Saying goodbye to 2018 is hard for me. This was the most impactful year of my life. Accepting my dream job as an AA flight attendant has been the biggest joy. But the last 3 1/2 months have been the hardest months of my life. Losing Rob has been the biggest trial I have ever experienced and starting a fresh year that Rob isn’t a part of is really hard and just doesn’t feel right. I needed him here, with me. Robert I will always keep your memory alive and will never forget the impact you had on my life. I am so extremely grateful for the time I had with him, it was nothing short of perfect. 📍Tasmania National Parks Hiking General Tips • 🇦🇺 Tasmania Australia • 🥾 Invest in a good pair of hiking boots and try to break them in before your trip. The most amazing hikes here are often on uneven surfaces and running shoes don’t provide enough support. These hikes are also often strenuous and some like Mt Amos are more of a climb and rock scramble and you really need to have appropriate footwear to make the hike easier and safer for you. Particularly if you visit in colder months when the ground can get muddy and wet. Hiking boots often stop your feet from getting soaked or slipping around. You really will miss out on the most spectacular views if you don’t go on these hikes, that you won’t see from the shorter easier walks. However we wear hiking boots often (even on easy walks) as we find them more comfortable and easier to power along. • 👕 Wear- comfortable layered walking clothes to keep you warm, but so that you’re able to take the layers off as you get warmer walking. Tassie is cooler than the rest of the country even in Summer. WARNING: weather at places like Cradle Mountain can change very quickly. You must be prepared with warm clothes and wet weather gear as it may snow at any time of the year. It’s important to be prepared. • 📝 The biggest misconception we had about Tassie was that the main “towns” like Hobart, Launceston and even places like Richmond were more “interesting” than less well known tourist places such as Bruny Island and the Tasman Peninsula. We ended up spending more time at these places as the walks were spectacular and there was more to do. • 🔍 We highly highly highly recommended you hire a car or even better hiring a camper van to camp at campsites during your visit rather than doing a tour. Particularly if you plan on visiting multiple parts and National Parks in the state. Found by CMM Fossil Club member Taylor Swanson along the shoreline near Matoaka Cabins in St. Leonard, this Ecphora meganae is a trauma survivor. 😱 Likely picked up and crushed in the mouth of a hungry fish, this shell was broken in three distinct spots along the main whorl, breaking through to the central columella. For reasons unknown, the hungry predator did not finish its meal that day and left this Ecphora battered and broken. Despite this trauma, the Ecphora did not die, and with time the outer whorls healed. However, the shell pieces did not realign, disrupting the growth of the siphonal canal. To compensate, the Ecphora grew a new siphonal canal giving it the appearance of having two “tails”. This forked “tail” end of the Ecphora is actually the front (i.e. anterior) end of the shell. Ben Kelly: 1993-2020 On May 9th, Ben Kelly was surfing in the waters of Santa Cruz County, when he was fatally attacked by a great white. Ben passed away doing what he loved and he left this world in complete peace. More than making a sale, Ben really cared about each surfer and always wanted to make sure they were riding a board that truly fit them best. He was passionate about creating an experience for surfers, not just a piece of equipment. He wanted people to realize their own talents and abilities to do great things, and he found joy in helping others experience the same stoke he felt out in the water. Ben enjoyed the entire process, from the concept and creativity of design, to the work of shaping a blank. To Ben, it was about finding the board inside the blank, and with that came infinite possibilities for creativity. Although the sting of his death is still very real and heartbreaking, I’ve been reminded each day of who Ben really was. The impact he wanted to make on others went so much deeper than just making someone a board. As proud as he was of this brand and business, I know Ben wouldn’t care to be remembered as just a great shaper or surfer. Ben wanted people to know the love of Jesus. His goal was always pointing to Christ through the way he lived and treated others. At the end of the day, he wanted people to experience the love and grace that God has to offer and know that they too can have an eternal hope and freedom in Christ - just like he had found. Ben knew his worth rested in Jesus Christ and that was the motivation behind everything he did. I want to thank all of you for supporting Ben in his passion as a shaper. Your stoke, encouragement, custom board orders and love for Ben meant so much to him and means so much to me. We are currently looking into ways of continuing Ben Kelly Surfboards. Ilha do Japonês - Cabo Frio, possui águas cristalinas e calmas, um lugar perfeito para relaxar com a família e amigos. Chegar na ilha é muito fácil, porém precisa ter alguns cuidados dependendo da idade. A pé: recomendo quando a maré estiver baixa, a água pode bater na cintura ou no peito dependendo do horário. Pessoas de idade podem ter muita dificuldade, pois a água dá uma puxadinha para direita. Crianças não devem ir a pé. O trajeto de barco e 5,00 por pessoa, então e um boa opção pra crianças e pessoas com dificuldades de locomoção. É uma delícia de passeio. Voor vandaag 6 juni 2020 hadden twee Crazy trailers van het eerste uur een plan. @maartenstorm en @redbeardrunning gingen een poging doen op de FKT van het Krijtlandpad in Limburg. Dit pad is 90.3 km lang en heeft ongeveer 800-1300 hoogtemeters. Het huidige record op naam van @thomasdunkie en @polderzwitser de polder zwitser staat nog steeds op 8 uur en 32 minuten. Naast deze twee lopers die onderweg een paar keer konden rekenen op de steun van broer Willem-Jan liepen er ook nog 3 lopers het hele Krijtlandpad just4fun. Bij de start nog gepaced op de eerste 30km door @ace_dave. De sfeer zat er direct al goed in! Na 42km kregen we het bericht dat Maarten en Jack behoorlijk aan het doorlopen waren. 3.32uur stond er op de klok. Vervolgens bleef het even stil aan het front. Na 61.83km kreeg Ron, Maarten aan de telefoon. Het was te hard gegaan, hij had zijn snelste 60km ooit gelopen en gooide de handdoek in de ring na 5 uur 27 minuten en 47 seconden. Helemaal opgeblazen maar wel erg blij met dit resultaat. Ron vroeg Maarten hoe het met Jack ging, Jack was doorgelopen vertwlde Maarten maar was een aantal keer fout gelopen en had problemen met zijn GPS. Helaas ook Jack stopte ermee vanwege voornoemde problemen, een vocht tekort, duizeligheid en besloot ook in de bezemwagen te stappen. Jack:We zijn samen begonnen en we eindigen ook weer samen...met een beertje. Eenmaal in de auto nog wel een lach van Jack, maar dan helaas een van een kiwi met snavelpijn. Ontzettend jammer natuurlijk na 5 uur 59 minuten en 13 seconden terwijl je dan toch al 65.94km hebt afgelegd. Beide heren zullen evalueren en mogelijk in de toekomst nog eens een poging wagen. Al met al sterk gelopen mannen! Pim, JP en Mike liepen het Krijtland heerlijk uit. Hebben genoten en kwamen na 13 uur 33 minuten en 43 seconden over de finish. Piha is top weekend destination for Aucklanders on the west coast, but small with a few cafes and shops. There is a campground and a reasonable amount of other accommodation. Given how amazingly beautiful it is, it continues to surprise at how traditionally kiwi it still looks. ⠀ ⠀ It is surrounded by high hills, cliffs and forest with some of the best surfing in the North Island. If you want to swim, the surf patrol area is at the south end of the beach near Lion Rock. Like all west coast beaches, it is not safe outside the flags. Sunset is a great time to be there, and several early evening and sunset shots are included in the series.⠀ ⠀ For a cool walk, find the track that goes from near the end of the beach at North Piha, then hike over the point to much smaller Whites Beach. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way. Our latest patient was rescued earlier this week from Byron Bay. This green sea turtle now named Zeke looks almost dead in the first photo. It is still early days for this beauty, however you can already see an improvement just after three days of being in care. Zeke was covered in marine leeches and was quite septic underneath. We got rid of the leeches with a freshwater bath and have started him on a course of antibiotics. Thank you to all that were involved in rescuing this poor animal. Theres a new mangrove species in Central-South America. Introducing Pelliciera benthamii - red-flowered mangrove pine aka mangle pinuela. A second species of the Pelliciera genus, an ancient flowering plant genus known from fossil records from the same area more than 50 million years ago! This rare mangrove tree has a very restricted distribution today in Central-South America – and it is highly threatened by coastal development and pollution. Previously grouped with Pelliciera rhizophorae, this species has some amazing and unique features. It is so unusual that botanists have had difficulty working out which plant family it belongs to. So it is currently grouped with two other oddity genera in the world in Tetrameristaceae. There