This past weekend I had the pleasure of coaching my athletes from @adonisathleticsgranville and more Adonis strongman competitors from each gym through another great competition !! Here is one of my most consistent athletes @ellysmth taking out yet another 1st place win in her third competition and earning herself an invite to NSW strongest competition in a few weeks !! Reposted-Today I fought for my spot to qualify to compete at NSW Strongest. I’m very proud to have hit minimum weights for 4/5 events. Played it safe today with my log press, but walked away with another log PB and qualified to compete at States in October. Making @coach_.mitch proud again with 3 back to back wins, bringing home gold again! 🥇 A huge thanks to my @adonisathleticsgranville fam and @bigbirdstrongwoman who came out to support me today! ❤️ Heres what I hit 80kg stone to shoulder - 4 reps. 160kg axle deadlift - 4 reps. Called it early to save energy for stones. 85kg per hand farmers in 15 seconds. 67.5kg log another PB. 😍 220kg yoke in 23 seconds. The smaller Planche progressions are often overlooked I see people all the time trying to take too big a leap in the complexity of the movement and in a rush instead of laying a solid foundation of strength. In my experience those that Pay attention to the progressions in between progressions often progress the fastest. Here are a couple of progressions often overlooked. 1. Scapular push ups. To be fair I do see a large amount of people working on this but mainly as a warm up. Have you tried to do more than a set of 10? 2. Band assisted scap push up. Add some resistance build some strength aim for 15 reps with a 3 sec pause in the protraction part of the rep 3. Planche slides. Maintain the lean forward. Straight arms no elbow bend and don’t allow the hips to move up and down 4. Planche slide lifting the feet. To begin with aim to pull the feet off for 1-3seconds. Another team entering the IZK space. I actually got to watch these guys play on the weekend and it wasn’t the desired result - so when I was approached by @korey.nix to work with them last night, I knew what they needed and what needed improving. A “team mindset” is what is needed if you are indeed part of a team. When everyone in that team is working for each other and not themselves, Magic happens. This can only be discovered when they are pushed to the limits AS ONE. Only then can we find out what being a teammate is about. Optimism is your biggest weapon. Last night the magic happened in spades. We framed it in easy to understand terms. What the word “team” means and how to truly work for each other and take yourself out of the equation. The energy was electric last night. And the final drill - a ZUU classic “frog to static” #IYKYK was something truly remarkable. Look at the last photo - everyone physically connected (this wasn’t coached), everyone literally supporting each other by holding each other up. Working for the team - not yourself. This is a team. This is the mindset I coach. If I could sum it up in a photo - it’s this. I love this. Three Big Things: Upon returning to the gym, even if its outdoor, I have run into a few challenges in the past week as a Coach and a Leader of Coaches. This morning I woke up and realized that no matter what difficulties I face in this business and industry I have got to remember to do the following: -Be Grateful: I have to remember I have my health (minus a DVT in the left calf), I have a job, and I have support from a wife, family, and friends. There are so many things to bitch and complain about in 2020, but at the end of the day I have got to remember to be grateful for the things I have in life. Good vibes only-- too much hate in this world to be ungrateful for what we have. -Check Your Ego: This comes down to the way I carry myself at work as well as during my own time, especially during workouts. Jumping back into a job and the gym after 6 months is challenging and can break you mentally and physically. Remember to slow down and think things out before doing-- even if that means regressing your movements. -Find Balance: Last week 65 hours of work and barely 49 hours of sleep was not balance. In fact, it was more detrimental to my day to day living than anything. As much as we want to do everything we can in 24 hours, we need to remind ourselves that we are human and to live a healthy life you need to balance things out. Even if that means sacrificing certain activities in your day and week to do so. Also, its ok to turn things off when you go home-- like work and your cell phone. I know my wife would appreciate it more if I can find balance with work and life in these coming days and weeks-- I owe that to her with the amount of times I have driven her crazy during our countys lockdown. Final note: health and fitness is more than repping out on the squat rack or hitting your macros daily. A couple of weeks ago, I set up to post a series of photos about extreme political protest. I felt urged to do so in light of the hunger strikes that had taken hold of Ohio state prisons, California ICE detentions, and quarantined cruise liners. I started with a video of the artist Tania Bruguera performing “Self Sabotage” a performance involving lecture and a game of russian roulette. The video of the artist puttting a gun to her head triggered some and I took the post down to question my own sensitivity and the work’s appropriateness for this time. Now, I am returning to what I intended to post originally in light of the fires burning in Minnesota right now — Pictured are Arnav Gupta, who was seen in flames walking in front of the white house last year, wearing a shirt with bold USA letters. He was sprayed with chemical retardant and taken to the hospital by police, where he died from his wounds. And Thích Quảng Đức, a buddhist monk who in June 1963, self immolated in a busy city intersection of Saigon to protest religious persecution of Buddhists by the Catholic government rulership Of Vietnam at the time. This is the famous photograph, taken by Malcolm Browne, still recognized to this day. — It would be unjust and insensitive to call acts like these “performance art.” A radical withholding of ones own life, the ultimate strike, will always be tragic and will always be triggering. They intend to illuminate wounds felt, but not seen, and meant to wound the observer, so that we feel what they feel. Because of that, they hold a place at the core of the spirit of performance art, and to withhold their representation on this instagram page feels eerily like censorship. We need ways, now more than ever, of processing grief and pain. Sometimes the way is simply to witness. In watching, witnessing, and listening to those that make their pain most apparent for us to see, our cores can be incited and we can be willed to action. Some have already surrendered to this moment that we are all aware is incredibly difficult and insufferable.
