Took the new car for a drive up the coast! Normally wouldn’t consider this a day trip, but I have nowhere to go and don’t drive daily anymore. I have to soak up that new car smell somehow! I started listening to the audiobook for “How to be an Antiracist” on the way home. Hasn’t gripped me as much as “White Fragility,” but it’s still a great listen. I get this question ALL the time... “How do you do it all?” First of all... nobody does it all. NOBODY. However, there are a few things I do keep in the back of my mind on a daily basis. 🙃 Planning: Obviously this is my first thing. I plan, I plan, and I plan again. I review my calendar, I rewrite my daily schedule, and I try to pinpoint where things might go wrong and how I can work around that. 😠 Stay out of victim mindset as much as possible: This isn’t always easy, and sometimes I just need a good cry. But I don’t sit in that mindset for too long. That’s not good for anyone... who does that serve? 💪 Doing the hard things, especially when I don’t want: There will always be hard times, hard things, and things we don’t want to do. But most of the time, you just need to stop complaining and DO IT! ☀️ Taking care of myself: As the saying goes... you can’t pour from an empty pitcher. Nobody can do it all, and we shouldn’t have to. Free Article: Farm From Scratch Starting a farm is a difficult and life-consuming task. It’s more than an occupation. It’s a lifestyle, it requires constant attention, focus, endurance, and perseverance. Starting a farm from scratch goes a step further, it requires the expense, uncertainty, necessary mistakes, and sacrifice of building up a working farm, but without the land, equipment, or generational knowledge embedded in an inherited farm. Land, buildings, tools, equipment, animals, and perhaps most importantly, intimate knowledge of the land all need to be acquired. Five years ago, we left the city and embarked on a journey to build up a working farm from scratch that we hope to pass down to the next generations. On a shoestring budget, we’ve built a timber-framed home from the land’s trees, fixed up a dilapidated barn, built up a herd of cattle, a flock of sheep, a mess of hogs and chickens, built fences, run water lines, built up a market for our pastured meats, cleared acres of overgrown woodlands, taken 40 acres out of conventional cropland, planted native prairies and perennial pastures, and planted thousands of fruit, nut, and pine trees. We now support our family with a modest farm income and, more importantly, get to live an incredibly rich and rewarding lifestyle doing exactly what we love most. 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘸𝘢𝘺 - an ongoing study of landscape and time along the interstates connecting Sin City and the City of Angeles. Interstate 15 traverses the heart of the Mojave, and for the better part of the past year and a half, I’ve made the drive countless times. The beautiful but unforgiving landscape of the high desert can be borrowed but never truly possessed, evident by the many structures of a past time, imminently damned to ruin. On the open road here, time tends to feel both sped up and terribly slow and between every trip I make, things change - sometimes rather drastically. Admittedly I didn’t start thinking of this as a cohesive ongoing project until more recently and truthfully, it started out of necessity to keep my commute interesting. For me, the run can be occasionally excruciating while other times I find solace in the terrain and palette. Depending on time of day and time of year, daylight plays off of each subject drastically different. I’ve made the trip early and late and every hour in between - sometimes by choice, sometimes out of obligation. UPDATE ON EHS RELAUNCH PLAN With Alberta now in stage one of the relaunch plan, we wanted to provide an update on when you can expect EHS to relaunch more of our programs and services. During this time, it is vital that we continue to keep our staff healthy so that we can be here for the animals. This is why we will be taking a thoughtful and measured approach to our staged relaunch, with staff health and safety, animal welfare, and community health guiding every decision. Our relaunch stages will be coordinated in line with the Government of Alberta’s strategy, and you can expect to see changes in our programs and services beginning approximately two weeks after each new provincial stage is reached. This will give us the necessary time to ensure we have the staffing, equipment, policies, procedures and training in place to optimally serve both people and pets while adhering to our guiding principles. This means we will be entering our own stage one for the beginning of June. This will include re-opening our adoptions through a modified, appointment-based process and launching other services virtually. We will continue to limit the access to our shelter, again in an effort to keep our staff and the community healthy. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we move through these stages with care so that we can ensure we remain here for the animals. Your support makes our work possible, and it will be more important than ever as the lasting impacts of COVID-19 on people and pets are realized. We have roots in South Carolina/Virginia and brought to the west our love of hospitality, gatherings, and intentional times for slowing down and stretching moments, much like our southern accents that draw out words and add syllables. We have always had a love for the west and in particular Montana, so the opportunity to resettle here several years ago was a dream come true. Our girls were homeschooled and we hope to be a source of encouragement to those in the homeschool community. Our home has always been a place of learning, homemaking, love, laughter,and dedicated work - a spot for family and friends to gather - a haven for recharge. We love gardening, smaller scale farming, chickens, bees, horses, dogs, cats, goats, and cattle. We are suckers for fresh flowers. And, our love for fellowship and gathering together fuels our passion for hospitality. . Blue Haven is a work in progress, just like we all are on this journey of sanctification. We finally got the chance to go out to the Hamilton pool today and it did NOT disappoint! This was on our bucketlist for Austin and almost two years later we made it! For those of you that don’t know what this is, it’s a natural water hole formed from a cave that opened up. The waterfall creates the calmest sound, the caves offered some much needed shade from the 101 sunny degree day and you have to hike about 1/4 a mile to get to this through scenic desert in the hill country! What is happening with time and COVID-19? I feel more sad and nostalgic and crazy in love with these two every single day. Like, their lives are so tender and precious and I love them so much and then I simultaneously feel panicked that I don’t actually have THAT much time with them before they launch. And yet still I am so tired and exhausted by this 24/7 mama and working full-time thing that I feel like I cannot help take it for granted. It’s like I KNOW how much I will miss this time with them and it is likely the happiest days of my life...but I am also fighting feeling impatient and frustrated all day long. Gah! This is hard and overwhelming and feels amplified.