are no known close relatives! Until recently it had only been known as one species from one genus. Now we know there are two species – although the presence of undefined hybrids show these two are closely related. The species has very attractive large flowers that are also spectacularly visited by small hummingbirds feeding on the high sugar content from its abundant nectaries. The fruits are pretty special also – having a large, well-developed single germinated seedling with large rounded cotyledons – all enclosed in a thick protective jacket with a pointed end. Given the restricted distribution and local threats, it is likely to be listed as Critically Endangered on the ICUN Red-LIst. - Spent the night on top Segla. This was a dream come true for me. We hiked up here (5 km hike total) during the last day of midnight sun for the year 2018. A sunset that never actually sets, instead lingers on the horizon. We actually never went to sleep, because of how mesmerizing it was up there.
Seriously underestimated the Great Dunes Climb at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore... It’s ‘only’ a 3.5 miler but feels like 10 when you’re walking on loose sand in 30C heat with the black flies snacking on you if you pause for a second! Last weekend a crew of us, established in my humble opinion the most beautiful Oregon ocean highline! 240m long and 85m off the deck it provided some really amazing sights and sounds! The line was 8m off level ahhahsha it fucking sucked lol turns out 8m Is alot to be off level, but hey sometimes you gottah do you! Beyond grateful to have gotten this dream of a line up with such and amazing crew! Thankyou to everyone who came out & shared some moments of this life. The line was rigged on feather pro main with one connection 40m out or 200m out depending on the direction your journey & white magic backup:) Althea also lived her best dog life and had so much fun playing on the beach while saying hi to everyone on the beach 😂 & she slayed the swimming so hard. Then heres something for you: As a conservation volunteer, you will work on practical tasks to improve the state of Studland’s dunes. Ruifeng 瑞鳳山 • •• ••• After some New Years bad luck (due to another, even worse bought of food poisoning, my second in 1.5 months), this post comes much later than initially planned. Unexpected and disappointing, as I had a hiking permit for a special trail lined up that I couldn’t take advantage of. I still managed to get out on a few other trails while recovering, posts to follow. Let’s catch up first. • •• This time around, we were exploring the amazing backcountry trails that open maps can lead to. What began as following the (planned) route for the Taipei Skyline Hike turned into an exciting adventure complete with forest, ocean, peaks scrambles and history 🧗♂️ • •• We started in Keelung and worked our way through the not thoroughly nor recently bushwhacked second half of the fourth section of the Taipei Skyline Trail. That was a mouthful. Just like the trail. There was very much so a lot going on. We traversed many different landscapes and tread among many historical features on and off beaten paths 🏞 • •• Highlights: sprawling mini mausoleum cemeteries, dense grass, urban ruins, old, overgrown forts, views of mountains meeting the Pacific Ocean, a massive quarry and much foliage and vegetation, along with many ropes in between. Broke, exhausted and saturated. Confession time guys, not too long ago I was driving a car that cost me $500 (was all I could afford) and I had to use gaffer tape to hold the canvass roof together. One day I was driving to an audition in the pouring rain, fuel light on empty, on a busy freeway, when so much water collected in the sagging roof the tape gave way, dropping close to a buckets worth of rain all over me. Made it to the audition soaking wet, didn’t get the gig, but also didn’t give up. I’ve had more rejection than I can count, but I wouldn’t be doing what I do today if I gave in to that voice inside my head that kept saying I wasn’t good enough and to stop following my dreams. The Luangwa and Zambezi rivers; teeming with hippos, crocodiles, water birds and plains game coming to drink, are the lifelines to the Lower Zambezi and Luangwa National Parks. Through BCP’s Luangwa Community Forest Project (LCFP) and Lower Zambezi RED+ Project (LZRP) both of these vital rivers are safeguarded to do what they do best – to protect and feed their ecosystems. In order for an eco-system to thrive, so must its river, and in order for a river to thrive, so must its environment. Für Einige fiel der Sommerurlaub 2020 wegen Corona ins Wasser. Aus war der Traum von der Fernreise zu exotischen Orten! 🌴 Also musste irgendwie eine Alternative her.
