These arent just books. These are paper jewellery.🍁 Have always been in love with the Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Editions. I started collecting these since a couple of years back. And although I own a few by now, I feel utterly betrayed that these are not available in the market here in India, except for only a few that are sold on online shopping portals. 🙂 I have seen videos of owners of these magnificent collectibles showing off their lot in their private libraries and tell you what, how beautiful the stack looks. Gilded in gold and silver, the pages emit such a reflective hue when tilted along the sides against the light. And the spine, oh the spine! ❤ Seeing them in the bookcase, one against the other, looks like a bride clad in her most beautiful jewellery. The cover needs no description of course with such immaculate designs that are precise enough to pass for a chest of treasure. The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas. This particular one is my favourite of the lot. It was love at first sight for me when I came across this Blue and Gold covered edition. Besides this, I also own Les Miserables, Shakespeares Complete plays, four of Charless Dickenss novels, Alice in Wonderland, A Journey to the Center of the Earth, Star Wars, Edgar Allan Poes short story collection and Twains Huckleberry Finn. I have been requested by bookstagrammers to put posts of my BnN collection. But I have been way too lazy. I hope I do it frequently from hereon. 😌 Meanwhile, I hope everyone is staying safe and sound. I have been irregular here for sometime now, mostly after I have been badly demoralised by the new instagram algorithm. But Id like to say that the times are difficult and we need to show most resolution now since unlock is happening. Health system is getting saturated. And a lot of the doctors and healthcare workers are falling sick too. So, please wear your masks properly, maintain physical distancing. I’m part of a group putting together an historical #brushchallenge for TikTok so while I was at it I took this small series of photos. The year is 1900. I used strategic blocking so you couldn’t tell my skirt dates to the 1910s 😅 most of my collection is several thousand miles away and otherwise inaccessible to me. . This shirtwaist, of course, belongs to my #Aziraphale cosplay; I made it before all the COVID madness began. Everything else are antiques, including the tie pin. . As I’ve been researching hair in 1900-1902, I’ve been surprised with how red the models’ lips often are. It’s the largest number of color fashion plates I’ve ever taken a look at, at one time. I think a lot of us assume red lips were a style of the 1920s, but we can trace that style even earlier. . prompt : reasons why my dark shadows are poetical by @_writing.chaos_ tw: self harm, death, poisoning ----------------------------- metaphors are synonymous with ashy paint peeling off chipped cracked walls of rundown houses at the outskirts of town. my best friend tells me those houses are haunted, she tells me my poems arent. but I see the fear brimming beneath her onyx lashes when she sees my blanched eyes glinting like the club lights that haunt her sleep. the stigmatas decorating my arms are the reasons why my dark shadows are poetical enough to be mistaken for art. my ichor flows out in burgundy rants, coating my skin with 7.4 pH fluids appearing on broken bathroom tiles of those houses each time the residents slice the snares binding their hearts to the rest of their anatomy when they enact gruesome scenes that makes my mind sing rhapsodies in glee. the veins on my skin look like cuscutas, blooming from the essence of my crimson cardiac, suffocating my lungs each time they wrap themselves around my nimble frame. the venom that courses through them seeps into my plasma and churns my cells till they reek of the heartbreaks i felt back when I believed in love. my pallor turns cerulean till I am but a vessel dipped in poison, devoid of breath. thats how my best friend finds me, a fuselage of glacial skin and mauve swathes, lying insensate on her bathroom tiles in a pool of the fluid saturated in memories of haunted houses and club lights and gory evenings as the the last molecules of oxygen (read: art) egress my soul and make me fall prey to the shadows that the world mistakes for poetry. ~aishvarya// my poetry is not art - @sheisvarya on Instagram

What is a food you associate with your childhood? Theres a lot of food that comes to mind when I think of my family sitting around the dinner table and talking over each other with nothing really to say but smiling and chatting all the same. Im one of four siblings and my mother is partially Italian so it could get pretty loud at dinner time. But the food that I think I will always associate with my childhood is chocolate cake. My dad loves a simple chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and more often than not, there was a cake being fixed on the weekends. I don’t usually write about contemporary books. Time makes review shade into analysis, where I am more comfortable. For a book as popular and recent as The Secret History, I worry there is discourse I’m not privy to -- will I come off as trite, repeating often repeated observations? Or, will I step on toes? But, I can’t resist talking about TSH. It’s a book I’m too fond of, and a community I have planted myself into. It only seems right. I first read TSH in college. I