Ive been reading a lot about permaculture when whats happening in our country gets too overwhelming. Its all about creating closed systems, for food, waste, energy, community, you name it. Yesterday I inoculated two logs with oyster mushroom spores and hopefully in 2-6 months well have some to eat. We have a shady part of the yard where not even ground cover grows, and this seemed like the best use of that land. Well be inoculating more in the fall. Were steering toward growing more of our own food in an effort to remove our money from an exploitative & wasteful agricultural industry. Not talking about small farms, theyre literally part of my family. Im talking about those big thousands of acre monoculture farms that let food rot in the field because theyre cant find workers willing to pick crops for pennies. 🚨Proud dietitian alert! 🚨 This picture was sent to me by one of my clients. (Approved by her to be shared on IG) First, I laughed so hard. I love a good “fuck you” to diet culture. Then, I thought about how far this client has come in her recovery and how proud it makes me everyday that she continues to be a strong, hilarious, powerful woman! Diet culture and eating disorders are life thieves. They steal away precious brain space and take you from the present moment. Diet culture shames your ‘here and now’ body telling you that you aren’t good enough and until you change you don’t deserve love, respect, etc. Well, it’s bullshit!! You deserve love, respect, happiness, adventure, experiences, silliness, and whatever YOU want. Nothing has to change for you to deserve those things. Diet culture is a multi billion dollar industry that thrives off of its consumers thinking they are not “good enough”. Think of it this way...why would a huge industry want its consumers to trust their hunger/fullness cues? Why would they want you to love your ‘here and now’ body? Why would they want you to enjoy the foods you love without guilt/shame? The answer is...they don’t! Diet culture loves that you doubt your own internal cues, dislike your body, and feel guilt about eating donuts (or insert favorite foods here). I’m glad I get to work with wonderful clients, clinicians, and co-workers who continue to push back against diet culture.
