#DWFnotillrotation Autumn, second year, third crop. Here’s our garlic patch. At this point in the rotation weed control has been relatively easy - mostly taking place before the garlic was planted. The straw mulch that we put on the cover crop is still thick. Before garlic there were tomatoes and eggplant, and before that was the cover crop. Most of the garlic went in the ground during the first week of April. At that time we were still harvesting tomatoes, for a short period, and eggplants until the first days of June, and meanwhile the garlic was growing beneath them. Las tortugas tardarán 2 meses en nacer y desde ocean52 buscamos voluntari@s que quieran custodiar (2 personas cada turno) el nido día y noche en tramos de 2h a partir del 1 de agosto. AVOCADOS VS ELEPHANTS:⠀ How an avocado farm could be the catalyst that leads to⠀ the demise of the Amboseli ecosystem⠀ ⠀ There had been no warning of what was to come. The bulldozers wasted no time, quickly laying waste to 180 acres of precious, very finite amount of wildlife habitat.⠀ ⠀ The reason? Avocados. ⠀ ⠀ The place? A community conservancy in the Kimana wildlife corridor, through which elephants and other animals move between Amboseli National Park and the Tsavo landscape. ⠀ ⠀ This farm was approved in an area that is fundamentally important to Amboseli’s wildlife populations, and is basically an invitation to developers to proceed with the destruction of Amboseli’s remaining natural habitats. This was an act far more consequential than any poacher pulling a trigger: the further loss of natural space to human activities.⠀ ⠀ Amboseli’s elephants are the basis for an ecotourism industry that supports thousands of jobs and generates tens of millions of dollars, all of this ultimately at risk for the sake of the foreign demand for avocados and other produce. All of which could be grown in any other number of other areas of Kenya without critical ecological value.⠀ ⠀ Local communities were the first to object to the farm, but the outcry spread quickly. Following input from a number of stakeholders, as well as evidence of the importance of this wildlife corridor, Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has since issued a letter of intent to revoke the farm’s license.⠀ ⠀ This is a huge show of commitment by the Kenyan government to protecting its natural resources, and Big Life thanks the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and NEMA, particularly the Cabinet Secretary and Director General.⠀ ⠀ However, the avocado farm’s owners have 10 days from September 18 to show cause as to why their license should not be revoked, and there may be a protracted legal battle ahead. ⠀ ⠀ Meanwhile, Big Life and others in the ecosystem applaud the choice that has been made, one for the continued survival of the unique, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that is the Amboseli ecoystem. ⠀ #amboseli #ecosystem - @biglifeafrica on Instagram

The new conservation destination on Church Street in East Harwich offers scenic vistas of a wildflower meadow in full bloom nestled within a forested valley that borders 1,400 feet of shoreline along Muddy Creek flowing into Pleasant Bay. More Milkvetch! The recently planted population of Ventura Marsh Milkvetch (Astragalus pycnostachyus var. lanosissimus) has done so well at NCOS that we’re adding more in an adjacent area. This is why I chose Young Living their Seed to seal program The results are in. I called 15 essential oil companies and asked if I could tour their farms to see how the essential oils are made. Here is a list of the company, phone number, and answer. 1. NOW essential oils: 888-669-3663, they do not grow their own plants. This either means that their “oils” are made in a lab or they buy plants from random farms. 2. Piping Rock Essential Oils: 1-800-544-1925, the representative told me no. She did not give me any explanation. 3. Aura Cacia essential oils: 1-844-550-7200, the rep said that they do not grow their own essential oils. She would not give me the names or numbers of the farms where they buy the plants. 4. AnimalEO: 320-286-3277, the mailbox was full. 😂 5. Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils: 800-879-3337. The rep said I cannot see the farms because their plants are sourced. She would not give me the name or numbers of the farms so I could ask them. 6. Edens Garden essential oils: 949-388-1999, the website said to not take the oils internally (Young Living has an entire line of vitality oils that are labeled to take internally). The rep said that she had never received a question like that before and asked to place me on hold. She returned to tell me that they do not own any of their own farms and that I cannot calls those farms. 7. OnePure essential oils: only available by email. They did not respond to my message. 8. Healing Solutions essential oils: 1-800-819-4098, the rep had to place me on hold. He returned to say that I cannot see the farms. He said that the company is not equipped for face-to-face consultations. 9. Gurunanda essential oils: 866-421-0309, the rep told me that they source their oils and that I cannot see the farms. 