In celebration of #WorldOceansDay, I finally share with you what I’ve researched for 2.5 years. @sea_warden is an open-source framework for detecting and monitoring marine #aquaculture activity at scale. Fishing has stagnated and aquaculture now produces half of all seafood. In developing SW, satellite observations detected 235 fish farms consisting of 6,000+ net pens in Greece. It is my hope that consistent monitoring will provide scientists and policy makers the data needed to sustainably manage this industry. The SW team plans to map the entire Mediterranean by end of this month as our next step towards the global monitoring of marine aquaculture. #dyatica_edu - @dyatica on Instagram

The little-known Emakwezini Formation (Adelaide Subgroup, Beaufort Group, Karoo Supergroup) crops out in a narrow strip just inland of the eastern coast of South Africa in northern KwaZulu-Natal. It is an actively mined coal-bearing succession characterised by fining-upward successions of coarse- to fine-grained sandstones together with mudstones containing a fossil assemblage of animal traces, insects, molluscs, arthropods, fish and plants. Only Glossopteris leaves and Phyllotheca australis had been described from this formation, on the basis of a few very small, scattered and poorly provenanced collections. Regional-scale sedimentary facies analysis together with palaeobotanical studies of a well-preserved and diverse palaeoflora from the Emakwezini Formation, have permitted a more detailed interpretation of the depositional environment. Previous investigations also reveals the first evidence of the plant fossils Dictyopteridium flabellatum, Rigbya arberioides, Lidgettonia spp., and Trizygia speciosa in the upper parts of the Emakwezini Formation, strongly supporting a Late Permian age based on correlation floras from Upper Permian units in the main Karoo Basin. The lower unit showed the presence of a new flora including both the glossopterid fructification Ottokaria sp. (only known from the L Permian in SA) and Schizoneura gondwanensis (typical of the U Permian in SA). With sediments sourced from a north-easterly continental interior, the Emakwezini Formation was deposited rapidly in a fluviolacustrine setting under moist conditions capable of supporting an abundant and diverse biota. The permanently moist environment in which the Emakwezini Formation was deposited contrasts with that of the time-equivalent lower Beaufort Group units in the main Karoo Basin where environmental indicators suggest deltaic, lacustrine and meandering fluvial systems developed in a seasonally dry and more arid setting.Thus, within southern Africa, during the Middle to Late Permian, the environmental conditions, including climate, were varied leading to a mosaic of continental depositional settings. On this day in 1956, the decision was made to dissolve Black Mountain College, following several years of failing finances. That Fall, remaining faculty in residence Charles Olson and Wes Huss put into place plans to close the physical campus. Anticipating closure, Olson had proposed a dispersed university (illustrated here). By the following fall, Black Mountain College would formally close and Olsons plans would take a less formal, but equally impactful trajectory. This notion of a dispersed university is one that we look back to often. Many might think that our museum grew out of an endowment from the original Black Mountain College and that we follow a linear path back to the school itself. In fact, our history and our mission are much more in line with this dispersed model. 36 years stook between the closure of BMC and our founding. But the history of Black Mountain didnt remain stagnant in that time. Those who make up the BMC legacy continued their work across the globe, carrying the lessons they learned with them and building upon friendships and collaborations. In those intervening years, this legacy continued to grow. When we were established in 1993, we set forth with a mission to keep this ever-evolving spirit alive, not to revive a spirit that had been lost. This may not mean much to most people, but to my Captain/Friend Brown and I, it was our life at stake. Last Friday(6/26/20) at about 4:30pm we took off from Haiti headed back to Miami. We were happy because it was normal Friday and the weekend was about to start and then it happened. Climbing out of 9,000 feet just passing over the mountains of Haiti our right engine completely shut off on us. I’m not going to go into details because many may not completely understand. After quickly assessing the situation and two attempts to restart the right engine, we decided to completely shut down the engine, declared an emergency and decided to go back to Haiti...There is so much I could say but I’d really just like to thank God. A 3,000 year old Egyptian mummy foot with a prosthetic big toe. Made from wood and leather, it is one of the oldest prosthesis to ever be discovered. The foot with the amputated toe belonged to a woman who was approximately 50 to 60 years of age when she died. The prosthetic toe was designed with a nail divot, which likely signifies that aesthetic was an important factor in wearing it, especially since Ancient Egyptians often wore sandals. The prosthetic also helped the woman with her balance when she walked. According to Andrea Loprieno-Gnirs of the University of Basel: “By using a sophisticated