the movement late and fight even harder for the benefit of out country while realizing that we have also enabled the problem. We are not experts in this. In a landmark decision, the Senate has approved the Fast Pace programme for B.Tech and Integrated M.Sc students. In the final semester, students can now go for long Internship programs, or engage in Entrepreneurship endeavours, or do research within the Institute itself. Departments have been instructed to readjust the courses such that there are no laboratory courses in the final semester. Students from 3rd semester onwards will be allowed to take one extra theory course in each semester in addition to the regular academic load provided he/ she has a CGPA greater than or equal to 8. The required courses can either be completed through the above mechanism or by doing an equivalent course in SWAYAM. The internship/ entrepreneurship work/ research work done in the final semester shall be allowed in place of Research Project-I and Research Project-II of total 8 credits. On September 14th, a young woman in Hathras, U.P., belonging to the Dalit Valmiki caste was allegedly raped by four men belonging to an upper Thakur caste. The victim succumbed to her injuries, and on September 29th, the U.P. police cremated her body without her family’s consent after barricading the family inside their home. Amid the outpouring of outrage on social media, the victim’s gender takes the spotlight. However, the victim’s Dalit identity is either invisible in people’s expressions of anger and frustration, or deemed by some to be a distraction from the ‘real’ issue of a woman’s rape. Yet, the victim’s Dalit caste identity is extremely important, considering rape and sexual assault are the most common forms of violence utilized against marginalized castes, according to a National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, and because there has been a 25% increase in crimes against Dalits over the past decade. The victim’s caste identity matters because it shines a spotlight upon India’s uncomfortable position as a casteist state and society that repeatedly terrorizes individuals deemed lower caste with violence, rape, and murder, while its justice system often looks the other way. Ignoring the Hathras victim’s Dalit identity is both erasing one of the most plausible potential motives for the crime and turning a blind eye to the impenetrable hold caste-centric patriarchy exerts over Indian society. Today, on September 21st, we remember one of the darkest eras of Philippine history however, it is also the era of resistance against fascism and growing movement against imperialism as repression breeds resistance. 48 years ago today, Ferdinand Marcos declared Proclamation No. 1081 placing the entire Philippines under Martial law. The Marcos regime shutdown Congress, major media outlets, arrested and tortured anyone that opposed the regime. Filipino youth and students bore the brunt as campuses became the primary targets of the proclamation--student councils were outlawed; student papers were censored or harassed; military agents routinely monitored campuses. It was the growing youth and student movement and their unwearying fight for social change that led to Marcos declaring martial law. What started as a fight for education and student freedom, grew into a comprehensive mass movement that fought for the rights and welfare of all sectors of Philippine society, and birthed the revolutionary mass organizations Kabataang Makabayan and MAKIBAKA (Malayang Kilusan ng Bagong Kababaihan). They were among the most militant groups to denounce the corruption and negligence of the puppet-president Ferdinand Marcos. They raised the issue that the Philippines is plagued by the outside interference of former colonial powers like the United States. They raised the issue that the peasant and working class were used and abused for a failing economy. they raised the fact that Marcos did not know how to govern such a situation. And they raised that the only way for the Filipino people to survive was to unite under the banner for a national democratic revolution. Now, almost fifty years since proclamation 1081, because of the brutality of martial law, the billions of pesos stolen from the Filipino people by the Marcoses, and the slew of ugly successors to the presidency, the Philippines continue to face the same injustices! NINE ACTIONs you can take! What we can do: 1. Use positive parenting techniques and be a good example for the child 2. Adults should fulfill their responsibilities to their children responsibly, and parents, teachers, and other professionals work closely and improve communication between them. 3. Be a responsible and participatory citizen who must inform authorities if one sees all kinds of violence and illegal acts toward children. Do not depend on others to inform. 4. Be vigilant with relatives, friends, and neighbors in your and their residential areas, to improve neighborly relations, and to fulfill our legal obligations. 5. Initiate close cooperation between civil society organizations, the government, the private sector and citizens working in the field of human rights, initiate and implement multi-stakeholder activities and projects for the public, and improve all-round cooperation. 6. To provide all possible support to NGOs, the public and the government working in the field of child protection and open opportunities for citizens and businesses to participate and improve cooperation. 7. When driving, always respect the child at the crossroads, do not sound the alarm and do not talk on the phone, yield to pedestrians, especially children.