remember as I was reading the prologue, I was swept up in Tartt’s prose -- effortless but solid, perfectly paced and planned, like a marble statue so dynamic and fluid that you can’t believe it is stone. And how tempting, how romantic was the picture: escape, fabricate, delve into some terrible new world. Tartt is able to capture the moment when, poring over some text in the library, the obscure begins to unravel and open. But, the more you uncover, the less you know, the greater the gaps between our understanding seem. In the same way, the more I read The Secret History, the more opaque it is to me. Maybe it’s simply because I’m older, but I find myself wanting to dig a little deeper beyond the facades, and find that I can’t. The Dionsysian revelry is deeper than just Bacchanals. He was the god of theatre, as well. Every character is playing an act, reciting lines that veil themselves, putting on masks of intellectualism, aestheticism. And, although the Secret History is a long, thorough book, it does not reveal everything -- and maybe that’s why I keep coming back to it, to see where the masks slip. ☕️ i want to thank @hearthandhammer for gifting me these lovely candles. each candle in this collection corresponds to a call number in the library of congress, which i think is a perfect bookish touch. they smell absolutely lovely. i’m going to purchase the autumn candle — it’s one of the few pumpkin candles my boyfriend enjoys! 🍂 - @caffeaulait on Instagram

Oscar Wilde may not be the first writer that comes to mind when it comes to anti-colonialist literature, but The Picture of Dorian Gray holds possible veiled criticism of British Colonialism. Although Wilde was rather prejudiced against England’s colonized states (save for his birthplace, Ireland, where he staunchly favored Home Rule), he did not shy away from criticizing English Victorian mania for “collecting” artifacts. Dorian compulsively buys artifacts & “exotica” -- from antiques to performers to flowers -- to quell his urge for new experiences and sensations and to quiet the growing anxiety over his decrepit portrait. His obsessive hoarding parallels contemporary Victorian colonialists who infamously stole and hoarded artifacts for their museums and personal collections as the British Empire began to wane and decay. Dorian’s preoccupation with materialism to distract from his own portrait, Roger Platizky notes is, “analogous to a colonizer’s simultaneous fascination and contempt for the people he colonizes. Dorian feels thrilled and appalled by the ‘terrible portrait whose changing features showed him the real degradation of life.’” Maybe Wilde was showing a potential trajectory of the British Empire -- an embrace of materialism and “exotica” to obscure its own internal decay (the suffering of colonized people and the Industrial working class.) 🍂 I remember seeing the trailer of “Kill Your Darlings” (on my laptop in this picture) in 2013, and little 16 year old baby bis-xual Rachel was intrigued to say the least. I didn’t watch it until college (I wouldn’t been allowed to and hence I didn’t ask lol) but I suppose it’s been pretty formative to my sense of style. Like I knew what was going to happen and I was like meh. Plus I find the movie really bad, so yeah. But let’s stay chill, you can like it. ⠀ The last week, I’ve watched 2 shows : Little fires everywhere and Normal people and as soon as I had finished the tv shows, I ordered the books. What shows/movies get you in an autumn mood? For me, it’s basically any gloomy Victorian period piece or historical fiction 🍂 This show (“The Alienist”) is based off a book a novel of the same name by Caleb Carr, son of Lucien Carr. I just watched the film “Kill Your Darlings,” which is a movie about Allen Ginsberg and his friend, Lucien Carr. And I can already say that, to give you a proper review, I’ll have to reread it before. Because what a rich book and a wild read it was ! ⠀ I gave it 4.5 stars, because honestly it is SO WORTH reading it. Rebecca is a romance, a gothic novel, a mystery, there’s murder, the characters are morally grey, veryyyy complex. It is dark, eerie, gorgeous. ⠀ There is this whole atmosphere that is hard to describe in Rebecca. It is old candle holders, a sinister castle, luxurius clothes, the weight of secrets, a full moon sleepless night ; it is Manderley. ⠀ And the writing style ! My friends, I was EATING the words. Like literally. Such a gorgeous prose. ⠀ The gorgeous autumnal woodmark on the picture is from @fablesandbones. Use MAEVA10 if you wanna order something! ⠀ ▻ Is there a genre you want to explore more ? As it is autumn, I wanna read more Gothic literature. ⠀ ⠀ ─── 🍂 FRENCH 🍂 ─── ⠀ Les amis, jai fini Rebecca. Et je peux déjà dire que, pour vous donner un avis correct, je devrai le relire avant. Parce que quel livre riche et quelle lecture sauvage cétait! ⠀ Je lui ai donné 4,5 étoiles, car honnêtement, il en vaut vraiment la peine. Rebecca est une romance, un roman gothique, un mystère, il y a un meurtre, les personnages sont moralement gris, très complexes. Cest sombre, étrange, magnifique. ⠀ Il y a toute cette atmosphère difficile à décrire dans Rebecca. Ce sont de vieux bougeoirs, un château sinistre, des vêtements luxueux, le poids des secrets, une nuit de pleine lune sans sommeil; cest Manderley. ⠀ Et le style décriture! Les amis, je MANGEAIS les mots. littéralement. C’est une prose si magnifique. ⠀ ▻ Y a-t-il un genre que vous souhaitez explorer davantage?
