Hello internet, hello my fellow quarantined friends in the universe. I present to you all an album entitled Light Purple - released today on the 32nd anniversary of my birth. It was recorded in my home and also in South Jersey with my sonic and spiritual guru, Jerry Bernhardt. Some of these are songs I’ve sat on for a while, others that I haven’t. Some that I “mixed” for hours, and others that I rushed to finish today because of my universal and neurotic deadline. Some that are practices in musical self-improvisation & reaction and others that are inspired by Weezer and Walt Whitman. Anyways. These are weird times and any of you who know me understand that I never stop moving. I’ve basically been on tour since 2010 and haven’t done much besides that in these past 10 years. Cursive Mindings. 35mm»120mm🎞 Portra 800@400 RedScaled I’ve discovered a new way to cope with ruts. I’ve reminded myself to think I as once did, before the decisions to pursue. If you read these often, you’ll know this already, but allow me to go deeper into my own personal findings with you. This may not be quite as general as some of my other “Creative Philosophies” but in my case, its applies as true as the rest. This one, like the last few posts, is on the topic of thoughts and the process of creating. Since lowering my expectations for myself, I’ve not only created happier, enjoyed my images more, and had an easier time coming up with new concepts to explore, but I’ve also found my mind running much smoother. See, without telling myself “no and building road blocks in my mental alleyways, I’ve freed traffic to flow more fluidly. This is something I have a hard time with normally. As a creator, especially one who enjoys the more experimental, Avant Garde works, I find my biggest challenge in crafting original experiences. I always have ideas and then think “No, thats not really that weird” and I move onto the next, but thats the moment I go wrong. Now that I’ve allowed myself to explore any and all ideas, I’m more comfortable traveling further down paths even if they seem like they’re headed in the wrong direction. I mean, I’m not some master thinker now, or anything close to that, but I can tell that things are moving along better then before. And like all other things, creative thinking is a practiced skill and I’m starting to understand it more and more. I posted a song - on YouTube, But with a download link in the description - that was written & recorded recently during a rainy, stormy day. Different piano tracks recorded with vintage radio mics into my four track / cassette, and mixed live on it along with the room & weather sound, and different artifacts & past recordings on the tape intruding at different times, sort of like memories do into dreams. Nearly everyone I know & see, those I love, and myself, included, all seem to be or are acutely aware of being in a state of perpetual chaos. Something far past dread, discontentment, worry, fear - more like waking to find yourself alone on a raft being thrashed about on an angry ocean, unsure of which or where or how you even arrived there, rather than sitting shipwrecked on an anonymous, unknown island watching a heavy storm - a hurricane even - approach on the distant horizon. Music is too frequently it’s own sort of suffering, but at its absolute best, and it’s rarest, it is it’s own sort of salve, balm. Nepenthe, “drug of forgetting” medicine of sorrow. This is the goal, regardless of the actualization, the execution. This is not some new single, some new album - that will be announced soon, and though it is a different sound & style it has the exact same sort of goal & raison dêtre. I’ve been vegan for sixteen years, I also follow a sustainable, low-waste lifestyle, and lately I’ve been seeing a lot of white vegans complaining about climate change and gatekeeping veganism, making it even more difficult for those who are interested in being vegan to be welcomed into this lifestyle. Your all-or-nothing attitude about being plant-based is damaging. Your inability to understand other people’s financial, physical, and emotional needs is exhausting. You are part of a serious problem: by intentionally pushing your personal choices and lifestyle on Indigenous, Black people, and other people of color your veganism is cultural colonialism. No matter how well intentioned you are, these acts are racist and problematic. Environmental justice is racial justice, for you not to acknowledge capitalism and colonialism within veganism is ignorant and problematic. You are part of a much larger issue, because if you don’t care about the welfare and rights of non-white people and their environments, your veganism is performative. You do not need to be seen as “one of the good white people,” by posting and virtue signaling your “sustainable” vegan lifestyle. Sustainability and veganism have been guarded by whites for decades. Not everybody can afford to eat vegan. Not everybody can afford to buy from sustainable brands. Not everybody can live a zero-waste lifestyle. Stop gatekeeping veganism and sustainability. Acknowledge your privilege. Acknowledge colonialism and capitalism within vegan communities. Most importantly, acknowledge the rampant racism and gatekeeping within your own vegan, sustainable lifestyle. Otro error que se puede cometer en la fotografía analógica es no guardar debidamente los rollos antes o después de ser expuestos. En este caso el rollo se mojó y se almacenó por varios años antes de ser revelado, causando que la película se adhiriera entre ella misma por sus propiedades gelatinosas, generando de esta manera que parte de la gelatina se desprendiera y también se manchara. NEW SINGLE! Santa Cruz has been a mainstay in my set for over 12 years but I have had trouble finding a performance of it that reflects how I sing it these days. In March of 2019 I recorded this version on electric guitar straight to vinyl at Gulch Alley Studios in San Francisco and always loved it. It had been hiding it in my back pocket since then and now I want to put it out in the world. The cover photo is taken on a self timer with my girlfriend Dani while finishing moving her out of her apartment toward the beginning of quarantine, a place we both loved very much. I feel very strongly for people who are alone in this time, and the people who too loved a place and couldnt leave on their own terms. We have been very fortunate. I have a special place in my spirit for the Santa Cruz area and am gutted for everyone affected by the fires down there. I really want to encourage everyone in all corners of the country to vote for people who believe in the reality of climate change and want to do something about it.