way of fixing the individual parts of the prosthesis to each other, the artificial limb had a balancing effect and gave, to some extent, a freedom of movement. “Based on our scientific examinations, our team was able to verify at least four materials used for manufacturing the prosthetic device. Seasick crew member. Heavy smoke and ash from Oregon fires.. Electrical charging issues being addressed. Burning more diesel than we planned. Motored 90% since Labor Day. None the less... Promising days ahead. Anticipate we sail into the Bay Area under the Golden Gate on Sunday. Family and friends coming to meet us. That gives us some encouragement. Shorter passages and friendly sails ahead. In summary theres a reason theres not a lot of sailors north of San Francisco on the left coast. This has been the biggest challenge weve undertaken in quite some time. Weve learned, accomplished and overcome. Its been worth the journey. A fleet of well over 200 Chinese fishing vessels have been stationed in the waters just off the Galapagos for a number of weeks now. However, what is currently being witnessed is not a new phenomenon. Similar fleets, although often not as large, have visited the Galapagos in the past. Although the fleet is legally, and officially, targeting squid and tuna in international waters, there are undoubtedly, and possibly intentionally, going to be huge numbers of other bycatch species effected. One of the fleets mother-ships was found to have hundreds of tonnes of illegally caught sharks on board in 2017. Recently, the Chinese government have announced it will start a three month fishing ban in the region...but not until September... Pensiero del giorno Da decenni la linea di chi governa in Italia è quella di procrastinare i problemi invece di risolverli. I problemi economici si sono procrastinati nel fare più debito. Le riforme sono state trasformate in sussidi per evitare le riforme. Anche con l’emergenza sanitaria il problema è non avere abbastanza terapie intensive, ma in questi mesi si è fatto di tutto tranne che potenziare le terapie intensive. Questo procrastinare come il lievito madre ha fatto ingigantire i problemi rendendoli talmente diffusi da far diventare l’Italia la terra dei problemi. Considerando i problemi uno stimolo per l’intelligenza e il sale della vita, paradossalmente il fatto di fuggire dai problemi ha reso l’Italia il luogo più interessante dove vivere. Éstos corresponden principalmente a la extremidad anterior superior (húmero distal y radioulna), un cuarto carpiano y fragmentos de tibia, los cuales son comparables con los géneros Palaeolama y Hemiauchenia. Siendo estos camélidos extintos, posiblemente, los que precedieron a los actuales, donde se incluyen los guanacos. La prueba de carbono 14 a sedimentos orgánicos de la capa de arcilla y grava en la que estaban encapsulados, arrojó 13.600 años de antigüedad. Periodo que corresponde al fin de la úlltima era glacial. en la que grupos de humanos cazadores recolectores se dispersaban por América. Y aunque estos restos no presentan evidencia de intervención humana, si permiten conocer la ecología de los pastizales costeros donde habitaron los paleoindios, y donde probablemente cazaron paleocamélidos. Tiger Shark season is definitely picking up! Our morning tours got super lucky with three different tigers! We initially thought one of them was Tank but turns out after some inspection it was actually #sharkidmoana 💙🦈 this lovely lady is a long time fav of the team and it looks like her dorsal has some new love bites. We can use the comparison of watermarks on her pectorals to confirm it is indeed Moana and we will update our records with the most recent images! Tschlin Facade Reimaginations — 21.8. 4pm (CH) 🏕🇨🇭🦖— the peak of our Swiss design residency @somalgors74 ends with a festive launch of augmented sgraffito & video game accompanied with live performance. Searching for local visual language from almost forgotten valley of Engadin 🇨🇭🦖🦖🇨🇭led us to turn the community house inside-out. Architectural elements became symbols and building blocks of an online videogame. Week 11 of MappingAtoZ: Kevo, Finland 🇫🇮 There hasn’t been an easier letter to pick a place for than K... Kevo Research Station Now this may seem like a pretty random choice to most, but for the few who have had the chance to visit know it’s magic. For me, Kevo was a place for research, albeit amateur. It was the study area of my undergrad dissertation. Spending a couple of weeks trudging though 4ft of snow, collecting data on the snow pack and the environment over, certainly left me with a lot of memories. I wasn’t sure how to represent this unique arctic environment, the map I settled on was ‘My Journey’ across this valley. Over seven days I spanned the valley collecting data at 65 locations, these are my transects and their elevation profiles between the 6th and 12th March 2016. I tried to work on some styling here that shows the routes fading into the white snowy hilltops and cutting over the icy lake surface. Quando nel Lazio vivevano i rinoceronti In occasione della giornata mondiale del Rinoceronte vi presentiamo uno dei reperti fossili della nostra collezione faunistica. Questa mandibola di Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, detto anche rinoceronte dal naso stretto o delle steppe, proviene dal sito di Sora - Valle Radice (Frosinone). Lo stato di conservazione