SIGNS OF THE TIMES Making use of the outdoor area at Newlyn Art Gallery is an offering us inspiration, hope and change. Our outdoor billboard exhibition presents works by artists from around the UK. During the recent Covid-19 crisis many people connected through art, and used creative ways of staying together as a community. These billboards amplify powerful messages that are responding to this time. We hope this exhibition acts as a bold, colourful and hopeful message in Newlyn. Thought to be the largest children’s library in any hotel in the UK, it is home to more than 800 books appealing to children of all ages as well as a selection of great reads for adults. We invited along some local children who were treated to David reading the chapter Windy Mindy from his book, The Worlds Worst Children. He said: “In a world of deadlines and constant interruptions, many families are juggling work, personal commitments and their lives are currently restricted due to the pandemic. James Washington Manning has joined the CAPA community as the new Chair of the Dance Department! —— James Washington Manning, a native of Rochester, NY, graduated from the Conservatory at Point Park University. James was the first male recipient of the Brazzy Award given for outstanding achievement in the field of dance. He was a founding member of the August Wilson Dance Ensemble, and also performed with Owen/Cox Dance Group, Houston Met Dance Company and Ballet INC in New York City. James has also been seen on the stages of Paper Mill Playhouse, Pittsburgh CLO, Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center and Broadway Dance Lab. As an educator, James has been on faculty and served as the Dance Department Lead at Westinghouse Arts Academy for the last three years alongside teaching across the country with Revel Dance Convention. James is thrilled to be joining the CAPA community as the Dance Department Chair teaching High School Jazz. When not teaching, he enjoys traveling, podcasts, the beach and spending time with family. This is a vendor appreciation post. This is also an old photo of Todd, pre kidney transplant. Todd is an amazing human, an incredibly hard worker and the passionate owner of @poboys_and_pies. He has come through for us countless times during our reopening process, showing up to serve food so we can be open and serve beers. He did it during the summer at Beers at Hale Farm and he is doing it tonight at The Dock. He doesn’t want or expect praise, but he is getting it today. We are forever grateful to him and his team for their dedication to our customers and our business. In partnership, select artist-run centres have curated two artists to takeover PIA’s Instagram for one week each. Our fourth collaborating gallery is Open Studio who has chosen Michelle Forsyth to be at the helm from now until the end of the week. Michelle Forsyth’s practice combines process-rich photographs with objects that she has made by hand, over time. Much of her work involves the laborious replication of textiles through weaving, knitting, and screen printing. These objects are presented in photographs as wrapped, or bundled formed around personal notes that are intentionally kept secret. Overall, the work celebrates autobiography, and each finished piece accompanied by a poetic text passage when shown. Michelle Forsyth holds an MFA from Rutgers University and a BFA from the University of Victoria. Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including: Mulherin + Pollard, (New York, NY); Zaum Projects (Lisbon, Portugal); The BRIC Arts Media House (Brooklyn, NY); Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (Doha, Qatar); Pentimenti Gallery (Philadelphia, PA); and Auxiliary Projects (Brooklyn, NY). Michelle Forsyth is represented by @CorkinGallery and currently holds the Nick Novak Fellowship @OpenStudio_Toronto. She is an associate professor at OCAD University (Toronto, ON). Open Studio is an artist-run centre dedicated to contemporary print. I still remember the first article I read by Julia Reed. I remember where I was (California) and what it was about (hostess gowns). A quick Google search lead me to the NYT article. It was March 30, 2003. I then discovered that she was a fellow Mississippian. Like everyone else, I wanted to meet this woman. Many years later, Julia walked into @foundhouston. I could not see her, but I knew that voice from her “talking head” days on MSNBC and CNN. I was thrilled to host Julia for a book signing for her Julia Reed’s South. Found has hosted many book signings, but it’s the first time the attendees insisted that the author speak (she complied). Thanks Julia for the memories. Dan Warners passing took us all by surprise, exactly a year ago. He was a true part of the Contante & Sonante musicians team, laying down his magical guitars on around twenty songs since 2009, most of them, if not all, produced and arranged by Tomi Malm. She chose to work despite having the option of staying at home with unemployment because she refused to see the restaurant shut down when people needed it the most. Not everyone knows what it took to simply keep our doors open during this pandemic — even during the apex. Each of our team leaders stepped up to get the entire organization through this crisis. I’ve come to believe that the human spirit is one of the strongest things in existence. It’s just incredible what people can accomplish, endure and/or recover from! People get down on humans all the time, focusing on the destruction, the pain, the negativity, but how about the resourcefulness, the kindness, the generosity and hope! We tend to focus on the bad but I want to be someone that focuses on what people can do, what we will do if we choose. There is a strength in us, in you and me. There’s a power to push through, to fight! I think it’s our greatest strength. Think of all