I’m still screaming Happy Birthday to my #AuntieMommy @mspattilabelle This is 75!! She loves on me like a mom, we fight like sisters, she spoils me like an auntie and we talk late into the night and share secrets like besties. I was raised in a village of strong black women and she’s the last (wo)man standing. How she endured the loss of all the siblings she grew up with (back to back) as well as her parents AND her besties with grace and strength, I will never understand but will always respect! Not to mention the fact that she sang at her mother and sisters funerals...who does that?!?!! Patti Patti, that’s who!! This is the first group of people I knew and grew close to as a brand new New Yorker and a Broadway baby. A blessing and a curse that the corona virus hysteria brought us much closer. Being thousands of miles away from my family and loved ones makes this whole move a lot harder, but I’m glad I’m literally not alone in this city anymore. I cannot believe it’s been 2 years since the world lost J Gold. He was iconic. He was LA. He was gold.💛In case u don’t know the story behind this illustration /print, here it is...I had just judged the @kcrwgoodfood pie contest with him a few months before and I psyched myself up to go introduce myself to him at the very end (there are a lot of judges and our categories didn’t overlap)and it went better than I imagined. When I started to explain who I was, he cut me off and said he already knew, had a tote bag I designed for KCRW and that he liked my art (say whaaaat?!)😱. He complimented me on a passion project I did the year before, where I illustrated highlights from episodes of Good Food, but then he gave me this kinda sad, pouty face and said he noticed that his restaurant reviews weren’t included in any of the illustrations. OOPS! That WAS true, but like, there were more timeless things to illustrate each week than a restaurant review. He said “I get it” but he was still kinda waiting to see me draw something he said on air. I excitedly and immediately promised him that I’d draw him something special and it’d be cool! He acted like that would make up for it and said he’d like that. Then I asked for a photo and made a joke about wishing I had on suspenders, to pull out and snap for the photo. He didn’t skip a beat and said I could pull his out for the photo, if I wanted. 😂 I was into it (swipe to see the photo)! When I heard the news of his passing I thought of what I promised him, then spent the next day going through episodes of Good Food from 2017 and listened to ALL his reviews. I pulled out the lines I thought he’d like and created this tribute illustration. I hate that I didn’t get to make this before, so he could see it and hopefully be stoked, but better late than never. And this wasn’t gonna be a print until all of you on IG asked for it because you wanted a little piece of him in your homes. So thank you, that means a lot. Throw back to when the Market Theatre main theatre was renamed in honor of Dr. John Kani. The largest of the three venues in the Market Theatre complex honours multi-award winning actor, director and playwright John Kani. During his illustrious career, both locally and internationally, John Kani’s success against many odds epitomises the spirit of the Market Theatre. During the apartheid era, Kani was harassed by police, detained and even stabled several times but his artistic voice continued to soar with stories that mirrored the pain but which at the same time inspired hope. Hailing from New Brighton, in the Eastern Cape, John Kani cut his teeth in theatre when he was still at school and with the Serpent Players where he worked alongside Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona. This collaborative relationship resulted in the internationally acclaimed productions Sizwe Banzi is Dead (1972) and The Island (1973) which in 1975, earned Kani and Ntshona the joint-recognition in New York with the Tony Award for Best Actor. John Kani’s long trail of accolades includes an Obie award (2003) in the US which acknowledged his contribution to theatre; and back home in South Africa in 2005, the South African government bestowed the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver on Kani in recognition of his contribution to theatre and the struggle for a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa. Kani also received the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation Award (2000) and the Olive Schreiner Prize (2005). In 2006, Kani was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Cape Town. One of John Kani’s greatest legacies is the Market Theatre Laboratory which he co-founded with Barney Simon to give young actors a firm grounding in theatre training. today marks day two of the womxn run the vote virtual relay race from atlanta to d.c., and we have officially virtually arrived in south carolina. . i got my miles on an urban hike downtown this morning, which came as a welcomed change of pace that got me thinking about a suffragette i had the privilege to speak about at the inaugural womens march here in denver three years back (first pic). . that suffragettes name is sojourner truth (second pic). . sojourner truth was born enslaved in 1797 and escaped to freedom in 1826. she was an evangelist, abolitionist, and womens rights activist who parted ideological ways with the abolitionist frederick douglass because he believed black men should have the vote before extending that right to black women. . whenever i got on my soapbox as a kid and told my brother how badly i thought he was messing up, which in my opinion was often back then, hed say why you got to get all sojourner truth on my ass? apparently i was very a serious kid. . sojourner truth is also widely known for having addressed a hostile audience of whites by repeatedly saying aint i a woman. that statement was believed to be part of an impassioned appeal for justice. but, as history tells us, she didnt actually utter those words. . turns out, someone else figuratively put those words into sojourners mouth in service to their own agenda more than twelve years later, and its been widely held as gospel in the years since. . imagine how many stories weve believed - not to mention the ones we internalize - without ever examining them. . today also marks the first day of autumn, as well as national voter registration day. theres a lot going on, folks. its a good thing im a runner. not sure how id keep up otherwise. . #vote #womxnrunthevote #blackvotesmatter - @kristepeoples on Instagram

