Sorry for the long post. Story time: you can catch me on the season 2 premier of @the_politician on @netflix. This little scene means more to me than other things I’ve done before. You see as a white Latino for the most part I usually go out for stereotypes of Latin men. When my agent sent me this audition I genuinely thought it was a mistake, the role was “lobster fisherman with thick Boston accent” I thought, I’m not from Boston, this is a mistake. I was so used to being portrayed a certain way that I didn’t think I was able to be anything else other than what I’ve been told I am. “Ethnically ambiguous” I figured what the hell I got nothing to lose and so I called @julialopriore and bless her heart she had her super Boston mom record the scene so I could work on the accent. So now this Colombian immigrant, raised in New York ended up playing a lobsterman with a boston accent. I’m grateful to have worked on this awesome show and a huge thanks to @bradfalchuk who directed the episode and managed to make this shoot work while we were out in the bay in freezing weather. Eleven days ago already! Rowing into the sunlight streaming over Oahu’s mountains felt incredible. So did my first shower. First meal. First hug. These five pictures show Sonam Tshering Sherpa nearing the summit of Mt. Everest on a windy 4th of October, 1992. Nine days before, we had reached the south summit (8,750 m, 28,704 ft) (me without supplemental oxygen), but had to return because it was too cold, too windy and my feet were becoming dangerously cold. This time -before starting our 2nd summit attempt- I spent two nights at the South Col (7,906 m / 25,938 ft) without supplemental O2. Unfortunately, once again, the wind was strong and so I finally decided to climb with one 2-litre bottle of oxygen. After taking this sequence of pictures, the battery of my SLR camera was empty - so our only summit shot was taken with Sonam’s disposable Fuji Quicksnap camera. I will show it in my next post. Behind Sonam, to the right, you see the starting part of the unclimbed east ridge of Nuptse, and straight behind him, you see the unclimbed southwest ridge of Lhotse. We were the only climbers on the summit of Mt. Everest that day, which is pretty rare nowadays. . . . . . Frames from this weekends sailing adventure on Lake Michigan. We found ourselves in a bit of a predicament once realizing our anchor wouldn’t hold near an islands cove we had initially planned on staying, prompting us to set sail in the middle of the night for the mooring. Heavy wind and waves made for an exceptional experience. Soaking wet and many hours later we arrived safely for the evening. Luckily to have seasoned sailors aboard to navigate through the chaotic weather. Certainly a night for the books. Cheers to good scotch and great friends that made it happen. The first onset of delirium due to exhaustion and sleep deprivation typical to ocean rowing is often experienced as hallucinating the sound of barking dogs. I often tried to understand what causes our brain to choose this sound in particular and I never managed to find a scientific answer but I found a poetic one: Just like mad dogs are rolling foam from their mouth, so are the waves at Beaufort 10 winds. Anyone that knows me will tell you I destroy gear. I try to take care of it as best I can but I struggle to find anything that can hold up to my abuse. The fact that I have been throwing this same dry suit thru the ringer for nearly 4 years a massive testimony to how bomber they made it. I am in this thing constantly and it just will not quit. I’ve guided the last few years in it two trips a day and kayaked in it every time I hit the river. This devils club has seen a staggering amount of miles on and off the water. I also struggle to find gear that fits me as a bigger guy and I’ve never once felt uncomfortable or restricted. I just can’t say enough good things. On a separate note @immersionresearch answered the call to duty to crank out heaps and heaps of PPE to keep your hard working health workers safe. After the pandemic started they put their own business on hold for the greater good. Amazing people, incredible equipment. Get your ass in some IR and show these hard working individuals the love and respect they’ve earned. Keep kicking ass IR! He is fascinated by the north, enjoys being a pioneer explorer, and testing his strength and technique. The traveller has set a goal: to visit all the key places and ports of the Northern Sea Route, and Dikson is exactly one of these ports. ⠀ According to Sergei, the following is what one should know if he or she dreams of conquering the Russian North on a vehicle. ⠀ 🔹Forget good roads. Even winter roads are not everywhere, and sometimes you have to make your way right across the snowy desert. ⠀ 🔹There arent many brave people travelling across the Arctic by car. One of his support team Mac Mackay, a member of the British Mountain Guides, said Neil is an inspiration to these men: Neil is the real motivation for all of them. When Seven Seas finally lifted the #Ivory tusk to deck by hand it was such a relief to see it was undamaged and still resting comfortably in its basket, the weather had been rough for us in October and it was not the best time to be surveying in the English Channel, however that was our only window. After we recovered the tusk we spent the rest of the day light hours looking at the extent of the wreck site and recording the new postions of the cannons that had been pulled off site by trawlers and dredgers. We then headed back into Falmouth, 9 hours steam each way. I bought my first sea kayak when I was 17. I used it to paddle around the rivers and lakes of Minnesota, but my dream was always to kayak by a tide-water glacier. I’d heard about mile-wide sheets of ice that would break and crash into the ocean, and I wanted to experience that in a kayak. Eventually I tried to make that idea a reality when I moved up to Seward, Alaska two summers later. After a lot of learning and practice, I became a sea kayak guide at @millerslanding. My job was to take travelers into Southcentral Alaska’s remote fjords. Bear encounters were common, sometimes we’d paddle by whales and the weather would go from sunny blue skies to 50-knot gale force winds and freezing rain. I must have lead 200 guided trips over the years. I was showing people an area that inspired me, and I loved it. To get back here brings me that same joy. #ThrowbackThursday On December 23, 2007, the 118 foot fishing vessel Argos Georgia broke down in the Ross Sea between Victoria Land and Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica. Though December is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, the extreme temperatures of the Antarctic still trapped the vessel in pack ice. Two previous attempts to deliver a spare piston to the vessel failed and no other vessels could aid the fishing boat, leaving the 25-person crew stuck and in peril. On January 4, 2008, a McChord C-17 Globemaster III participating in Operation Deep Freeze launched from Christchurch, New Zealand, and flew 11 hours to reach the stranded mariners. The C-17 crew airdropped 150 pounds of supplies, including a spare piston and 20 pounds of chocolate, abeam of the Argos Georgia. The highly-experienced #TeamMcChord crew demonstrated its ability to not only support the complex Antarctic National Science Foundation mission, but also to carry out humanitarian missions in some of the most unforgiving environments on Earth. - @62dairliftwing on Instagram
