Dzień z książką Kajś Zbigniewa Rokity. 1. I łażę tak od lat wzdłuż tej międzywojennej polsko-niemieckiej granicy, która podzieliła Śląsk i która wciąż każdego dnia nie pozwala o sobie zapomnieć. Mijam poniemieckie zabudowania i zastanawiam się, jak w Grodnie, Samborze czy Wilnie brzmiałoby w ustach Białorusinów, Ukraińców czy Litwinów słowo „popolskie”. 2. Domy celne zostawały, choć dziś nie są już bastionami cywilizacji germańskiej i słowiańskiej, nie oddzielają Republiki Weimarskiej czy III Rzeszy od II Rzeczypospolitej. Są zabawnie zwykłe. W tych na dzisiejszej granicy Rudy Śląskiej i Zabrza mieszczą się Centrum Terapii Słuchu Słuchmed oraz żłobek Dzieciątka Jezus. 3. Albo linie tramwajowe – na przykład tory z polskiego Chorzowa do polskiego Szarleju biegły przez niemiecki Bytom. Harold Evans, the wonderful and courageous British editor (and husband of Tina Brown) has died at age 92. It was Evans, as editor then of The (London) Observer who published this tough and gruesome icon of the first Gulf War by Contact’s Ken Jarecke. By then Time, who Ken was on assignment for in the Gulf refused to publish it. Jarecke made it available to the AP under pool rules. It was transmitted to NY where AP spiked it judging it too tough to go out on the wire to its member papers. On March 3, ten days or so after Jarecke made the picture on the so-called “Highway of Death” in Basra, Evans saw the image and knew right away it had to be published for the very same reasons Jarecke took it: unless the horrors of war are seen no one will ever believe how horrific battle is. Writing in an essay in The Observer to defend his action Evans wrote: “No action can be moral if we close our eyes to its consequences. Here, in charred flesh and grinning skull, was the price of Patriotism.” Seeing this gruesome image continued Evans did something to redress “the elusive euphoria of a high-tech war.” It would be six months later that the image was published in the U.S. in American Photo by editor David Schonauer. Eloquent, witty and sharp, Evans was a friend of photography til the end. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Tina and family. Recently I was invited to join 60 other top wildlife photographers from around the world to be part of @printsforwildlife. This is a new global campaign to raise funds for conservation across Africa to help support rangers and communities because of the impacts of Covid. The temporary shutdown of safari tourism in Africa because of Covid means there is far less revenue for supporting national parks, rangers and local people who protect the continent’s wild animals. Prints for Wildlife brings together 60 top wildlife photographers who have each donated one of their favourite photographs, to be printed in a limited edition of 50 prints, and sold for US$100 each. I’ve donated “Imfolozi Giraffe” to the cause, and I’ve been told this week it is one of the 20 top-selling prints. So get your order in quickly if you want one! Once Imfolozi Giraffe has sold out, I’ll be donating a second favourite image of mine (“Mana Pools Elephant”). All funds from Prints for Wildlife will go to @africanparksnetwork, which is, in my opinion, the most effective large conservation organisation on the continent. In conjunction with local governments, African Parks currently manage 18 national parks across Africa, in 11 countries such as Republic of Congo, DRC, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Chad, Angola, Rwanda and Central African Republic. Over the past few years I’ve worked several times as a photographer for African Parks and have always been hugely impressed and inspired by the work they are doing. They are making a meaningful difference, right now, on the ground, where it counts. @printsforwildlife have already raised over US$110 000, and the campaign still has a few weeks to go. A follow friday with a throwback to 2014 and the end of the Shoreditch as we knew it, to the days of empty backstreets, dark corners, vacant lots, rooftops, secret bars, the original street beers and copious amounts of walls to paint. The character is the Dark Elf Warrior and I painted her in homage to the great Jim Murray.
