{SEPTEMBER 13th, 1925 -- PHILANTHROPIST ALEXANDER SANGER DIES} On this day in 1925, Alexander Sanger, merchant, civic leader, and philanthropist, died in Dallas. The German native had followed his brothers to the United States in 1865. He arrived in Texas in 1872 and took over a branch of the family firm, Sanger Brothers, in Dallas. A pioneer of dry-goods wholesaling and retailing in Texas, Sanger Brothers was at one time the largest wholesale house in its line in the Southwest. For many years it was the premier department store of North Texas. In 1872 he helped to organize the first synagogue in Dallas, he served as a city alderman in 1873-74. His Hebrew Benevolent Association grew to become Temple Emanu-El. He encouraged the development of railroads in Dallas and helped organize the State Fair of Texas, serving as a director from its inception in 1886 until his death in 1925; he was president of the organization in 1894. He was instrumental in organizing the Dallas Volunteer Fire Department in 1873 and in obtaining for Dallas the services of city planner George E. Kessler. He was an active supporter of Southern Methodist University and also served as a regent for the University of Texas from 1911 to 1917. During World War I Sanger was active in the sales drives for Liberty Bonds and War Savings Stamps; he also served as chairman of the Dallas Food Conservation Board and as state merchant representative for the United States Food Administration. Sanger married Fannie Fechenbach on May 11, 1879; they had one son, Elihu, who later became a vice president of the company. Sangers granddaughter, Frances Sanger Mossiker, became an award-winning historical novelist. Alexander Sanger died in Dallas on September 13, 1925. I grew up in north India in the 1990s. My Brahmin family was full of government servants who were still carrying the colonial white man’s burden of racial prejudices and superiority complexes. Growing up in the close proximity of a large extended family, I was the only dark child. “Kaali-kaluti, baigan looti / Blacky-black smeared, she robbed the color of an eggplant,” my cousins would taunt when they wanted to have a laugh at my expense. I laughed along with them, eager to fit in. My skin color was particularly concerning to my mother, since we were an upper-caste Brahmin family. Anytime someone would call me dark, my fair-skinned mother would correct them and tell them I was “wheatish,” one of the many euphemisms in India for brown skin. It was her way of comforting herself that her daughter was a tad bit higher in the hierarchy than truly dark people. In a personal essay, @nehadixit123 explores Indias obsession with skin lightening and reflects on her own experiences. 🔸Look for the link in our bio to read the essay. . . ‘Enemy of the People’ is, without a doubt, a fantastic play for our times. The Erin Brokovich of his day, Dr.Stockmann, discovers some disturbing truths about the healing waters in their town, but will the people rise to the occasion or will it become fake news? The decision between the overall financial prosperity and the physical and spiritual health of a people has never felt more relevant in our lifetime. My typewriter piece selected for the @tatecollective long list! Typewriter art is the act of drawing with letters and symbols- the foundation of our language and communication- to preserve an artform, machine and technique in a modern world which has forgotten it. A piece inspired by Sheba Chhachhi’s portrait of writer and publisher Urvashi Butalia as a part of the Seven Lives and a Dream series, is naturally suited to a technique born from writing. In our fight for gender equality we have used language as our tool. The typewriters include sections from monumental open letters written by women (Leyla Güven, Indira Jaising, Vasudha Dhagamwar) while the TV plays homage to the protests of the 1972 Mathura rape case. Our women, and other words throughout, are omitted with ? and – as they are still taboo, misunderstood and underrepresented. Six typewriters, a protest and The Dream of continuing to use language and its power to change the world. #typewriterart #typewriter #tate #openletter - @mitoshkaa on Instagram

Today is Constitution Day. Drafted in secret by delegates to the Constitutional Convention during the summer of 1787, this four-page document, signed on this day in 1787, established the government of the United States. The Federal Convention convened in the State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would draft an entirely new frame of government. All through the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated, and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among the chief points at issue were how much power to allow the central government, how many representatives in Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected — directly by the people or by the state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of cooperative statesmanship and the art of compromise. Test your knowledge of this founding document in our story today. How much do you know about the Constitution? ... Photo: The Constitution of the United States, page 1, 9/17/1787.