10. Plant Therapy essential oils: 800-917-6577, the rep told me that they do not own their own farms and I would not be able to take a tour to see the plants or oils be made. Desierto florido en casa Les comparto un trabajo emocionante que hicimos esta semana,nada menos que en la zona central aprovechando el avance del desierto a la Región Metropolitana, ubique por Google Earth un área de un posible potencial de floración. La exploración fue exitosa logrando ver paisajes coloridos impactantes tanto que la satisfacción fue enorme no importando la prohibición de viajar al desierto florido debido a la pandemia. Se encontraron varias especies del desierto florido que reconocerán en las fotos. Este lunes y martes haremos un scouting (exploración fotográfica) de 6 horas con un cupo máximo de 5 personas. Se tomaran todas las medidas para la seguridad de salud. Often the old methods are the best . . The Moors who ruled Andalucia for centuries were so skilled at their farming methods and their use of water. The Lecrin Valley is a landscape of terraced almonds and olives as a result . . This terracing means that when it rains (and when it rains in the valley, it RAINS!) the water doesn’t run straight off the hill, but forms build-ups along the terrace edges that soak into the earth, watering the trees around them. This system is further enhanced by the acequia system, which are networks of mountain irrigation channels (more on that soon!) . . As the almond orchard at our finca is on a natural sloping site we are looking into building up ‘terraces’ and using a permaculture swale system for the irrigation. Using the natural rainfall to irrigate the almonds will mean we will save water... such a precious commodity. And we won’t need ugly plastic pipes running all over the almond orchard! INYO COUNTY, CA, August 20, 2020 – On three separate days (July 24, August 18, and August 19) the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), U.S. Air Force National Guard Unit, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the California Department of Justice (DOJ) CAMP Team # 3 and 4 eradicated 42,306 illegal marijuana plants from three locations off public lands within Inyo County. Street value is estimated to be between $84,612,000 and $169,224,000. All agencies assisting in the eradication operation want to remind residents and visitors of the dangers that are inherent on illegal marijuana cultivation. If you become aware that you have come upon a cultivation site, leave immediately and do not attempt to engage with the growers. Once in a safe location, report as many details about the location to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office at 760-878-0383, option 4. Marijuana cultivation causes extreme damage to ecosystems. As part of the illegal cultivation process, growers are responsible for using miles of plastic tubing and diverting water from natural sources for crop irrigation. The use of banned herbicides and pesticides is also common practice. Additionally, marijuana cultivation sites often contain large amounts of trash and create fire hazards in wildland areas. Reclamation will be conducted through BLM and US Forest Service. Law enforcement officers continue to investigate the grow site. No arrests have been made at this time. - @inyosheriff on Instagram

One of the amazing things about the Coastal Sage Scrub plant community out at Cabrillo National Monument is the ever-changing species that are in bloom. One of the last plants to bloom in late summer are in the Baccharis family. Such is the case for the Coyote Brush (Baccharis pilularis) and Broom Baccharis (Baccharis sarothoides) as they begin their seasonal blooming. However, the Hybrid Desertbroom (Baccharis sarothroides x pilularis) is a mix of both species and one from this family currently blooming here at Cabrillo National Monument. The plant is dioecious, meaning the pistillate (female) flowers and the staminate (male) flowers are on separate plants. The blooms of the female flowers are long whitish green and after pollination create a fluffy tuft, or pappus containing the seed nutlet. This adaptation is designed for wind-dispersal of the seeds. The male plants have sterile female parts in their flower. The male flowers contain the yellow pollen, and some believe they have the scent of shaving soap. As you visit the park in the next few weeks you will here the buzz of pollinators as the collect some of the last nectar of the season, while pollinating this late bloomer to produce puffy clouds of seeds to be spread by the winter winds. #DWFnotillrotation Autumn, first year, first crop. We sowed this mixed species cover crop on April 15th. Mid autumn has proved great timing for it in this mild winter climate. The mix included: cereal rye, barley, oats, broad beans, daikon radish, linseed, crimson clover, chickpeas, fenugreek, snow peas, & wooly pod vetch. We will be harvesting snow peas and broad beans from this cover crop. Very inspired by research done by the soil scientist, Dr Christine Jones - check out her presentation on quorum sensing in the soil microbiome.
