When I was eight years old, I entered a Qantas stamp design competition because first prize was a ride in the front seat of a four seater Cessna 172 and second prize was a seat behind the pilot. I wasn’t very artistic but I was determined to give it a go and I won second prize. Ever since then I wanted to sit in the pilot seat. So began a lifelong passion for all things aviation. I joined Qantas in 1984 on the 747 as one of the first female pilots. I used to get a few peculiar looks from passengers when they saw me walking in to the cockpit. Nowadays people don’t bat an eyelid. I’ve flown the 747 for the majority of my career and am so honoured to be flying our very last 747 to the US. When I step off that plane and say goodbye for the last time, some of that Mojave desert dust might get in my eye. 1st October marks an iconic day for the history of High Speed Rail. On this day, worlds first HSR (known as Shinkansen in Japan) began its operations between Tokyo & Osaka in Japan in 1964. Since its inception, Bullet Train has transformed the cities of Japan and their identities. A research report titled “30 Years of High-Speed Railways: Features and Economic and Social Effects of the Shinkansen” by Hiroshi Okada, estimates that the economic impact from the Shinkansen train network, based on the time saved from faster travel, is approximately ¥500 billion ($4.8 billion USD) per year. The train has helped in expanding mobility, pulling people from rural areas to urban areas. Businesses converged around the major stops as a growing emphasis on productivity swept across Japan. When people ask me where I live I tell them I am based in Toronto but I am bit of a gypsy ...and they often giggle thinking I’m being cute...then I explain. I have been wandering my whole life. Changed 10 schools growing up, I’ll let you do the math. Change is my constant. Since the pandemic, the world stopped spinning and my whole world changed. I’ve been back in Toronto since March 4 and by the middle of June I had already broken the record on how long I’ve stayed in one city for consecutively in OVER 15 years! 3 months is all it took! Yes, it’s been very different to be this still. Before the halt in travel I was scheduled to perform in 5 countries between March and August, at various festivals ...with over 50 shows from my tour still remaining... ...that was until the end of August. That’s as far as I’d gotten with my bookings. I wanted to wait and see where the next few months would take me. As it turns out...NOWHERE 😂🙄 Now, I’m entering uncharted territory. Not able to make any travel plans and no longer have reminders of all the canceled gigs, flights and Airbnb stays. Now I just have a blank calendar. So. Let’s see where we go with this. Not only was she the first woman to be hired as a Captain for American Airlines but she also recognized the challenges that came with joining what many considered a male profession, so founded the International Society of Women Airline Pilots so that other women in the industry had a place to support one another. She was the pilot of one of 38 aircraft diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11, and we talk to her about that experience, and her whole career as a bad-ass woman in aviation, on the latest episode of our podcast.
