Life is messy. People cry. They bleed, sneeze, cough, snot, puke, pee and poop. Sometimes theyll do a few of these all at once. ▪︎ That’s not all that surprising, but if we told you that there was an ad that celebrated all of that and it was totally, unashamedly and downright beautiful, would you be surprised? We certainly were - in an extremely positive way - the first time we watched this spot for Kruger Products, a Canadian tissue manufacturer. ▪︎ The spot marks a first in a couple of senses. Its the first for the brand under the leadership of new CMO Susan Irving, since she joined Kruger from PepsiCo. Its also the first campaign from @brokenheartloveaffair, the agency that was launched earlier this year by Canadian industry veterans Carlos Moreno, Jay Chaney, Denise Rossetto, Todd Mackie and Beverley Hammond. The agencys vision for Kruger - the beauty of human life and all the snot and wee and blood that comes with it - has been brought to life in beautiful fashion by director Mark Zibert. ▪︎ Whats more, the entire campaign is particularly noteworthy within a category that is bogged down by deeply entrenched category conventions of stressed-out over-actors in obvious sets, overblown claims of absorbancy, and the like. Good Thanks, You? was one v. special short I produced last summer. Based on true story from @maamw, this short was about how fucked up the system is when it comes to the authorities dealing with sexual assault and rape. Its something so lovely and invigorating that I find myself trying to cook up new projects just for the opportunity to be a part of it again. ⠀ Cole has this great relaxed, focused presence on set while somehow bringing a spontaneous energy to what he puts onscreen. His lighting and his camera are such exciting storytellers and performers that I find myself setting the stage and then stepping back to enjoy the interplay of him navigating the scene alongside our cast. I think shooting on film gave us the most beautiful but raw way to capture those discoveries on set. Benjamin (2018) Shot in summer 2017, Benjamin was directed by Simon Amstell @thisissimonamstell .The DP was Dave Pimm @davepimm and we chatted in prep trying to figure out the exact look Simon wanted. During the shoot I think Dave achieved a great balance between both vérité and a classic cinematic style. Focusing on colour and not flashy back-lighting was a good example of this. Simon and Daves references reminded me of Wong Kar Wais earlier films, and hopefully the stills Ive selected show this. Its a style I like a lot. I must also take my hat off to The Beast that is Production. On this job I had a shiny new van, with shiny new kit, and many shiny faces with increasingly dirty hands. Everything that I politely requested was graciously granted, and having such a good and capable production team backing you is a luxury. That was Jess Hodges @jessicalauriehodges Alex Breedes @alexandrabreede and Louise Simpsons @anastasiaschiffer valiant work! Best Boy was the dreamy Kit Wood @kitwood90 accompanied by old guard Connor Adam @tallguyconnor and Chris Barber @ct.barber . Although Connor spent most of it on holiday in Italy getting driving fines. Or cruising around London in Ubers. Dave also patiently stuck with us when the team suffered from mass hysteria after having only sleeping for three hours. There was a Hawaiian shirt day. A bin in the camera van smelt like a dead badger. We witnessed the excellent Art Departments festoon drama. On Chris birthday the two of us ended up in some Korean restaurant/basement until the small hours, the next day Kit handed me a radio and told me to sit down. Fortunately I had eight in the team that day and so I learnt a lot about delegating. However there were no real misadventures and it has to be the smoothest and most trouble-free shoot Ive been on. Unsurprisingly its also a good watch! The equipment was all fairly simple once more, tungstens, a few HMIs, LiteMats and plenty of practicals. - @ben.milla on Instagram

Today is a huge day for me. This short is super special to me for so many reasons. Azaar is the second film @myrian.raja and I did together and tells the story of a young girl who wants to become a woman, but learns the cost of womanhood from her mothers fate after her mothers affair with a visiting man to the village is exposed to the tribe. Myriam and I spoke about a camera that bore witness to the events, so we tried to cover each scene in as few shots as possible and let shots develop instead of cut. This gives the film a really tense energy. During prep, Myriam and I had the luxury of going to each exterior location we planned on shooting and photographing the light from sunrise to sunset every hour on the hour. This meant later in prep we could schedule the best light for the story and be in the right place at the right time. It also gave us loads of time to talk about the story in the locations we were going to shoot. I only used bounce and neg for the exterior lighting, which let us move much quicker, so we worked with the sun rather than against it. Everyone who worked on this film bought their best work. So it was fantastic to catch up with everyone when we were lucky enough to be nominated for British Short at the BAFTAs this year. I have to say a massive thank you to @arri_rental and @the_alix_milan for their incredible support on the project, and @stuartharris, @oliverstapleton_bsc, and @duncanqbruce. . This will be my last post on the @austcine insta. Its been super fun sharing some work with you and answering some questions. Thank you so much to the ACS for having me and hope youve enjoyed it! 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲. Everything feels heavy in the air. Theres dread and uncertainty, loneliness, fear, 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞. Its okay to feel vulnerable right now. Weve been through more in a matter of months than most of us ever will in our lives. Weve witnessed heinous injustice and those unashamed to continue to defend it. Weve experienced personal heartbreaks and set backs and loss. Everything feels heavy because it 𝐢𝐬 heavy. We have to make choices. We have to know where we stand and hold that ground...all while trying to take care of our hearts and minds? Thats a tall order. The storm is real and who knows when it will pass. Take a look at the people around you- they may put on a happy mask and nurture those around them...but ignore the need to do it for themselves. I know Im guilty of this. Even more so now than ever. There is strength is Vulnerability. Vulnerability is the bridge to connection with others, but its absolutely a difficult bridge to cross.