delle ossa non ha consentito la datazione diretta dei reperti, ma si ritiene che risalgano a circa 70.000-60.000 anni fa. In questo ricco giacimento fossilifero il rinoceronte era associato a molte altre specie di animali come pure ad alcuni strumenti litici del Paleolitico medio. Questa specie di rinoceronte, diffusa in tutta Europa, è scomparsa dalla nostra penisola circa 41.000 anni fa. When Rhinos were roaming in Latium For the World Rhino Day, we present one of the fossil specimens of our faunal collection. This mandible of Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, known also as narrow nosed rhino or steppe rhino, was discovered at the site of Sora - Valle Radice (Frosinone, Latium). The state of preservation of the bones did not allow direct dating of the specimens, but they are probably about 70,000-60,000 years old. In this rich fossiliferous site, the rhino was associated to many other animal species as well as to some Middle Paleolithic stone tools. El inicio de la hazaña: A 52 años de la publicación en Science del sitio arqueológico Tagua Tagua 1. La laguna ya había sido desecada hace un poco más de 100 años, y los campos de cultivo abundaban en el paisaje de San Vicente de Tagua Tagua, durante 1967. Aquí, los vecinos reportaron hallazgos de huesos enormes y extraños, distintos a los del ganado que tan bien conocían. Estos restos motivaron el envío de una expedición científica, desde el Museo de Historia Natural de Chile, a investigar el sector y los eventuales restos paleontológicos que afloraba de lo que una vez fue una colosal laguna, que albergó un rico ecosistema desde hace milenios. Cuando el arqueólogo Julio Montané dió con los primeros hallazgos en su excavación de 120 metros cuadrados, la sorpresa no fue menor, al momento de que surgieron de la tierra huesos de mastodonte (hoy en día llamado Gonfoterio), como mandíbulas, cráneos, pelvis y huesos largos. También otros animales fabulosos fueron recuperados, como el caballo americano (Género Hippidion), ciervo (Género Antifer), cánido (Familia Canidae), y una abundante cantidad de huesos de aves, anfibios, peces, roedores y marsupial. Pero las maravillas no acabaron allí. Entre medio de este conjunto de fauna que habitó aquel tiempo llamado Pleistoceno, hace aproximadamente 13.000 años antes del presente, había presencia de carbones y herramientas de piedra hecha por las bandas de cazadores-recolectores más antiguas en el registro arqueológico de Chile central. ¡La evidencia hablaba por sí misma!. El ensamble faunístico ya por sí era una maravilla de valor incalculable, pero ahora que habían artefactos líticos asociados a fauna intervenida por seres humanos (huesos de caballo cortados, gonfoterios acumulados y machacados), Tagua Tagua entraba a la inmortalidad con este fantástico sitio: Tagua Tagua 1. Montané publicó sus hallazgos en una de las revistas científicas mejor valoradas de todo el mundo: Science magazine, realizando la hazaña de ser el primer chileno en publicar algo de tal magnitud, que la revista internacional se encargó de masificar al mundo entero. - @nucleotaguatagua on Instagram
Cambios del Glaciar Universidad, San Fernando, región de OHiggins, Chile. El Gl. Universidad es uno de los glaciares más extensos de Chile central, alcanzando ~28 km2 y ~10 km de largo. Su nombre fue colocado por el glaciólogo francés Louis Libroutry en honor a la Universidad de Chile. Dicha casa de estudios alojó a Lliboutry y le brindó las facilidades para desarrollar estudios de glaciares a lo largo de Chile. Lliboutry es conocido como uno de los padres de la glaciología moderna. Además escribió uno de los primeros tratados de glaciología titulado nieve y glaciares de Chile (1956). En la parte superior de la imagen está el glaciar Universidad en el 2016. La imagen es de Google Earth. En la parte inferior está la fotografía más antigua del glaciar hasta ahora conocida. Esa fotografía fue tomada por la fuerza aérea de los Estados Unidos en el invierno chileno de 1944. Las puntas de flecha de colores marcan puntos se referencia en las imágenes para así dimensionar los cambios en el hielo en el tiempo. También por el valle del Gl. Universidad bajo parte del equipo de rugbistas uruguayos que cayó en la cordillera en 1972. Tengo la suerte de que el Gl. Hola a todos! Para hoy les traemos algunos fósiles muy especiales que aparecen en nuestro trabajo publicado en la revista Quaternary Sciences Reviews. Los fósiles en la localidad Laguna de Tagua Tagua no solamente nos permiten conocer la diversidad de fauna que existió hace aproximadamente 13000 años. Agunos de los huesos presentan marcas de cortes hechos por los humanos que habitaron en la laguna a fines del Pleistoceno, posiblemente mediante el uso de herramientas de piedra. Este tipo de evidencia sugiere que aquellos humanos probablemente cazaron y se alimentaron de parte de la Fauna que vivió en la Laguna de Tagua Tagua en aquellos lejanos tiempos. En la foto se muestran algunos de aquellos huesos. En A se presenta una fragmento de un hueso largo de un ciervo con marcas de impacto por un objeto contundente. En B, C y D podemos ver un astrágalo (hueso del tobillo) del caballo extinto Hippidion principale, un fragmento de rama mandibular de un ciervo y un calcáneo (otro hueso del tobillo) de Hippidion principale respectivamente, todos con marcas de corte. #nucleotaguatagua #NITT - @nucleotaguatagua on Instagram
