Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials that are native to Australia. They are about 1 m (40 in) in length with small, stubby tails and weigh between 20 and 35 kg (44 and 77 lb). There are three extant species and they are all members of the family Vombatidae. They are adaptable and habitat tolerant, and are found in forested, mountainous, and heathland areas of southern and eastern Australia, including Tasmania, as well as an isolated patch of about 300 ha (740 acres) in Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland. Female wombats give birth to a single young after a gestation period of roughly 20-30 days, which varies between species. All species have well-developed pouches, which the young leave after about six to seven months. Wombats are weaned after 15 months, and are sexually mature at 18 months. A group of wombats is known as a wisdom, a mob, or a colony. Koala lovers unite, today Friday 25 September is Save the Koala Day! . 🐨 Today’s plight (although every day really is save the koala day) is about recognising the vulnerable state of Australia’s native Koala, that is teetering on the brink of extinction even more so after our catastrophic fires earlier this year. If we don’t take urgent action now, then we will no doubt see the extinction of Koalas happen on our watch and in our lifetime. That is a harrowing thought. . 🐨 Today is to get you thinking about actions we can take as a nation to protect the future of this iconic animal that we all know and love, but who are sadly losing their homes and lives. . 🐨 Now is the time to act before it’s too late. Here are some actions you can take today to help; . 🌿If you have the land then why not plant some eucalyptus trees? . 🌿Get involved with some local koala rescues by offering your time to volunteer . 🌿Adopt a Koala . 🌿Support organisations who work specifically towards Koala protection and rehabilitation . 🌿Donate towards Koala breeding and Koala food tree planting programs . 🌿Write to your local MP to take action on Koalas and the protection of their habitat . 🌿Check out our friends at @queensland_koala_society_inc who we support and work closely with (remember little Kurt? Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter, in Victoria, cares for sick and injured koalas. An IFAW / Gina Canine: Orphans of the Fires grant allowed the shelters team to purchase veterinary triage equipment and supplies enabling them to continue providing examinations, treatment and critical care for its patients. The timing of the grant and the purchasing of urgent equipment was so important. It helped provide the team with the necessary resources needed to re-hydrate and care for the koalas that were impacted directly by the Gippsland bushfires. Flashback Friday: because we missed last week’s Flashback Friday, this week, we are getting in early. With the recent announcement of the New South Wales Government committed to a $44.7 million koala strategy, along with a range of other practical measures to ensure the preservation of koala populations and habitat, we thought we would take you back to the 1950s. Throughout the 1950s, the Society continued its efforts to encourage governments to establish new national parks and nature reserves to protect Australia’s native wildlife and habitats. It was an active decade, with Thistle Harris Stead the president from 1949-1952 and Walter Henry Childs President from 1953-1960. Activities centered around the guardianship of the reserves and sanctuaries with a watchful eye on the intrusive leases, a call for new reserves, or protest over so-called ‘improvements’. Eighteen sanctuaries or reserves came under the Society’s surveillance during the 1950s, as reported in Roy Bennett’s Brief History of 1959. The following are just three examples: - Barrington Tops Proposed National Park. A strong deputation to the Minister for Conservation was held in April 1957 to ask for the preservation, free from logging, of the Upper Williams Valley as this was considered an essential part of Barrington Tops Park. - - Ku-ring-gai Chase. The Society was unsuccessful in preventing the creation of a boatshed on these parklands (1955). Later in the same year, however, a request for the construction of an aerodrome in the chase, which we had also opposed, was refused. - Macquarie Marshes. We protested the issue of mining leases in this area where, for over forty years, we have been hoping to have a reserve. The leases were refused. Activities associated with preservation campaigns were not restricted to sanctuaries and reserves, but the struggle for improved legislation for continued export of fauna, general fauna protection, and a call for Commonwealth coordination. The name Sapphire was carefully and unanimously selected by our keepers because it represents her importance to koalas and the zoo. Our brave little man Patu swam away in a river