Faced with the necessity to reschedule their wedding due to COVID, Samantha and Ryan decided their marriage shouldn’t wait. We arrived on Patos Island by private seaplane and Samantha and Ryan were married at the water’s edge in front of the lighthouse. Champagne and snacks were enjoyed on a wildflower bluff overlooking the small cove and then they sailed on their friend’s sailboat to Orcas Island. There, they dined on local seafood where they will be holding their future reception in 2021. What a spectacular day celebrating two wonderful people in such a picturesque backdrop. Having seen the fallout of a fearful public, the unfortunate culling of numerous species across the world, he became actively involved in their conservation. WHOI associate scientist and Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife shark expert Greg Skomal, commented on @Scientific_American to remind people that sharks are much more than toothy meat-eaters. “[In the book and movie] they had it satisfying hunger by consuming humans. They don’t do that. White sharks did not evolve with humans as prey or food,” said Skomal. “The Jaws shark even seemed vindictive, attacking the boat and going after the captain. A lot of people have told me that they couldn’t live life the way that I do. Shit, I get it, it’s not easy always moving and shifting directions. My life is very uncertain, but it also keeps me adaptable and present. When an opportunity for growth, challenge, or adventure arises, I try to take it. Because I learn from doing and experiencing new things in my body. Truth is, uncertainty exist everywhere, even for those with the house, the job, retirement funds, and families. And when the winds of change shift drastically and unexpectedly, those who have planned their exact course might find that fighting the changing conditions will rock their ship harder than those who are used to adjusting their course and going with the wind. I’m not saying one is better than the other—show me the hot mindful husband and the house with a veggie garden and I’ll unpack my bags tomorrow. But life has been more uncertain than ever and basically a shitstorm for everyone lately. So here’s a bit of advice from someone who’s constantly adjusting their sails.... KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE HORIZON! You have to trust that more amazing things are heading your way and you have to fully let go of the old course. If you’re looking back at where you wanted to go, you’ll miss the opportunity to go where you may be destined to be next. When I get scared of my uncertain future, I like to think back to all the times that good things just magically landed in my life. Remember when you met the person you love so much? You didn’t know they when and where they were coming, they just appeared. Remember when you got the dream job? You couldn’t predict that either. What makes you think that no more good things are left to appear? New opportunities will present themselves magically, but not if your hauling a huge load of “should haves” on your back while hunched looking at the ground or looking back at your old life. Look up, keep your eyes peeled, because the next thing to show up could be the absolute best thing yet.