you’ve come through to get to where you are. How much of it, at the time, felt impossible. We don’t come this far to fade away. Things in general are really hard for a lot of people, but we’re strong. And? We have each other. That makes us even stronger! What’s your storm right now? What’s pushing back against you? Do your clear skies seem close at hand or far off and barely visible? Either way, you have such strength! You can make it! And what are clear skies? There is no such thing as a self made person. We are a collection of everything and everyone we’ve ever interacted with. Whether in small seemingly insignificant moments, or profound life changing experiences. If we don’t believe we are a part of a system, a collective, we won’t and cannot take care of it or eachother. This idea of self made makes us selfish. It tricks us into thinking that we are only responsible for ourselves. We need to own our autonomous power, but also realize how that power has the ability to profoundly impact others. We are conditioned to compete when our hearts want to collaborate. We sacrifice things in order to ‘win’ something that was never a competition to begin with. Our scarcity, fears, and survival mechanisms come into place and take over, when what we are truly made for is cooperating, sharing resources, and leaning into the idea that there is enough for all of us. We can all flourish. I can strive to create and live the life I desire, while also simultaneously holding space for others realities that are not my own, and working together for communal liberation, wholeness and success. It’s the paradox of life - being an individual entity responsible for themselves, while also being a part of a whole, responsible for the wellbeing of the collective. It’s one of the reasons I am launching a membership community called The Lighthouse Collective in October. A place for socially and spiritually conscious entrepreneurs who are in need of a space and community that supports them. We all need safe havens where we are able to charge our light, so that we can keep sharing our gifts with others. It’s a community-focused collective mixed with learning, support, rediscovery, deep nourishment and a space that focuses on you—the person behind the business. While we are individuals, we are also a part of something larger than ourselves. Come join a collective that is focused on supporting ourselves, each other, and our communities as a whole. I’m feeling strong, fit and “READY TO ROAR” 🦁 These attached pics will give you a small peak at what a pleasurable week this has been as I can’t say enough about all the courtesy & amazing 1st class service Im receiving from all here at the W Hotel which has been sending me surprises & gifts from the moment I checked in. Starting with a delicious food & drink tray awaiting me when I first walked into my suite along with special notes written large on the mirrors of my room welcoming me to UFC Fight Island to surprise night time knocks on my door in their Hazmet suits to serve me a table with special warm water & tea with honey & various condiments along with a bottle of fine white wine & a specially made glass encased frame depicting a microphone image meant to keep my voice show ready for Fight Night which was very original. Excerpts: Mirene: It’s true that writing isn’t essential to survival if survival means, literally, saving a life, but I’ve been trying to avoid thinking in hierarchies of needs. Immediate needs require immediate action, but your rage is also essential. Working through language in times of crisis is extremely important: we must articulate the grammar of our loss and the syntax of our demands, and I’m not sure that the humanitarian language that typically circulates in the wake of destruction is able to do that. Lina: Therefore, for me, there is always a fundamental difference in perspective when you are writing from within the site of immediate, life-threatening disaster, whether as a direct victim of capitalism or racism or war (how to disentangle all three anyway), and when you are writing from the place of perpetual forgetfulness outside it. And everything I write, here and elsewhere, is always aware of and colored by that perspective. My father has always been a wordsmith and I’ve appreciated his expression of encouragement and empowerment throughout my life. He had a health scare back in November that shook my family to the core. He has since recovered but I wanted to do something really special for his birthday last month that signified the importance his words have held on my life. One thing I’ve noticed, not only in my life but in the lives of the people I work with - is that when you are faced with a challenge and you move forward to embrace and conquer that challenge, inevitably you are rewarded. This happens on several levels. Firstly we are wired to be rewarded by our hormone system for moving into and through challenge by a dopamine hit. Secondly the universe also rewards you in countless different ways; getting a better job; a better relationship; more money; better health. Funny, this was originally meant to be a promo blitz to kick off my fundraiser for @splcenter , but having come out a bit later than expwcted, it feels more like a celebration to share with everyone who helped donate, contribute creatively, and promote the cause of raising $22K for an awesome cause. Twenty-two thousand dollars! THANK YOU! Im super proud of the hard work, but in the most genuine and non-bullshitty, non-performative way I can try put it on a social post, theres miles of work ahead to unfuck the system and ourselves (white people). 