I thought I’d be too cool for this trending “reflection” until I realized it’s been a decade with this sailor cap I bought on a trip to France. & a decade with certain vices I picked up in Nice (cigarettes, wine) as well as hobbies (poetry, “French shit”). Plenty of other folks have flexed rhetoric re: lessons learned, mistakes made, we grow. So I’ll just say this: 2009 was epic. It was low, adventurous, difficult, strange - teen angst hit me hard and my college prospects suffered. Other folks are comfortable talking about mental health in Instagram captions, but you’ll read about my experiences in some ever-forthcoming memoir. 10 years ago I was a kid and a wild card; I still feel that way, wearing the same hat, but I’m in college! It took a decade to get back to the work I meant to do, and that decade has seen many hats, many homes, many turns. I’m not better or worse, I’m just a little better at steering the ship. Whatever symbolism I saw in this hat in an alley in the south of France persists: you’re the captain of your own ship. I’ve been off and on course for a decade, fared a storm or two or three, the consistencies can be empowering or hindering, but whatever shore you’re looking for...well screw the nautical analogy, I’m going to get a degree! Seemed impossible 10 years ago. That’s something I can celebrate, along with the fact I’ve never lost this damn hat. It’s been a symbolic ally this whole time. Whatever importance we ascribe to material goods - this is an artifact of independence and commitment. I don’t wear it as cheekily/often as I used to, but it’s become a sort of sacred object in my extensive collection of vintage clothing. I’ve never dared replace it. I was autonomous and curious on that first trip to France, and that was a highlight in 2009 that outshines the grim memories of that growth period. A year ago was the 4th time I’d ever been up on a stage and the 1st time I played a sold out show at Madison Square Garden. I walked around New York City alone that day looking up at all the buildings and thinking about how in the hell I got there in life. I had no clue what I was doing then. I had been writing music for other people for years and didn’t know if I was really allowed to do it for myself. But since then everything has changed. I got the courage to do what I love and realized I have something to say to the world. I found people who believed in me and left some others who didn’t behind. I started writing my life story into a collection of songs that now, a year later, is so so close to being ready for the world. I’m so grateful to Nick for giving me the opportunity to discover that. My heart hurts for how different things are now, stuck inside with everything burning around us. But if I can’t get back up on stage at least we can all have a million little concerts in our bedrooms, blasting music on laptop speakers and record players and shitty headphones and thinking about the day when we can all be back dancing to sad songs again. - @annikamusic on Instagram

TBT It feels like a million years ago and also feels like yesterday. It was 2002 at the original club XL. The legend Beto Sutter was still alive and had taken a chance on giving me a solo show. I was rotating Mondays with the epic likes of @jairodriguez @shobean @alyshaumphress @frenchiedavis @shaynasteele and their live bands. Jimmy Moyer was still alive and flawlessly running sound and lights. @tedarenas77 was a smiling cutie behind the bar. It was an electric time in New York City, particularly New York nightlife. If i wasn’t performing, i was there watching and learning. Monday’s meant XL for me no matter what. Social media didn’t exist, dating apps didn’t exist. People gathered to chat, have a drink and watch entertainment. It felt like a magical time because it was. It’s a vibe that can’t be replicated and we will never get it back. A band with Barbara Morgenstern, Nadine Finsterbusch and Ralph Tharayil welcomed us in the outer bailey, we listened to a talk about the impact of covid-19 on culture, politics, network and digitalization and enjoyed the poems of Greta Bellamacina and Robert Montgomery as well as the singing of the choir Die Untertanen. .
Afterwards the program began. In Double Feature #1 we literally walked through the novel Drehtür by Katja Lange-Müller. Accompanied by music from Barbara Morgenstern. .
In part 2 of the Double Feature with Till Wyler von Ballmoos and Stella Maria Adorf the participants found themselves in a gardening workshop inspired by Bärfuss novel Hundred Days. 
Continuum II showed the stories of transsexual sex workers in Colombia. It is about oppression, persecution and violence and overcoming the trauma of it. .
In the dark, the light installation by the artist Robert Montgomery was lit. When we are gone the trees will riot illuminates the castle park.
