Endless respect for all the work done by @nobordersmcr It’s impossible not to feel hopeful knowing that you are tirelessly working to keep the fire burning and address what’s going on in the world right now. No Borders is a group which aims to work against the hostile border regimes across Europe, connect groups working towards similar aims and celebrate the work that is already being done. No Borders is an offshoot project of Manchester Refugee Rights Collective, which began in September 2018. They spent their first year running English classes, a range of musical and food nights and running fundraisers with money sent to Help Refugees, Paris Ground Support and Refugee and Asylum Seeker Participatory Action Research. More recently, they are establishing a support network, emergency funding pot and continue to work to support local community groups in Manchester. Thank you for including some of the photos I took of my beloved Chile earlier this year. I’ve always felt that Chilean and Latin American issues are overlooked in the mainstream media and having the opportunity to share this perspective means so much. This original hand lithograph Australian poster was made and used to promote the film Canadian documentary film ‘Blitzkrieg’ in 1962, the year it was released in Australia. It was discovered in a Victorian Farm shed. As the poster attests it makes extensive use of archival film but interestingly from 200 ‘German and Russian’ cameramen. Both perspectives are important because so much of the story of World War Two is dominated by the Western Allied view. However, the film is introduced by British General Sir Brian Horrocks who served in major European campaigns as well as the Russian Civil War. Blitzkrieg is a term used to describe a method of offensive warfare designed to strike a swift, focused blow at an enemy using mobile, maneuverable forces, including armored tanks and air support. Germany mastered this strategy early in World a War Two and the allied armies had little answer to it at this time. As a result the approach lead to sweeping victories by German forces with few losses on their part. Such an attack ideally leads to a quick victory, limiting the loss of soldiers and artillery. . Why is a killer book cover such a hard nut to crack? Because we DO judge a book by its cover and there are so many things to get right. The visual must be strong. With covers everywhere, online, bookshops, libraries, the cover must whisper to the subconscious ‘Im interesting. Reach out and pick me up.’ If a book doesn’t get past first base, it can fail quickly these days. The publisher and author loose money (plus all that writing goes down the drain), the book’s pulped, recycled or dumped in landfill and the author may have lost the chance to be published by someone who believed in them. This was Henni’s third book. Stella Street was now a series, so the cover had to signal that it belonged to earlier books, but not be too similar because the story was different. A cover must be true to the story, otherwise it’s like the corny old ‘SEX! Now I have your attention let me tell you about car insurance.’ What’s the story about? For what age group? What genre? What mood? What style and colours will show that? Okay. It’s about a gang of kids at a remote beach, having a wild free-roaming holiday which is complicated when chickee-babe Tara is foisted on Henni, then Tara meets the surfing Barbarians and things really get tricky. How old is Henni now? The human bookmark is thirteen, in high-school, not such a kid anymore, but still very much part of the Stella Street gang. Thirteen seems so much older than twelve. And the vital title? One word was missing - ‘The Ballad of —Bay’ (like the The Ballad of the Sad Café by Carson McCullers which I love.) ‘Ballad’ reflected Henni’s growing passion for poetry. Friends made suggestions but Macbeth held the solution. At Allen & Unwin they encouraged and waited. The final cover works, sort-of. What do you reckon? In All Forms of Knowledge” / 1924 / Soviet propaganda graphic design / 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗠 One of the 20th century’s most influential movements amounted to nothing less than an attack on art. In 1922, a Russian artist named Aleksei Gan penned a manifesto that began with words in glaring uppercase: “WE DECLARE UNCOMPROMISING WAR ON ART!” The Russian Revolution had taken place five years earlier, in 1917. The country was in the process of freeing itself from the grips of a powerful ruling elite; now it would revolutionize Russia’s cultural life, too, and put art to work in service of a new, Communist society. Gan and his artistic compatriots—including V.Tatlin and A.Rodchenko, considered the founders of the movement known as Constructivism, as well as V.Stepanova, L.Popova, El Lissitzky, and others—sought new art forms and modes of making art to serve the masses. Art, they believed, had no place in the hermetic space of the artist’s studio. Instead, it should reflect the modern, industrial world; be formulated in laboratories and factories; and be deployed as an active agent in the broader Communist revolution. The movement emphasized building and science, rather than artistic expression, and its goals went far beyond the realm of art. They soughts to influence architecture, design, fashion, and all mass-produced objects. In place of painterly concerns with composition. A new, Constructivist art would look toward industrial production; approach the artist as an engineer, rather than an easel painter; and serve the proletariat. Constructivists used sparse, geometric forms and modest materials. When he was a kid, @jacob_soderqvist ‘s brother shot him through the eye with an arrow that somehow didn’t kill him. But Jacob wasn’t going to let a little incident like that get in the way of his dreams and went on to become a professional snowboarder with just one eye. I had the pleasure of laughing and snowboarding with Jacob in some unreal places in the mid nineties and one night in May at around one in the morning we were riding just north of the arctic circle in Norway when I snapped this one of him as the sun was setting over the Atlantic/Herjangsfjorden. What’s special about this cover for me is that it ran without the usual words and blurbs that try to sell you the magazine. It was a quarter century ago and I thought I remembered it being someone else’s idea but @gcharlie , the photo editor from back then insists the idea was mine and that I demanded the photo to run naked or to send it back. Either way it was an honor to be a senior photographer for @snowboardermag back then and it was the first snowboard magazine cover of its kind. This trip to Scandinavia in ‘96 was to film for the third Twist movie ’TheGift’ with @marcfrankmontoya @kwastell @tjliese @ian_ruhter @wesmakepeace @nathanyant and Jacob but I’m glad I brought my still camera too. 📷: @justinhostynek prolly Velvia #canoneos1 #35mmphotography - @absinthefilms on Instagram
