The picture shows a US Marine flamethrower operator moving towards a Japanese pillbox on Motoyama Airfield, Iwo Jima, around February-March of 1945. - 🔷Flamethrower operator (WW2)🔶 - Well, here’s the time to talk about that tanky thing with a hose and a nozzle attached to that all of us have seen in movies or even videos games. That thing is “flamethrower”. The weapon itself was first invented and used by the Greeks in the 1st century AD with the idea of shooting flammable liquid ignited with fire. The weapon would be seen used again by the Germans during the First World War which was the first time that the weapon was modernized, invented and called “Der Flammenwerfer” or directly translated to “Flamethrower”. - It was seen widely used by militaries by both sides to clear trenches, buildings and fortifications, especially bunkers or pillboxes in World War 2. However, it was considered to be a cruel and inhumane weapon, being a weapon capable of burning and incinerating people alive. During World War 2, there were two types of flamethrower delivery system; one by motorized vehicles like tanks, half-tracks and the other was a man-portable version. The weapon was proven to be highly effective but at the same time dangerous to the operators as the weapon was actually a fuel tank being carried around on the battlefield. And the whole system of a flamethrower actually weighed more than the typical gear a soldier would carry which means that the flamethrower operators couldn’t move or run like other soldiers. The effective range of the flamethrower was also very low and the operators would have to come closer to the target, increasing the risk of being shot or captured. The flamethrower was also needed to be operated with the operator standing , making him more easier to be shot by enemies. The amount of fuel that a flamethrower could carry was also not that much so the operator had to burst-firing the flamethrower. - @war_history_picture on Instagram