Mnie to przychodzi dużo łatwiej bo z natury jestem pajacem, Urszulę muszę trochę rozkręcać w temacie więc wysyłam jej głupie selfie podczas ważnych zebrań albo zdjęcia jesiennych kozaczków na firmową skrzynkę. Mam ją w wpisaną w telefon pod hasłem Ula Bula i to mi zawsze poprawia humor kiedy dzwoni a ja z kolei jej poprawiam bo jestem u niej Ania Bania. Mamy też codzienną selekcję memów na rodzinnym whatsupie i nawet każdy trochę się doktoryzował z konkretnego zakresu bo ojciec to bardziej politycznie a Ula raczej z obrazków o życiu jako takim. Ja robię screeny z memów @who_killed_bambi i udaję, że to moje a mama tarza się ze śmiechu zupełnie za frajer bo sama nic nie wyszukuje. Tak czy siak mili Państwo trzeba sobie robić śmiechostki i my jesteśmy o tym przekonane bo inaczej rzeczywistość przytłacza, szczególnie podczas dużych projektów. Ktoś nam ostatnio sprawił duży komplement mówiąc, że to nasze firmowe zaplecze jest dziwne- wszyscy totalnie w skupieniu, efektywnie robią swoją robotę na maksa ale do szesnastej i na luźnej gumce. Absolutnie nam to pasuje i nawet ostatnio chciałyśmy przekazać jednym miłym klientom z Czech, że przyjedziemy odwiedzić i wyszło mniej więcej tak „właścicielka przyjedzie do Was na volnèm elastickèm pàsku.” No i czy nie pięknie? I didn’t realize my family wasn’t the norm until I was in my late teens. We are all super (annoyingly) close, we love, like and respect each other and always want to be around each other. It’s simply because of the foundation my dad and mom laid. My daddy loved his wife and showed it in every way; he always let it be known that she was/is a prize! the EIGHT of us felt that love and it became our way of life. Daddy won’t eat dinner until his wife was home, he couldn’t function if she traveled - even to the point of sniffing her clothes 🙈. They talked about EVERYTHING, even secrets they promised us they won’t tell the other. We ate every meal (possible) as a family, we talked, shared our days, our plans and LAUGHED together! When daddy went to bed, mommy followed and vice versa. They were a unit; we are a unit! Daddy always said that each of his daughters was worth 100 sons. He (and mommy) gave us so much love and attention that we each felt like an only child. I’m not sure HOW they raised us all in unity but it can only be God. The loss of my daddy has been a huge blow to all of us but we are comforted knowing that daddy lived a great and exceptional life. He loved God above ALL things and served his church, his country and his family to the best of his ability. He was a man of integrity, always doing what he said he would and doing it on time. He lived what he preached and believed; and I have no doubt in my mind that he is in a better place. It’ll take a while for this to truly sink in and for me to truly accept. I miss you, papa. When I had the opportunity to meet Tom, I had to show him this video that Ive watched countless times on YouTube over the years. One of the quotes that stood out then & now is Toms reply to the reporters question if eight hours of radio and four hours of flying everyday was excessive. His response? What am I doing? Im playing music and Im having fun. All day long. Well after he became a millionaire, that attitude of gratitude remained. If thats not the definition of professionalism, Ill never know it. Being a teenager, obsessed with music, and before I even had anything to say, I wanted to have a platform to say it. I equated being on stage with the only way to reach people because music was my first example. The problem was I suck at playing music and my vocals are terrible. Still, it didnt stop me from having a voice. It started with my clothing, then zines, then film, and now comics. I even managed to make tattooing political. So not to be too sentimental but the medium isn’t important, your voice is. Take a note from the punk scene. You don’t have to be wealthy, college educated, white or otherwise privileged to bring your art or your voice into the world. Don’t be afraid to start a new career, try out a new medium, or tell your story --AND don’t be afraid to be IMPERFECT! Im turning 36 soon. I still feel young. But I know by many peoples limited standards Im old. This morning I noticed more grey hairs and am feeling rather raggard. Im thinking about aging, agency, desirability and the fears that come up for me. I bristle with the cliche language used against older women, over the hill being a wilted flower and the sad and fruatrating experience I hear so many older woman share of being invisible. I think about how all my life Ive wrestled with wanting and not wanting to meet the hot or not cis-white-heteronormative-ageist-abelist male gaze. Performing for it, feeling powerful, then pulling away in frustration because of how much I modify everything about myself to fit it. How much damage is caused when the gaze falls on you when its not wanted. How much it hurts when you cannot meet the gaze when you want it. Anyway, with aging I keep thinking about these issues and different contexts of wanting and not wanting, empowerment, agency, pleasure and pride. I think about different kinds of desirability and attraction. And all the challenges and opportunities with extending and broadening eroticism and sensuality in my life. And also how finally escaping the narrow, diminishing, suffocating straight jacket *pun intended* of the male gaze may very well be an exciting path to liberation. - @sarahthefirth on Instagram