99% of it isnt going to get any press, any social media, any likes, or any attention at all, since it happens inwardly. Thats the work that is also the hardest, because unfucking your own awareness, role, and unconscious complacency/defensiveness of an invisible yet inescapable minefield is like learning to see the world for the first time, for what it really is, and why none of us are above culpability if we exist as white in it. But hey, we love our pep talk about doing the work, leaning in, no pain no gain, blahblahblah athleisure manifestos to live by. Guess what? If thats really as true for me and my work ethic as Id like to believe, then I dont want to suddenly be a hypocrite and not do the work here. Work which matters more than anything else I apply that ethic to. For me, that means not dismissing or deflecting or intellectualizing the discomfort of what white culture, fragility, complacency, good guyisms, positive intentions, etc does if you arent white. And Im ashamed to say it took a cataclysmic world for me to take it as seriously as I should have. So, this is a small slice of what Ive been feeling, alongside all the gratitude of talking to others on a similar path of awareness, and also making some dope speakers for some great humans who stepped up for the cause. And as I mentioned, 100% of all speakers sold this month will continue to go the @splcenter Which is great, but even better is to do the work on yourself, be uncomfortable, and work on your conversational stamina if youre trustworthy enough to be offered feedback from someone on how to be a better anti-racist. I am not a traditional talk therapist. We know that teatoxes and diet gummy bears are garbage so why do we let the same media tactics bully us? - Dont get me wrong, there are good influencers and companies out there, but if a person, a page, an ad, is making you feel less-than, its time to unfollow. - Fitness should be about how you FEEL. Stronger. Empowered. That feeling of Holy fuck, I just DID that! Its about health. Mental and physical. Not a number or a scale, a clothing size, or any tangible metric. Trust me, nobody wants to be the hot one with all the insecurity. Were not putting up with that in 2020. - Every body was made to move. Every body is worthy. Today marks 2 years since I broke my back and had my upper Lumbar Spine permanently fused. Looking back I am infinitely grateful to my family, friends and community who stood by and continue to stand by me and support me through the physical, emotional, and often non-linear trials of recovery. Today, I feel more capable, healthier than ever and extremely lucky to continue experiencing the mountains and sharing them with others. Rob Mustard, our new President of the Board, began his commitment to the Westfield United Fund shortly after moving to Westfield 25 years ago. In addition to noticing our huge thermometer near the train station, Rob and his wife were introduced to the United Fund by friends and quickly became donors. Once Rob stopped commuting and working in the city, he dedicated himself to giving back and joined our Board. A commitment to volunteerism is something he and his wife share. Rob is also a volunteer for Literacy NJ, one of the WUF’s beneficiaries. And he teaches math to people seeking their High School Equivalency certificate. 🌸Another week gone already 😳 . 1. One of life’s little annoyances is bread getting stuck in the toaster. It gets stuck straight away, so by the time you realise, it has welded itself to the bars and comes off in tiny pieces, leaving one little bit to burn and stink out the kitchen. . 2. I was wondering why my kids put empty milk cartons in the fridge. Then I realised that it’s my fault. I replace it with a full carton and they think it’s magic. Empty carton goes in and becomes full carton 😂 . 3. It’s such a great feeling when you wake up after a bad dream and think phew, just a dream. Conversely, it’s very annoying waking up after a good dream and realising, it’s just a dream. . 4. When you have to prove you aren’t a robot when filling in an online form, you are trying to convince a machine that you are not a machine . 5. Why do we say ‘Hey Stranger’ to people we know . 6. Doors should always be pull to enter, push to leave. Public toilets, obviously. Coffee shops because on the way out you are carrying cups. This is so simple and yet I am constantly pulling open doors with my elbows. . 7. #forgive Das hier ist ein Ausschnitt aus dem @stern Nr. 29 vom Anfang Juli. Titelthema: #Verzeihen und genau darüber spreche unter anderem ich in diesem Artikel. Bevor die Anfrage für das Interview kam war ich mir ehrlicherweise gar nicht so richtig bewusst, wie wichtig es für meine eigene Recovery war, dass ich mir selber verzeihe. Ich habe den Aspekt eher unter „radikale Akzeptanz“ gepackt: „War eben so. Kann ich nicht mehr ändern. Wusste es halt nicht besser.“ Beim Gespräch wurde mir aber bewusst, dass sich mein Verhältnis zu mir selbst dank Therapie nach und nach verändert hat, und dass „der alten Dommi“ zu verzeihen ein entscheidender Schritt war, um aus der Selbst-Feindschaft eine Selbst-Freundschaft zu machen. Ich wollte mich nicht so behandeln, ich war krank und hätte Hilfe gebraucht - es war kein Vorsatz, kein freier Wille, sondern Hilflosigkeit und ein Versuch, zu überleben. Und es war bestimmt nicht die beste Option, aber damals die (scheinbar) einzige. Darüber hinaus hat das Thema mich aber auch noch nach dem Gespräch begleitet weil Verzeihen für mich nicht nur in den Großen, sondern auch in den kleinen Dingen liegt. Dass ich nicht ewig mit mir hadere, wenn etwas nicht so klappt wie ich es mir vorgenommen habe, mich nicht beschimpfe oder verurteile sondern Verständnis für mich habe, verstehe warum ich so gehandelt habe und mir dann selbst verzeihe. Und wichtig dabei ist mir: verzeihen heißt für mich nicht vergessen. Verzeihen heißt abschließen, wachsen, lernen, kindness und compassion zeigen - in meinem Fall mit mir. Ich habe also mal wieder am eigenen Leib erfahren, dass man Dinge manchmal aussprechen muss um sie zu verstehen.
