“Maremma Dee-Light😍” Meet Lucca (Italian for “light”), he’s our Italian goat guard dog, going on 3 years old, about 120 pounds - he’s built like a wolf (look at those mits!), he’s only friendly with a few who know him, since he lives with the herd - it’s best to stay away when he’s around. He has a very large head, thick mane, and a set of jaws. Another Maremma down our road took out a young cougar - probably because the cougar didn’t see the Maremma coming out of the herd until it was too late - and once those jaws got on the cougar, there was no return. Lucca is fearless, and we have no issues with coyotes, being built like a wolf, long and lanky, he has a kind of lope about him that lets him cover a lot of ground easily. In the winter months when the grass quits growing the cattle’s diet consists mainly of hay and a lot of it! My Dad and I put up around 1,000 bales of hay each summer. This means a lot of hours on the tractor, but it is one of my favorite things to do. The hay has to be cut, cured, raked, baled and hauled in. To a farmer, there’s nothing quite like a freshly tilled field. However, over time we will amend our soil with enough compost and bio mass that we actually won’t need to till. We will be able to aerate the soil with our broadfork, add our amendments, then get to planting! In the meantime, we are relying on machines to help break up the dry, clay boulders in order to plant. You guys would not believe all the flack I got (and still get) for deciding to raise sheep. And not just that - raising a unique, primitive breed of sheep. (And Justin got a lot of: “Is your girlfriend out of her mind?”😂) • We live in cattle country and we love our cows - but we love our sheeple too. The reason I started shipping lamb is because we had such a gourmet product and didn’t think we would be able to convince our community to give it a try. Well, I’m starting to see that change. • Icelandic sheep are smart, hardy, beautiful, maternal, and have such strong personalities. The meat is the best there is, plus they can also be milked for sheep’s milk. The breed is getting popular and the demand is going up all the time. I’m prouder than ever to have a growing herd and feel so lucky to have them. Started with 4 two and a half years ago. Meet Dr.Joseph Heckman. A Rutgers University professor in Organic Agriculture and Soil Health and Owner/Farmer of Neshanic Pastures in Hillsborough, NJ. Located right alongside the Sourland Mountain Preservation. He is a new farmer on our team who is raising animals and vegetables EXCLUSIVELY for our buyers, supporters, family, and friends. He experiments with cover crops and different natural fertilizers like whey from milk & dried blood collected at slaughter to see how his soils and plants respond. He grows almost all of his own feed for his animals which is a small collection of 10 Jersey Cows, 30 hens, as well as only a few hogs and horses on close to 100 acres of pastures. Just two kids who didn’t grow up on a dairy but got there as quick as they possibly could 🖤⁣ ⁣ Demi is one of the calves Ed proposed with. ⁣ She is the first calf we own together that turned heads at a show. ⁣ She stole the show in our engagement photos.⁣ And then again in our wedding pictures. ⁣ And today she reminded us why we do what we do.... she came to work, but she had so much fun doing it 👏🏼⁣ ⁣ Maybe it was just a little county fair but this lady threw her head up and showed the heck out of herself... and worked herself all the way up to Junior Champion. ⁣ ⁣ We are so incredibly thankful to our team that helped us get everything to the ring and to Star Rock for letting us play show dogs with their heifers (who also brought their A game 🙌🏻). ⁣ ⁣ Here’s to hoping next year allows for a couple more shows so we can take these pretty girls a little bit further away from home. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼⁣ ⁣ - @jennarenee.facer on Instagram

