When you spend so much quality time both above and below the ice with charismatic and vulnerable species like emperor penguins, you get emotional when they are given protection. Several years ago, more than 650,000 square miles of the Ross Sea around Antarctica (an area the size of Spain and France combined) was protected under The Commission of the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (#CCAMLR), an organization that works to conserve and protect wildlife that inhabits the Southern Ocean. This year’s CCAMLR annual meeting has already started, and members from 24 nations and the European Union have the opportunity to move forward three proposed Marine Protected Areas: Eastern Antarctica, the Weddell Sea, and the Antarctic Peninsula. Marine protected areas remain one of the most crucial tools for sustaining ecosystem health and curbing #climatechange. Curious Macaroni penguin. . As photogenic as these amazing birds🐧 are, I really haven’t had many good opportunities to photograph them. Reasons... Although they are the worlds most numerous penguin, they tend to nest in locations that are very difficult/remote to visit. I am lucky to visit one location on occasion, the incredible island of South Georgia. However once there, the macaroni colonies are on fairly steep slopes, that are just difficult to visit on foot.(I’ve never visited one). Saying that, what’s your favourite penguin species? . ⁣A tan-colored leucistic Adélie penguin attracts the attention of a potential mate. Leucism is a rare condition resulting in a partial loss of pigmentation to the skin, hair, or in this case, feathers. Despite the loss of countershading camouflage (the black backs of these penguins make it more difficult for predators to spot them from above when they are swimming), this bird has made it to adulthood just fine. Photo by @FransLanting Most Emperor penguins never touch land in their lives. Their habitat is sea ice. But the rapid warming of Antarctica threatens the base of their existence: The ice is melting out from under their feet. A recent study reported that the world’s second largest Emperor colony suffered a catastrophic breeding failure for 3 years in a row because of changing ice conditions. In 2016, thousands of chicks are thought to have drowned when the sea ice broke up before they were ready to swim. I know firsthand which hardships Emperors face, because I camped out for a month with them on sea ice. I was pleased that the Center for Biological Diversity is using my testimony in its legal effort to get Emperors recognized as an endangered species by the U.S government. For the CBD lawsuit I stated, Emperor penguins are as vulnerable and important a symbol for the effects of climate change in Antarctica as polar bears are for the Arctic.” If Emperors get listed, we can put the requirements of the Endangered Species Act to work on their behalf. The Endangered Species Act has been an essential tool that has aided the recovery of wolves, bald eagles, condors and many other species. The Trump administration however, is trying to weaken its provisions. If you care, let your elected officials know how you feel. Emperors need the support of ice and we need to support the CBD. And at long last, Im delighted to invite you all to the latest Instagram Live, taking place next Wednesday 30th September at the usual time of 7pm-8pm. This week will be all about Penguins, due to popular request! We’ll be taking a look at the different forms of these charismatic birds in water and on land. As penguins are social animals, we will be drawing multiple birds and creating relationships between them and a narrative on the page. I’ll be working in fineliner pen and adding some splashes of colour with coloured pencils, and will of course have some super cute penguin facts for you all. As always, this will be a step-by-step drawing tutorial from reference images that you can follow along with live, so all ages and abilities are very welcome! To take part you’ll need to download the Reference Image Pack – available via the link in profile. More information will be released closer to the time regarding materials. En 2019, un equipo de la BBC publicó unas imágenes en las que aparecía un pingüino completamente negro, sin la característica tripa de color blanco de los pingüinos emperador. ¿Por qué es único? Aunque en 2010 también se publicaron unas imágenes de un pingüino color azabache, se trata de animales muy raros de ver. Probablemente se trate de un problema de melanismo, una mutación genética que provoca un exceso de pigmentación que acaba provocando una coloración negra a toda la piel, como en el caso de la pantera negra. In Saint Andrews Bay, there are over 200,000 mating pairs of king #penguins (yes, you read that right!). My first trip to Antarctica was in 2016 - not only was it a mind blowing trip for me but also a really influential time in my life looking back. ⁠ ⁠ This was shortly after I’d decided against pursuing a career in finance. In this limbo period, I found myself in this surreal landscape pondering all of the big questions in life. ⁠ ⁠ Out of the many insights that came from that trip, one was that I have always felt an intrinsic sense of meaning when spending time in nature. It has always been time well spent and when I look back on those memories there is never a question in my mind about what I could rather have been doing - the aim became simple, to seek out more of those experiences. - @sean_viljoen on Instagram

Or in this case, a lot of penguins. Once found, most penguins mate year after year with the same partner. Mates are chosen by the symbolic giving of a pebble. Male penguins search for the perfect pebble on the beach...one that can be the foundation of a new and beautiful nest. It had to be just the right size and shape...no inferior pebble will do! If the female accepts the pebble then she has accepted the male as her mate, and they will somehow find each other year after year in the colonies of hundreds of thousands of birds. However, if for some reason one of them does not show up to the colony, the show must go on and the female is free to accept a new pebble from a new suitor. I first heard about South Georgia Island while working on a story as a photo editor at National Geographic Traveler magazine. Ever since this elusive Antarctic isle known for its abundant wildlife has been on my travel list. A few weeks ago I finally set foot in Saint Andrews Bay, home to over 200,000 pairs of king penguins. There are no photos or documentaries that can effectively convey the feeling of being surrounded by so much wildlife in person. I was absolutely humbled by the wonder of nature and it brought me to unexpected tears. Smile! The chinstrap penguin name comes from the thin line of black that extends from either side of their black cap, under the chin. Looking straight on, it almost appears as a smile, with their bill more like a nose. Visiting Antarctica, experiencing its breathtaking landscapes and being so close to incredible wildlife is truly a unique experience, and makes one understand the need to protect this last great wilderness. Later this year, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (#CCALM) will consider creating three new marine protected areas in the Southern ocean, which would go a long way protecting this critical region. Cogliamo questi spunti per provare a rispondere ad alcune di queste attraverso la nuova rubrica #losapeviche. Ecco il terzo quesito: come mai i pinguini hanno dei braccialetti colorati alla base delle ali? Servono per riconoscerli gli uni dagli altri. I pinguini non presentano dimorfismo sessuale, ovvero nessuna differenza esteriore di colore delle piume, di forma o dimensione tra maschi e femmine e sono praticamente identici tra loro. Ovviamente il nostro staff che si prende cura di loro quotidianamente li riconosce da tanti piccoli dettagli che fanno la differenza, ma per essere certi oltre ogni ragionevole dubbio di distinguerli, si usano questi bracciali.
