🔸Friday Fact 🔸Above is an extraordinary photo of American hip hop group N.W.A. in Brixton, 1991. The photo recently surfaced on social media, capturing a rare and iconic moment. Left to right are some of the artists, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren. N.W.A. have performed twice at Brixton O2 Academy, first on June 9 1990 and again the following year on December 12 1991. In 2015, the biopic drama Straight Outta Compton (dir. F. Gary Gray, 2015) was premiered at The Ritzy. Rapper Ice Cube made a surprise appearance at the screening, and was accompanied by his son O’Shea Jackson Jr who plays his father in the film. It is with an absolutely devastated and heavy heart that I bid farewell to our OG, the one and only Blewfoot. May he Rest In Peace knowing he brought joy and funk to many lives all over the world. I first met Troy in the mid 2000s after Mike said, “yo, I think I met the funkiest guy of all time, you got to meet him!” And indeed, whether it was his encyclopedic knowledge of funk or r&b, his ability to turn a drum kit into an astral traveling mothership, his deft unicycle riding, or his never ending collection of cassette tape mixes - he truly kept it funky. He welcomed me with open arms and heart and proceeded to continually whoop my ass in dominoes. Every moment I ever spent in his presence felt like it needed to be captured, he was too unique, too funny, too real - A human too funky for this cookie cutter plane and too humble not to share himself with us. As time went on, moments spent on his porch listening to tapes, playing dominoes and telling stories basically became the FunDMC album - Just as he had opened up that world to us, we attempted to capture it and bring it you. The vast majority of that album was recorded live in Blewfoots backyard and front porch - it is as much field recording as rap album. He opened it all to us and his generosity knew no bounds. He would support PUTS to the ends of the earth and he would give a stranger his Funkadelic shirt off his back. And whether it was acting in the Highlighter Promo, Riding Unicycle and playing Keytar in the Trippin At The Disco Video, reading off your dedications for WRLA on 12SP, or countless other appearances - Blewfoot is as much a member of PUTS as Mike or I and I am absolutely blessed to have spent even one minute in his presence. Let me paint a picture for you this Friday morning. Some know the feeling - the distant, isolated, not connected, frustrated, alone, uncertain feeling all because of COVID...... Now, I want you all to take a moment to think about a mother. A mother who had a child in her belly or in her arms, or one that was playing with her 15 month old in the grass...THEN within the blink of eye, that mother is no longer carrying that child, playing with that child or fulfilling that purpose of being that Childs mom. Her HOPE during this time was ripped out. Isolation for grieving mothers has significant impacts. It does for those just struggling day-to-day, looking for normalcy during pandemic times, but grieving mothers suffer greatly. They have been stuck in homes, unable to get out and connect...see the world...distract their minds even with momentary normal things. Nothing is normal for mothers right now, but now amplify that for a grieving mother where the emotion of grief is new and the human body feels almost incapable of processing the pain. That is where we step in! The Finley Project was built for this. Since inception, we built our program for scalability and for use anywhere in the nation. We have built relationships with hospitals across the country and use a streamline online application process. We have developed online resources such as our private Facebook support page along with Support Volunteers who talk/text with their mothers weekly. We use counselors all over the country who have pivoted their practices to see our mothers Virtually. We have created Virtual monthly support groups and encouraged mothers to join Virtual Groups within their areas. We have provided Grocery Gift cards where jobs were lost and income was down. We have been ready for this. We are hearing it over and over from the mothers who have lost an infant during this PANDEMIC, that if they didnt have The FInley Project, they dont know where they would be. You all - THEY MEAN IT! It’s taken me a few days to articulate the overwhelming feeling of emotion I’ve felt from the number of messages I’ve had following my Podcast from a few days ago. In which I opened up about aspects of my life that I’ve only started to understand in self reflection stemming from my desire to strive to be the best version of myself that represents my values and traits. This isn’t about being perfect and self righteous or thinking I’ll never have moments or periods again where I’ll become a Pratt and wish I’d handled events differently! But the realisation that life is not always going to be easy and there are always lessons to learn from and improve. Using my podcast as platform to voice and acknowledge past events has been liberating and rewarding! My sincere thanks to everyone who took the time to message me and I am truly touched at some of the stories people have been kind enough to share and I consider that a privilege to be able to hear other people’s stories. April 18th, 1993 was the first time I ever saw Keith, it was the Brooklyn Banks contest. He had the brightest blonde hair and blasted over the wall off the banks curve with a flip trick. We became friends in 1995 in San Francisco when he was out there with the N.Y. dudes & I was out there with the D.C. dudes. East coasters out west. What an incredible nice guy. I remember being thrown off that he didn’t have the NY accent like his pals. When he started riding for @realskateboards and popping his ollies so solid and his shifty’s oh man, we were all such huge fans. But you loved him even more because he was so cool. He never ever once forgot me or tried to act like he didn’t know me after years and years went by. I would see him in the skate world every 5 years and we would pick up where we left off. I was so lucky in 2012 right before I left NYC again to go back to DC we stopped by the Brooklyn banks on a whim. Wow and who rolled up? Keith! The first place I saw you & the last place I saw you. I fell in love with the city in 2019 after spending three weeks here on tour. It has been a surreal experience living in a place that has become the epicenter of a national and global racial reckoning. Many of the events in the nationally-disseminated footage have taken place walking distance from my apartment. In addition to the attention we must give to Louisville for the police/law reform that needs desperately to be enacted, I wanted to document some of Louisville’s people, especially its working people. It is a surprisingly diverse city, yes, (Mayor Greg Fischer launched the somewhat dubious Compassionate Louisville campaign in 2011), but also a deeply segregated one. Economic disparity, the legacy of redlining and the project of gentrification are felt when you are here. I live in what the HOLC in the 1930s classified as a “C Third Grade neighborhood” in between two “D Fourth Grade neighborhoods”. On my block alone the political beliefs of residents span the entirety of the spectrum. As an outsider and non-native, I feel the well-intentioned, hard-working, hopeful and kind nature of most everyone I encounter here but I also feel a deep divide and a sense of misperception and misunderstanding.
