[ENG] It took us a good couple of years to get to Dingle, but finally in August we took the opportunity to head southwest! The Dingle Peninsula really charmed us! So much so that we visited it slowly and relaxed a bit, enjoying a picnic on the beach with beautiful weather. Прошло 5 недель с момента, когда я сделал пост с криком души «Ворваться бы сейчас в океан» - и моя мечта сбылась, причем сразу по нескольким пунктам - Посерфить на океане, а то уже пол года после Шри-Ланки прошло - Посерфить на Тихом океане, т.к. никогда там не был - Слетать на Камчатку Спасибо @sheinaolga за эту поездку! 🤙🏄♂️🥳⠀ ⠀ Теперь я знаю, где в России можно нормально покататься на волнах, а не вот это все. Камчатка суровый край, что погода, что дороги, что некоторые персонажи. Но если ехать компанией, то любые походные условия вполне сносны, особенно если кроме хороших волн - все остально не так уже и важно. Я обязательно сюда вернусь, т.к. я не поднялся ни на один вулкан и не увидел касаток, зато накатался в сласть и зарядился на ближайшие несколько месяцев. Among other things this range contains arguably the finest example of a corrie or com in Ireland. The walk to Com Shinaun (Coumshingaun) is a demanding but short hike offering majestic views. Once the source of a small glacier that flowed off the Comeragh hills, we are left with a deep bowl in the mountainside which measures about a kilometre in length & breadth and with a depth of 400 metres on the massive back wall. A superb day trip, with relatively easy access from the Kilclooney Wood car park. The hike requires a little effort however you will be amply rewarded when you reach the lake nestled below the enclosing and soaring cliffs. Bull Rock Lighthouse . The tower was completed in 1864 and the light was established in 1866. In 1991 it was converted to an automatic Lighthouse and the keepers were withdrawn from the station. Imagine living on this rock! Very happy that I could take this drone shot. Hand landing the drone was smooth and easy, as the sea was very calm that day and our captain kept the boat steady 🙂. Last year I had the chance to go to a part of the world I didnt know anything about a few short months before my trip there. In an era of bad news, the Kuril Islands reminded me of all the beautiful, wild places that still exist. Not wild in the sense of without people, but wild in the sense of presence and connectedness that pervaded this place. A couple days ago the documentary film From Kurils with Love was released. Directed by @taylorfreesolo, it follows along @bigdaddivladi. Vladimir was a last minute addition to our trip but a long-time resident and researcher of the Kurils Islands. His love and care of the region helped spark an initiative to raise funds for research that will help inform management and protection of this incredible place. We thought finishing our trip there was the end of something. It ended up being a start of bigger, broader committment. Please check out the link in profile to watch the documentary. I am celebrating the conservation victory in Russia with this Russian killer whale that checked our boat out in the waters off Kamchatka Peninsula. The marine mammal eating killer whales has been added to the Red List which means that it will now be illegal to capture them for aquaria and zoos. Like surfing atop Mammoth Mountain. 50 mph arctic offshore winds sucked me out to sea during a lull in sets. After 20 minutes of paddling nonstop towards shore in a 6mil wetsuit I started looking across the bay for a last resort plan. Eventually I made it back into the lineup right as a big cleanup set landed on my head, washing me over the reef shelf and onto the beach, session over. Last week Matthew Ponsonby and Giles Johnson won our respect by undertaking a 4 day row in incredibly challenging conditions to raise money for @greatormondstreethospital and the Marine Conservation Society @mcs_uk ⠀ The pair rowed in Rannoch R25 Pegasus from Ilfracombe, around the Pembrokeshire coast and up to Aberystwyth. This was the ultimate non-stop mini adventure with full support from Rannoch staff in our protector RIB, Ranger. ⠀ ⠀ Matthew and Giles had initially planned to row to the furthest northerly point of England, the closest to Scotland that they could get (without breaking any government guidelines). ⠀ Unfortunately, due to brutal weather from the north and limited time available, they had to cut the row short and finish in Aberystwyth. ⠀ ⠀ Here’s a short breakdown of the 4 days:⠀ Day 1 – delayed start due to bad weather, leaving at 8pm from Ilfracombe.⠀ Day 2 – solid 14 hour rowing shift through previous night to get in much needed miles before more bad weather hit.⠀ Day 3 – rowing through the Bitches, a tidal race and set of rocks between Ramsey Island and the Welsh coastline near St David’s, popular with extreme sports enthusiasts. ⠀ Day 4 – battered by North Easterly winds, driving rain and strong tides. Decision had to be made to cut the row short.⠀ ⠀ A really strong and admirable effort by two very determined guys. About 50 people completed Explorers Grand Slam on land. I am sure the first person to complete it on land hadnt known how much it would mean to future explorers. Today its one of major trophies, it is almost an initiation that puts you in the context of land explorers. I am glad I could set standards for human powered expeditions and I hope it will become a threshold of ambition for future explorers. It took me 9 years to complete it. In certain way I feel I expanded the boundaries of what human is capable of. I earned 13 performance based Worlds Firsts during this journey, which happens to be the highest number of Firsts ever held by an explorer. I hope to see 50 people having completed Ocean Explorers Grand Slam in 30 years. I would like this title to be open to all human powered boats, whether powered by oars, paddling, pedals or kayaking. I would like it to be defined as completing a proper open waters crossing on each of 5 oceans by human power alone. I think the only great explorations left on the surface of Earth are the boundaries of human power performance. Every land has been well discovered and there are no blind spots on our maps any more, but there are many spots where human couldnt put feet or oar yet by manpower alone. Distances and mental strength still is to be explored. Ultra endurance is on major raise and I believe it will become the sports profile of the future. I think this is the most challenging Grand Slam one could undertake due to complexity of ocean rowing, especially in Polar areas. Antarctic Ocean will for sure be the most difficult piece of it.
