Dry dock workers and volunteers are seen taking photographs and admiring the gigantic USS Missouri while she lies in Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in January of 2010. At the time, she had been undergoing a 3-month long overhaul that included the addition of a new coat of paint, and an anti-corrosion system, among other small details. August 30, 1943. A special day at Portsmouth Navy Yard as two brand new fleet boats are prepared for launching on the same morning. Balao-class boats USS BANG(SS-385) and USS PILOTFISH(SS-386). USS BANG would be credited by JANAC with 8 ships sunk for 20,181 tons. She would be transferred to Spain in 1972, and scrapped in 1983 after a long career. USS PILOTFISH wouldnt be credited with any sinkings in her five war patrols, however, she did perform life guard duty on many occasions, performing well in this capacity. She would hold the distinction of participating in the official surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. This was probably the height of PILOTFISHs career. She just never seemed able to pick up the scent trail of a target worth a torpedo. Herself would be deemed a target worth an atomic bomb in 1946, serving as a target for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. On 17 September in 1935, the #Junkers Ju 87 Stuka took to the (German) skies for the first time. It was to become one of the most feared aircraft in history. Even if you believe you have never heard of the Stuka, you will have ‘heard the Stuka’. Think of the sound of an aircraft going in a steep dive, from a low-pitch wail to a high-pitch screech … that sound is derived of that of Stuka. The Stuka was equipped with two little propellers, named the Trumpets of Jericho, attached to its landing gear, producing its typical sound which terrified those unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end. Stuka is short for ‘Sturzkampfflugzeug’ which translates into dive bomber. This concept was championed by First World War second-highest scoring German ace Ernst #Udet who helped rebuild the German Luftwaffe (air force). The advantage of dive bombing is that a bomb could be delivered accurately as the aircraft dived directly toward the target. It also fitted perfectly within the German tactic of #Blitzkrieg which was essentially a close cooperation between the different arms, including air support. As such, the Stuka took on the role of mobile artillery, able to attack targets deep behind enemy lines. The Ju 87 was the only dive bomber during the Second World War which was capable of diving at a vertical, 90-degree angle. For this the Stuka was built very sturdy and equipped with dive brakes which allowed it to keep its speed low while diving. The pilot had an excellent view on the target but required nerves of steel. He would dive directly toward the target and press the button on the top of his control column. As the bomb would have hit the propeller, it was first thrown clear via a catapult cradle. As soon as the bomb was released, the pull out would commence automatically. The autopilot was important as the pilot might black out due to the G-forces induced by the sharp pull out. Once the bomber was horizontal again, the pilot would regain vision, turn the #autopilot off and regain control of the aircraft. Nerves of steel, indeed. Actually, I wanted to let the FWT topic rest for a moment, but ©Matt Cawby from Paineairport.com came up with these nice close ups from WH006 N779PV (future A6-EZD)! If you swipe, you can see the safety locks were talked about a few days ago. And it was like this: as soon as storms of over 85kts threaten while the aircraft is at the gate/apron, its recommended to use a safety locking device in the folded state or lowering the FWT with optional clamps - to protect the FWT. Here you can see the lock that is mounted in the folded state. In that case it was installed because of long-term storage will follow until 2022 and therefore no hydraulic pressure + locking function holds the wingtip. The lock is first guided through the wingtip sockets with the devices own bolts and then mounted on the center bracket that is firmly attached to the underside wing structure (wingspar). The wingtip can no longer fold down, otherwise it will press on the bracket, which in turn sits on the underside of the wing.
