- Back in the day.
🚨 ONE YEAR REFLECTION 🚨 A year ago today, I launched the @alstonforathletes website! As I sit here and reflect, it’s truly humbling the amount of traction that has been made! Last year, I was a one man show. Managing the Finances, IT, Marketing, Fundraising, and Programs was causing me to burnout. And then the pandemic happened... With the cancellation of sports, mental health issues in athletics was going to be a prominent topic in our society. I saw that as a window of opportunity to scale the organization. For 10-12 hours a day for several months, I was networking with current and former student-athletes on LinkedIn. At that point in time is when things really began to take off... Many student-athletes summer internships were canceled due to the state of our economy, so they began reaching out to me about possible internships. Even though I had no initial plan or experience with managing people before, this was an opportunity for me to begin delegating tasks as well as forming a team. Now we have an operational team of 40 volunteers ranging from Italy, Denmark, Portugal, South Africa, Canada, Florida, Texas, Colorado, and California. I just wanted to thank my team for believing in me and our mission! Without you all, none of this is possible... Although we’ve made tremendous progress in one year, our mission is still not finished. Right now, times are tough for a lot of people. But if we continue to stay down, we will shed the light! The best has yet to come... I’ve experienced every single emotion going through this. I’ve had to sacrifice a lot of time with friends and family in order to create something that our society desperately needs... And I will not stop until we’re the largest grassroots student-athlete mental health organization in the world! Remember, consistency and persistency is key... When we came up with the basic idea of a video for a guy “who just can’t go fast enough”, I wasn’t expecting @pukapla (director) and @andyhoffman.x (cinematographer) to actually just drive to Utah and buy a Fiat to film 🥵, but they did and came back with these amazing shots. And super neat watching how they and the very talented crew made the additional studio shots happen here in Oakland. Feelin a little guilty that I chose a turtleneck and leather jacket for Mac’s character, it was pretty hot those 2 days. At a certain point I put on the backup turtleneck and leather jacket ready for action in case something went down. Very happy with how it turned out and thought everyone who worked super hard on it did a great job of matching the mood of the song so thanks again, this was a ton of fun to do with y’all. A total honour to have been involved in the utterly compelling #des. A really small part in an enormous show, filled with ‘best ever’ performances from the 3 leads @danielmays9 @jasonwatkinsofficial & David Tennant...but the performances across the board were straight out of the top drawer. The way the subject matter was handled, the story told, and every frame on screen was just sensational. My acting debut was entirely thanks to my bro @verbalictor & to the incredible @lewisaea for having faith in me. Thank you.
