Reggie update! (Isn’t it so sweet that Gordito came to sit next to him?!) Thank you for all your support! We took him to UC Davis last night so they could figure out what’s going on with him. The tests they ran did not indicate any urinary issues, so they think he might have eaten something that caused him some toxicity. (Apparently he snuck out of an open gate on Monday and must have nibbled on chicken feed.) This one mishap could have ruined his rumen, so they are going to replace his rumen 😯 Luckily, he’s stable and doing much better today! Yesterday he wouldn’t eat or go to the bathroom, let alone move around. Today, the doctors report that he’s eating and doing really well — well enough to get this operation! We don’t know how long he’ll be at the hospital...but we miss him so much already! Thanks for your continued support; all forms of it help us to keep our babies well taken care of, whether energetically, monetarily, or otherwise. - @ranchocompasion on Instagram

- One of my favorite things about gardening, I leave it all on the mulch!
This looks like a messy barn (because it is) but you’ll notice there are lights in it! I completed a 4-year goal today and finished wiring the barn for power. Our neighbor Jason helped with the panel install early this spring and I’ve been plotting my attack all summer. This weekend Bubba was gone and so were the kids (thanks Mom!) and I worked my tail off pulling wire, installing fixtures, running conduit. This afternoon Jason came back and helped me with the final switching and checks before we turned the breakers on. And it all works! I’ve never wired something this complex before so it is a giant sense of accomplishment and I’m so excited to finally unplug those massive extension cords from the end of the shop that have been precariously powering our barn for the last 4 years. With our final pick of harvest happening this evening, we’re counting our many blessings. Among them, the fruit we’ve brought in not only looks beautiful, but the flavor and acidity balance are stunning. We’re beyond grateful to the harvest crew and our entire Hanzell team, who after tonight, will have picked and processed 44 acres of vines in what has to be record time. There has always been so much love and passion in the Hanzell wines, but this year, given all the challenges and obstacles, it seems we’ve captured a little extra magic. • Harvest aside, we are thankful that despite the wild lightening storms of a few days ago, our town of Sonoma and the hillsides that surround us are not enduring the wildfires burning in other parts of Sonoma County and nearly every county in the Bay Area, including Napa and Lake. We send our most sincere gratitude and thanks to the first responders out there working tirelessly, in unimaginably difficult conditions, to keep our communities safe. In east San Jose, this quiet expanse of crop fields and big blue skies is hidden right under the 280/101 interchange behind Emma Prusch Farm Park. Veggielution is a nonprofit farm and their farm stand is open on Saturdays from 10-2. They have a little free seed library if you want to donate seeds or if you need seeds, a small library, the fresh produce stand, and you can go out and walk around the farm a bit too. For $7, we got a completely full grocery bag of tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, winter squash, cucumber and grapes... and then we walked right over to Emma Prusch Farm Park and fed the entire bag to the chickens there. Best $7 ever spent. Next time might donate to a local CSA. I almost felt bad giving such great food to chickens, but it was the tail end of their open hours, and I LOVE chickens, and my family just cant eat any more veggies with our CSA box every week. @veggielution - @legacy_siliconvalley on Instagram

2020 malt barley harvest wrapped up a few days ago. Still wheat and other grains to come off but all the malt barley is safely in storage with good quality. Farming is always an exercise in optimism. The hot, dry summer meant yield per acre was down but we got a high bushel weight. Bushel weight is how heavy a given volume of grain is. A higher weight means more larger individual grains which gives the right proportion of husk to starch for malting and ultimately brewing. Bird world 🐦 was so much better than I expected!! To tell you the truth I thought birdworld would just be a little place where they will have a few animals and a small farm. But when I tell you it’s like a beautiful hidden world behind those gates, I mean it!! It’s actually amazing and I think I had more fun than the kids did! We went a few days ago and it was so nice to do something different compared to just going out for food or the park. It was so peaceful and relaxing. It allowed us to switch off from the rest of the world and enjoy taking in the nature and animals🦩 . The place has a little café, ice cream 🍦 shop and a place to sit and look at everything that’s going on around you. Oh and it’s even got this inclosure where you can walk through and they have budgies flying around! (not gonna lie I was hesitant to go in there but then Jaweria and Melissa looked at me like, are you serious mate?) I 💯% recommend this place to anyone, even if you haven’t got kids it’s a great place to visit! We have closed early today and might be closed tomorrow as well due to the hazardous air quality. This is the new reality for Californians and its been worsening since the drought began. These are the results we get when we destroy and decimate the environment and do not think collectively in terms of other animals and other people. The last California grizzly bear went extinct in 1924 and our flag is a reminder of how we transitioned the environment. How much more are we going to pillage and destroy until we understand what we are doing? And if most of us understand what it is we are doing and are changing our daily habits then when are those in power going to be held accountable? The way we currently operate as a society is not sustainable. Until then we will continue to live in smoke and never see a blue sky like we did even 20 years ago. Until we all learn collectively that this has to stop and that people in power need to be held accountable when it comes to the environment. Out late this evening getting some more grass hay cut down. We will bale this and use it to feed our beeves in the winter when there’s snow or frozen ground and they can’t graze. Grass fed all year long! . This is our go-time! We’re putting up hay/grass, combining, spreading chicken manure from our winter laying hen house, planting a new batch of cover crop behind the combine with our no-till drill, and trying to keep all these animals comfortable in this crazy heat wave! . If you come visit or grab an order, don’t let the aroma knock you down 🤪🤭...it’s just some good, old fashioned nutrients. But chicken 💩is no joke on the smell!
