Happy Birthday, William Faulkner! The man, the myth, the legend was born on this day in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. Shortly before his fifth birthday, the Falkner family relocated to Oxford, where he stayed for much of his life. The Nobel Prize-winning author is best known for his novels that took place in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which was modeled after Lafayette County, Mississippi. While his home in Oxford, Rowan Oak, is currently closed to the public, the grounds and nearby Bailey Woods Trail are open from dawn until dusk daily. #williamfaulkner #rowanoak #oxfordms #olemiss #onthisday #happybirthday #hbd @visitoxfordms @cityofoxfordms @olemiss - @ummuseum on Instagram

One of the greatest mind of all time! Nikola Tesla (1937)💕 Serbian-American engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) made dozens of breakthroughs in the production, transmission and application of electric power. He invented the first alternating current (AC) motor and developed AC generation and transmission technology. He also created the Tesla coil, which is still used in radio technology.😀 Tesla never really cared about money; what he wanted most was to provide free electricity to the world. However, such a project needed investors and, despite having found them, they eventually started to doubt his system. This led to bankruptcy and the tower he had built had to be sold in order to cover his debt. 😔 Tesla showed us that everything is possible when you try hard enough, his legacy lives on to this day, and we will be forever grateful to this beautiful mind. ❤️ My brain is only a receiver, in the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration. - #NikolaTesla . This past weekend we paid tribute to an amazing man, my Uncle Bill Milliken. Bill was one of the last truly great leaders and statesman to dedicate his life to serving the people of our great nation, and the State of Michigan. ...... Bill was governor of Michigan for 14 years, from 1969 to 1983, making him the longest serving governor in Michigan’s history. His political legacy lies most notably in advances in civil rights, women’s rights and environmental matters. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a statement said Milliken had a unique ability to bring people from both sides of the aisle together for the betterment of the state. “Gov. Milliken was a true statesman who led our state with integrity and honor,” Whitmer stated. “We are a stronger, safer, more sustainable state because of his leadership and dedication to the people who call it home. “I’ve always looked up to Gov. Milliken as a trusted, respected leader and I’m proud to have called him a friend of the family. I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Gov. Milliken’s family for their loss. May we all continue to learn from his lifetime of service as we work together to build a stronger Michigan for everyone. Milliken became politically active in the late 1940s as a moderate Republican, with his politics often being compared to those of George Romney and Nelson Rockefeller. Although conservative Republicans were often frustrated by Milliken’s positions, political opponents and supporters alike recall his gentlemanly nature and courteous behavior. “Governor Bill Milliken was one of the most amazing public servants I’ve ever worked with,” Sen. Debbie Stabenow said in a statement. “He set the bar for integrity, dedication, and kindness. His passion for Michigan and our Great Lakes was unsurpassed. I was honored to call him my friend.” ... He taught us how to fly. He led dead poets. He was the therapist we didn’t know we needed. He clowned around when we were down and was always there to patch things up. He made genies and magic feel real and he was probably our generations first exposure to cross dressing and lord was he fabulous. Every movie he starred in and every character he played during that golden age showed us how to show up fully, love passionately, to give second chances, to put family first and to fight to get through to people even when it seems like a lost cause. He was an brilliant actor and a hilarious comedian, but he was more than that. All he ever did was use his gifts to make the world a better place. Then a day came when the world was too much for him, and alone one cold morning he took his own life. Just like Anthony Bourdain, Chester Bennington, Avicii, and Chris Cornell, too many of the men who inspire us and light the way lose the will to live and struggle to find that light within themselves. In a world where it seems the very worst of men make decisions for the rest of us, I find myself increasingly focused on looking at human issues from the perspective of mental, emotional, and spiritual health. If even millionaires who have accomplished all of their dreams want to die, I can only imagine how many countless souls in the world are struggling to survive. There’s a quote I like that says ‘be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle that you know nothing about’ but I would take it one step further. Love fearlessly and courageously cause nothing in this life is promised. In a world that obsesses over looks and status and self protection, and from a generation that says “do less” I would challenge us to practice radical love, radical compassion, and radical patience for those around us. It’s been said that the smallest amount of love could change someone’s day, and perhaps now we can take that a step further and recognize that any act of love in this day and age could literally save a life. So here’s to one of the greatest of his generation and may we honor his memory by being messengers of those little acts love. - @dustinthomasxo on Instagram
