Back to School 2020 - part 2 of 3 As schools in Memphis reopen virtually due to rising coronavirus cases, parents find themselves scrambling to find a balance between their livelihood and their children’s education. There are more than 100,000 students enrolled in Shelby County Schools. I spent time with eight families, sharing stories of uncertainty, frustration and resilience told through their voices. Tonya Reece, a workshop manager at BRIDGES, and Tui Mataele, an Apple laptop technician, live with their children, Elena Mataele, 15, a sophomore at Central High School; Alana Reece-Walker, 16, a junior at Central High School; and Julian Mataele, 11, a sixth-grader at Memphis Grizzlies Preparatory Charter School. Tonya’s son, Devron Yancey, 21, lives with them, as well along with his son, Malakai Carrick, 4, a pre-kindergartener at Brewster Elementary. Tiffany Blackman an environmental health and safety specialist, and Pierre Blackman, a wholesale supply manager, with their son, D.J. White, 16, a junior at Memphis Academy of Health Sciences. Today we were honored to have Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Crump here in Tempe, AZ to speak at our press conference for Tre Cumpian, a black victim of excessive force used by Tempe Police. He is the second victim of the racist officer Kerzaya this year. Ben Crump is “Black Amerika’s attorney general”. He has never failed to stand up for black lives that have been taken and dehumanized at the hands of police. He has represented Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, Jacob Blake and many other Black lives that we are forced to remember as a result of the serial killing committed by these murderers in uniform. We appreciate Mr. Crump taking the time to fly in and speak with us regarding the excessive force used against our brother Tre, especially on the same day we are all heartbroken by the news that none of the officers involved in the cruel murder of Breanna Taylor will be held accountable. It is a shame that the violence of Tempe Police has put us on the radar of national civil rights leaders. Education is a very important part of walks like this.” McIntyre emphasized that Alzheimer’s can happen to anyone. Her mother passed away in her 50’s from early onset Alzheimer’s. “This online party helped Hope get through a very difficult period in her life as she loves being with people and the interaction it brings.” Lockdown was a strange time for all of us, but here at Starlight it gave us a chance to truly understand what some of our shielding families deal with on a daily basis. Whilst restrictions eased for most of us, lots of our lovely families had no choice but to continue to isolate. With this in mind, throughout the summer holidays we put on a virtual #StarlightEscape each week for our families to enjoy. These parties were a chance for the children to interact with others, sing, dance and distract themselves from daily life! ...Department grow and expand the career and technical courses of study offered at EHS. She has taken a leadership role in the department in regard to the programs of study and the requisitions. Jackie is in charge of the Wildcat Cafe and does a great job with the student workers. She is also a Senior Class sponsor and spends lots of time working on homecoming, and all senior activities. A fellow co-worker says, Jackie goes above and beyond! She will do anything and everything to make your job easier! Jackie will be an excellent representative of El Dorado High School. EHS could not have chosen a more deserving employee for the Classified Employee of the Month. Diana Carden is the face of EHS as parents and the community enter the building. She is so kind and patient with all...from students, teachers and parents. One of the faculty members describes her as cheerful, kind, and always helpful--school secretary extraordinaire! Diana multitasks as she is checking in a late student, while talking on the phone to a parent, and handing a staff member something they need. She is in charge of many of the tedious tasks needed to finalize graduation and orders much of the graduation materials. Another co-worker says, she is part of the backbone of this school, and yet, she often goes unnoticed. Diana is a great representative of EHS and the El Dorado School District. Kasey Dumas is a very deserving recipient of the student of the month award. Kasey is the daughter of Jamie and Lisa Dumas, is in the 11th grade at EHS, and maintains a 4.14 GPA while taking 3 AP classes and 1 Pre-AP class. One of her teachers says Kasey continues to complete excellent and timely work through AMI and distance learning! [She has a] perpetually positive attitude and kind spirit. She is very involved in school activities. She is a four year member of the Student Council, a member of Beta Club, photography club, steering committee, and a member of National Honor Society. Kasey is quiet, but friendly and kind to all. Another teacher describes her as encouraging, thoughtful, and a joy to be around. This week while I was in Nashville, I witnessed firsthand the devastation of the recent tornadoes along with the selflessness of neighbors, strangers and celebrities alike. Upon arriving back in Texas, I had the chance to attend the check presentation for the monies we raised at our “Night Of Cheer” concert at Wassailfest in the streets of New Braunfels in December. We - you the fans, along with the @downtownnewbraunfels, the city of New Braunfels, @ShinerBeer, @platinum_homestx, my band, crew and team - raised $30,000 for 15 charities that lost their fundraising booths during the recent Wurstfest Marketplatz fires. Reposting this because its SO IMPORTANT! 