Spared. Blessed. A tornado ravaged our town today, passing about a 1/2 mile north of our house. Oddly enough, the pandemic quarantine had left the mall and major restaurants basically empty, sparing hundreds of people as the storm tore through those areas more than anything else. Please pray for Jonesboro. We’re a strong community, but in times that are already uncertain and strained, the effect is going to be more pronounced. I’m thankful that I can just do the normal routine of giving my daughter a bath and tucking her in safe for the night. ZDF - Afrika (Alexa Mini with Super Speeds) For the second part of Timm’s film, we first went to amboseli national park, which is right near Mt Kilimanjaro. We wanted to capture the nature and wildlife aspect of Africa, but as some of you might know, getting good shots of big game like lions, elephants etc is not something that’s easily done in 1,5 days. Some photographers spend several weeks, just to get one good picture of an elephant herd lined up with the sunset. We shot mostly on a 25mm, so I wanted and needed to get really close to the animals. Rangers are not really keen on you leaving the safari car, and their general rule was, that I am only allowed to go as far away from the car, that I could make it back in time if an elephant decided to charge me. Being crazy about animals, I took every chance I got to get as close to any game I could find. Shots weren’t really that good. Since most of them wander towards water in the morning and back from water in sunset, better try to find a spot that’s in line with their water-route and then wait for them there. Timm was driving and this massive bull just ventured straight towards our car. For the second part, we flew to Kakuma refugee camp on the border to South Sudan, in a small Cessna by these two badass pilots. We visited a school and, as it is most of the time in slums/camps, a ton of kids instantly swarmed us. While it may be cool for the first moments or two, here there were so many kids around us, touching everything, your arms, face, hair, the camera, easyrig, that at some point we had to stop shooting until they went back to class. Also if you have visible tattoos, be prepared to get pinched. Just a quick shout out to the man @martinrchtr/@soup.film who did a killer job producing these three travel-monsters, always having our backs and making sure that we all get back home! Wine Country has become tragically familiar with fast-moving wildfires erupting in the dead of night amid intense autumn winds, threatening lives and homes and forcing evacuations. It happened in 2017, when parts of Santa Rosa were incinerated. It happened again last October, when the largest wildfire of the year burned near Geyserville. And it happened once more late Sunday and early Monday. Kevin Sanford, pictured above, lost his entire home to the blaze that hit residential neighborhoods in eastern Santa Rosa overnight.