It’s a solemn day at #StillwaterRanch as Prince Rupert the ram passed away. 🥺 He took his final rest # right next to the still water of the lake under a 100 year old apple tree. I’m very sad. Bird world 🐦 was so much better than I expected!! ⁣ ⁣ To tell you the truth I thought birdworld would just be a little place where they will have a few animals and a small farm. But when I tell you it’s like a beautiful hidden world behind those gates, I mean it!!⁣ ⁣ It’s actually amazing and I think I had more fun than the kids did! ⁣ ⁣ We went a few days ago and it was so nice to do something different compared to just going out for food or the park. It was so peaceful and relaxing. It allowed us to switch off from the rest of the world and enjoy taking in the nature and animals🦩 . ⁣ ⁣ The place has a little café, ice cream 🍦 shop and a place to sit and look at everything that’s going on around you. ⁣ ⁣ Oh and it’s even got this inclosure where you can walk through and they have budgies flying around! (not gonna lie I was hesitant to go in there but then Jaweria and Melissa looked at me like, are you serious mate?) ⁣ ⁣ I 💯% recommend this place to anyone, even if you haven’t got kids it’s a great place to visit! 2020 malt barley harvest wrapped up a few days ago. Still wheat and other grains to come off but all the malt barley is safely in storage with good quality. Farming is always an exercise in optimism. The hot, dry summer meant yield per acre was down but we got a high bushel weight. Bushel weight is how heavy a given volume of grain is. A higher weight means more larger individual grains which gives the right proportion of husk to starch for malting and ultimately brewing. We are spending this Sunday piddling around the farm. We pulled up the “teenager chickens” fence down we can mow it all down before putting up a permanent fence. Those electric netting fences are basically worthless so they will be getting some extra free range time before the new fence goes up. . Today wasn’t the extremely rainy day we expected...nevertheless yesterday we ran our fancy new finger weeder in the brassica field, got our late round of winter squash cultivated, seeded our last field carrots for the year, and hilled up the final Fall beds ready for planting soon. After an emotionally straining year (late freeze, record spring rain, amazing high demand!, COVID!), we’ve reached the time of the season when we farmers scratch our heads and try to remember why we do this work. Out late this evening getting some more grass hay cut down. We will bale this and use it to feed our beeves in the winter when there’s snow or frozen ground and they can’t graze. Grass fed all year long! . This is our go-time! We’re putting up hay/grass, combining, spreading chicken manure from our winter laying hen house, planting a new batch of cover crop behind the combine with our no-till drill, and trying to keep all these animals comfortable in this crazy heat wave! . Let me take you back to 2013 for just a minute. It was a warm afternoon in May when I got called in to talk to my boss. I worked for a small storm water management company and we frequently had one-on-one meetings with the boss, so his request didn’t send up any red flags. As I walked down the stairs to his office my mind was already on the next task- heading home to pack for my favorite trip of the year (helping out on the family ranch in Southern Utah). I casually sat down on one of the chairs in his office and waited for him to speak. We sat in silence for just a moment as I began to sense the gravity of what was coming. “Kaleb, I’ve got some bad news. Our salesman has been struggling to bring in enough business to keep this division going. Unless he can really turn things around in the next couple weeks we’re going to have to lay everyone off.” I tried to process the news. But this was a huge blow. I’d been hired right out of college and only a year later I was already making more than many in my field. The odds of finding a job that paid even close to as much as I’d been making were slim. I left for the weekend completely devastated. Soon after returning from a brief and stressful trip to the ranch (*pictured) I was officially laid off. I might not have believed it at the time, but this changed the trajectory of my entire life in a GOOD way! It gave me a blank slate and acted as a springboard into a new career. And I love my job now! It’s more fulfilling, enjoyable and lucrative than my old job. So to the MILLIONS of people that just lost their job, I’m rooting for you! I don’t know what your story will be, but I DO know that there are valuable opportunities and experiences ahead of you. And a million dollar rain rolled through this afternoon. Always nice to catch a shower right after seeding. A quarter inch will cover most of your fuck ups. Its still not all beer and skittles, but its a far lot better than it has been. I wont lie to you, its been a little tough to smile the last year or so. The weather was absolute shit, so were the markets. I think theres some light at the end of this tunnel. Im always reminded of Dori, off Finding Nemo... just keep swimming.