👇 Heres why... . Lets talk #PelvicFloor! Youve probably all heard, Be sure to do your kegels! But something equally (sometimes more) important, that is often overlooked... PELVIC FLOOR RELEASES! Many people walk around constantly tensing their pelvic floor muscles, then when extra pressure is added (think cough, sneeze, laugh, jump), the muscles are too tight to properly do their job. There is often a strength component at play as well, and kegels (along with other strengthening work) can be very helpful with that. But we cant properly strengthen any muscle that is too tight. First we must learn to fully relax/release/lengthen that muscle. Imagine holding your arm straight out with a heavy book in your hand for multiple hours... now imagine your child runs over and decides to hang on your arm (probably not hard for most of us to imagine 😉)... Its going to be incredibly challenging to keep your already exhausted arm from buckling. If your arm started in a relaxed state, your childs weight would be much more bearable, your strength better able to respond to the sudden pressure. . 👉 Swipe for photos of MY 3 FAVORITE PELVIC FLOOR RELEASES. Incorporate deep 360/diaphragmatic breathing into each of these movements, focusing on fully letting go of the pelvic floor muscles. You will feel them naturally lengthen/release as your ribcage and belly gently fill with air. A lot of cloud 9 as we close down the pop up gallery we created out of thin air this weekend. It all started with a call out to artists on Instagram this summer to help paint the plywood surrounding a theatre due to protests in the city. In an effort to beautify and support the movement we artists got to work. That catapulted us to this opportunity and I’m just along for the ride. Rostrum is an antiquated term for “platform”, I dreamed this little idea up over 18 months ago, of creating a place or group or event or..or..; but had no idea what it was going to look like. I love that I can hold that idea & dream loosely and watch all the @rostrum312 fun unfold on its own. Thank you to ALL who came out, waited in line (for 45 minutes!), patiently navigated Covid measures with us, sipped bubbles, enjoyed our jazz trio, bought art, and above all, just showed your support, it’s everything. ✨ Thank you to @gandz1980 for watching the kiddos all weekend AND virtually schooled them. Just over a week ago we wrapped principal photography on @shivababymovie, my first feature film as a Producer. I cannot express in words the gratitude I have for the entire crew and cast. Everyone from our Production Assistants up to our Department Heads showcased such dedication, skill, and excitement for this movie and I owe each of them the world. A huge thank you to our Shiva Queen @emmmaseligman, who entrusted @kindofokatie, @lizzie.shapiro, and myself with her baby. On the same day we wrapped SHIVA BABY, I also quietly acknowledged that I had now lived in the United States for exactly six years - almost all of my adult life. I am unbelievably proud of what I’ve achieved in those six years and I know it is because of the confidence others have placed in me before I had it in myself. Special shout out to my parents, who have given so much to their children, family, and wider community with no expectation of anything in return. It has certainly been six years of ups and downs and the homesickness has been real. But wherever you all are, I want you to know I’m very, very happy, and I hope you are too. This is so cool! Senior computer science majors Isaac Edminster and Andy Wang have created a prosthetic biosensor that detects the voltage in muscles and transmits that energy to a prosthetic hand.⠀ ⠀ ➡️ Head over to our story to see their invention in action! ⠀ ⠀ The biosensor, which started out as a Servant Engineering project, ended up being a finalist in the Invent Oregon competition, earning the team $2500 for further development. WVC faculty and staff continue to prepare for in-person classes that are set to begin this Thursday, Aug. 20. WVC Student Services staff members gave new students campus tours today. The students and staff all wore masks throughout the tour, pursuant to the updated guidance from public health officials. The Department of Public Health has issued changes to their emergency amendment that required IECC to update its “Restore IECC” plan as well as the “Return to Campus” guidelines for the colleges. The most notable change is that face coverings *must* be worn indoors in any public space – including classrooms/hallways – regardless of the ability to remain socially distant. Britannia staff have got their orange on today in support of reconciliation, and to show solidarity with First Nations communities affected by the Residential Schools program. The events were designed to commemorate the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Chief Justice Murray Sinclair challenged all of the participants to keep the reconciliation process alive, as a result of the realization that every former student had similar stories. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of this project. As spokesperson for the Reunion group leading up to the events, former student Phyllis (Jack) Webstad told her story of her first day at residential school when her shiny new orange shirt, bought by her grandmother, was taken from her as a six-year old girl. The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to participate in @communitycarewn BACKPACK program event. What this means is that over 150 students in the Lincoln area have gone back to school with brand new age appropriate supplies. And a @commUNITYmasks! We were happy to participate in this event as you all know that giving back is core to what we do.
