One of the suckiest things about this pandemic is that usually, the thing that keeps us going through difficult times is community, togetherness, closeness, connection. Back before the first lockdown, I think most of us say this as something temporary, and the thought that we’d soon be able to renew those connections kept us going through the daily death counts, home-schooling, isolation and constant government screw ups. All of those little things we took for granted, like holding your best friend’s baby, grasping someone’s hand to ground them, helping someone to load their shopping into their car when they’re struggling. The things that made us feel like part of something bigger. There’s only so long that FaceTime and phone calls will do. We need each other. So if the thought of living this odd half-life for at least another six months has floored you, that’s ok, and normal. If you’re having to reach for new coping mechanisms, all I can advise is to try and make it something that won’t harm your future. We’ll get through this. Promise. - @myfrugalyear on Instagram

I’m almost 21 and this hits home for me. Countless times I’ve experienced little sly comments from others being amazed that I didn’t get my license the day I turned 17. People insinuated that I was lazy or just too dependent on my parents. But people don’t see the whole story. For me- in my neighborhood- it was like an immediate thing- once you turned 17 you would get your license and a car. So many of my peers got their license, which often times made me feel like an outlier. Looking back on it now- I still deal with a lot of shame and insecurity around the fact that I don’t have my license- but one day I’ll hopefully have it. People don’t see that not everyone has the resources to take lessons, some may not be able to afford a car, others may have health issues that affect their driving, or have driving anxiety and more. Also- some may have parents who refuse to take them driving or don’t have anyone to teach them (and some people can’t afford to go pay a driving school) People don’t see below the surface level- if you are over the age of 18 and don’t have a license- you are not a failure or a disgrace. Be gentle with yourself. For me personally, I have a lot of driving anxiety that prevented me from driving and when I was 15, I wasn’t even in school to take drivers ed- which delayed the entire process of me getting my license. Honestly do what is best for you and what you think is best. One of my mentors said he sold his course for like 25 dollars until people started to believe in him, and now he charges 4000 plus. It is crazy how people don’t believe in you when you first start and then when you take off is when they are creeping up and expect the same price lol.
