With a spike of 82,170 coronavirus cases and 1,039 deaths in 24 hours, Indias tally on Monday breached the 60 lakh-mark with a total of 60,74,702 cases. Out of these, 9,62,640 are currently active whereas the number of discharged cases stands at 50,16,520. While 95,542 lost the battle against the viral disease. On July 17, India had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh on August 7. The country added another 10 lakh on August 23 and went past 40 lakh on September 5. In 11 days, it added another 10 lakh cases, amounting to 50 lakh cases. Twelve days later the tally has mounted to 60 lakh. Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. Research that she hopes will ultimately lead to a reduction in bowel cancer. Zoe will work under the supervision of the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research, Professor Mark Molloy. The majority of funding comes from national charity Bowel Cancer Australia, which has committed $6.4 million to establish the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research and will be supported by additional funds of $4 million available to the University to advance research into bowel cancer. Com isso, a capital agora conta com 736 infectados. Destes, 402 ainda estão sob investigação epidemiológica. Ou seja, o resultado deu positivo, não precisou de internação e é tentado contato com o paciente, que está com alguma discrepância, como ter preenchido os dados incorretamente, por exemplo. . Ainda de acordo com o boletim, 22 mortes foram confirmados pela doença na capital. Do total de casos confirmados, 397 são mulheres e 339 são homens. Os maiores infectados, que correspondem 41%, estão na faixa etária de 20 a 39 anos. Logo em seguida, vem os pacientes que têm entre 40 a 59 anos, que somam 36% do total de infectados. . Os casos de investigações concluídas somam 334. Destes, 229 não necessitaram de internação e 105 tiveram que ficar internados. Com isso, 77 foram admitidos em hospitais privados e 28 na rede pública. 60% desses pacientes necessitaram de Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). O boletim destaca que 274 pessoas já foram curadas, apenas 13 continuam internadas e 25 estão em observação através do isolamento domiciliar. . Bairros com mais casos O Setor Bueno é o bairro com o maior número de casos em Goiânia: 73 confirmações. Em seguida vem o Setor Oeste com 57 e o Jardim Goiás com 25. Let’s talk about vaginismus! I’ve gotten so many messages recently on this. Unfortunately I cannot give advice on social media. However I would like to share some education! What is primary vaginismus? Primary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has never been achieved ever. So this means you have never been able to put in a tampon, have penetrative intercourse or digital penetration. What is secondary vaginismus? Secondary vaginismus is when vaginal penetration has happened before, but is no longer possible, potentially due to factors such as gynecologic surgery, abuse, trauma, menopause or radiation. When people have pain with intercourse this is called Dyspareunia- just the medical term for it. It is often confused with vaginismus. People can have painful intercourse for many reasons that are not vaginismus (like endometriosis). Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles which makes penetration difficult or impossible. Many people who have vaginismus often have a fear of vaginal penetration and decreased sexual desire related to penetration. Which is not surprising! My vaginismus patients are a motivated bunch seeking help! I am incredibly proud of my patients when they make progress with their treatment! Its daunting to work with a therapist, use dilators and suppositories and have injections to an area that is sensitive. To all the women struggling with vaginismus do not give up!! I see so much success so often! It’s truly amazing to see when women are able to have a sexually satisfying experience with or without penetration! (Which is key to remember that penetrative intercourse is not the only way to have sex.) You are not broken! #whyophthalmology My friend and colleague @vickichanmd invited me to share why I chose to specialize in eyes after medical school. The top two reasons were - I liked the outpatient setting (versus inpatient which means primarily hospital based work) and also the ability to do work and surgery abroad in underserved communities. After I finished training I did 3 service trips in Mexico and India. Those trips were extremely formative for me in my outlook as a physician and as a human being in general. I am very grateful to have had them as a young physician. Whenever I need a reality check, I think about the people that had literally traveled hundreds of miles for a surgery that is readily available for people in first world countries. Now, I enjoy ophthalmology because I have long term relationships with my patients. Once a patient of mine starts seeing me, unless they move, I am usually their eye doctor for many years to come. I am a people person and I really enjoy having that long term relationship with the patients I have the privilege to care for. I am not particularly in love with the anatomy of the eyeball or anything but I do think it’s pretty cool that such a small part of your body is so extremely important ! When the results for my COVID test came two days later, doctors were doubtful about my reaction. I told them not to worry since Im a doctor myself. I knew that I could handle whatever the situation might be. Thats when they revealed that I was COVID-19 positive. As soon as the news spread, many of our neighbours panicked. The city administration council put up posters outside our door. People clicked photos and shot videos of my house. They shared it with my name, address, and personal details on different WhatsApp groups. Since people love to gossip on WhatsApp, ugly stories about me started circulating in social media. Even the news media put out the wrong kinds of stories. Despite going straight to the hospital from the airport, I had to be the victim of social media hatred. I didnt even go home to collect my personal belongings to make sure that I didnt transmit the virus to anyone. Thankfully, I started recovering and, after a few days, tested negative. But the hounding didnt stop after I was back home. I knew that going back home will be an unpleasant experience. Therefore, to avoid attention from neighbours and media, I insisted on going home late at night. Not just me but my entire family had to experience the harassment. My younger brother didnt step out of the house for two months. Neither did I. I would only step out during the night to avoid people. When I step out, I can still sense the eerie stares and gossip. It is like a bad dream - Im all alone. People refuse to hear when I plead to them that I didnt do anything wrong. The only way we can fight this pandemic is with the right balance of precaution and empathy. Yes, we need to be careful. But we also shouldnt let our fears overpower humanity within us”. Här sitter jag i mitt rum och tänker på alla de som mist livet i covid-19. Det är så sjukt att jag dagligen får träffa patienter som jag tror kommer klara av infektionen men det visar sig vara tvärtom, de dör. Samtidigt får jag träffa de som förvånansvärt klarar av infektion trots multisjukhet. Denna pandemi har varit en ögonöppnare inte bara för mig utan för hela samhället, livet är skört. I allt elände finner jag ändå någon slags styrka för jag vet att jag gör skillnad. Jag ifrågasatte mitt yrkesval i början av pandemin men det slog mig sedan att detta är den största anledningen till att jag valde yrket, för jag får möjlighet att rädda liv. Finns det något mäktigare? Jag har sett människor sväva mellan liv och död, jag har lämnat dödsbesked till anhöriga, jag har tröstat ledsna anhöriga, jag har varit med vid glädjande besked och jag har funnits för en annan människa när den behövt mig som mest. Aldrig har jag varit med om så många dödsfall på så kort tid, ibland känns allt surrealistiskt. Försöker påminna mig själv att jag inte är en maskin, jag har känslor också och det är okej att må dåligt över det jag dagligen får handskas med. Det är okej att känna. Jag vill å andra sidan även lyfta fram de patienter som tillfrisknat och som kunnat komma hem, den känslan är fantastisk. Det betyder att jag tillsammans med mina kollegor möjliggjort detta. Man får inte glömma hur många liv man räddat, jag brinner för det jag gör och jag kommer aldrig svika mina patienter. This was a fun one 🤪😎🦷 This patient’s roommate had Invisalign treatment with me and kept seeing her teeth get straighter and straighter with relatively minimal fuss. At a certain point, he asked her to “put in a good word” 😂 and the result is 👆🏾 🚨 My post op photo was a bit average (got the white balance wrong, so the colour looks green 🤢😆) and in retrospect, I might’ve pushed a bit more to lengthen those anterior teeth a tiny bit more.