of tears yesterday at 4.30pm in the expert care of Dr Don and Zoe. He had fought courageously for the last 8 weeks but his condition deteriorated markedly in the last 10 days. The combined weight of @noahs_ark_vet and Port Stephens Koalas were deployed to try and save him with a herculean around the clock effort. Marion and I were with him in his last moments. He fought to the end and his last memories would have been of his first yard where he learnt about the world with his Mum Eila were we let him rest after Dr Dons visit in the clinic. There has been a mighty commitment to Patu from our volunteers and staff. Erica and Zoe lead a large number of fiercely dedicated people who without their help Marion and I could not have got through. I buried him this morning at the Koala Hospital 20 metres from where he first saw the world. His grave is marked by a ‘Just Joey’ standing rose. We joyfully announce the debut of Phoenix daughter of Holly. This photo was taken @clelandwildlifepark by @ashhunter1 Ashleigh (Ash) was one of the Cleland triage team that helped us in the dark days of January. Holly was rescued (and named) by Ash and the team and only much later they discovered that Holly was carrying a fire baby. Last month when I visited Cleland I thought it appropriate to name her Phoenix. There are many fire babies at HBWS (mostly kangaroo and wallaby but also brush tail possum and koala).Keeping with longstanding tradition very few will be named. I hope to post photos of Phoenixs HBWS bushfire baby cousins in the near future. I have seen them but just cant get a good shot yet. As the weather warms and they spend more time out of the pouch my chances will get better. Like Phoenix, HBWS is slowly rising from the ashes and we grow more confident that the best is yet to come. I would like to express our gratitude to all those who have rallied around us from all over the world. It is also a necessary time to focus on how we will prevent further extinctions events. . Today, WWF-Australia and Biolink have released a heartbreaking report on the impact of Australias koalas during the catastrophic bushfires of 2019-20. Researchers are deploying heat-seeking drones and studying the chemistry of leaves to determine how creatures like the koala can survive in a burned landscape, a new effort to understand the effects of devastating wildfires across the globe.⠀ ⠀ About 73,000 square miles were burned in Australia’s most recent fire season, an area bigger than Washington state, and a recent study estimated that three billion animals were in the path of the flames. But the study, led by researchers from the University of Sydney, couldn’t say exactly how many creatures perished. Some animals can flee to unburned patches, rocky outcrops or burrows, but little is known about how they fare after a blaze.⠀ ⠀ “You’d think we’d know a bit more about how animals like the koala deal with fire,” said Kara Youngentob, a research fellow at Australian National University who is investigating what koalas can eat in a recently burned forest. “It’s amazing what we still don’t know about them in a country where fire does occur regularly.”⠀ ⠀ Many animals have strategies for dealing with fires, and some plants even require heat from the flames to germinate their seeds. But scientists worry the trend toward bigger and more destructive fires—partly because of climate change—poses a significant risk even for fire-adapted species. In California, where firefighters have battled huge wildfires, one study showed that the annual area burned had quintupled over recent decades.⠀ ⠀ The results from Dr. Youngentob and other scientists across Australia could inform policy on how best to help struggling wildlife. BREAKING NEWS: This #Savethekoaladay we’re one step closer to achieving a much needed Endangered listing for our precious koalas. Koala populations of NSW, QLD and the ACT have been added to a priority list for assessment by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee. Federal Environment Minister, Sussan Ley, has given the Committee a deadline of October 2021 to make a recommendation on uplisting. Eucalyptus is toxic⚠️, so the koala’s🐨 digestive system has to work hard to digest it, breaking down the toxins🧪 and extracting limited nutrients. That’s why koalas🐨 sleep💤 so much, they get very little energy from their diet🌿. Tucked into forks or nooks in the trees🌳, koalas🐨 may sleep for 18 to 22 hours. Koala🐨 numbers plummeted in the late 19th and early 20th century from hunting for their fur😢. Now they face serious threats from habitat🌳 loss. Land clearing, logging, and bushfires🔥 especially the devastating 2019-2020 season have destroyed much of the forest🌳 they live in. Regi is our most critical koala in care. This is his story. On the 20th of August, Regi was attacked by a dog in a backyard. You see, Regi lives in suburbia where koala habitat barely exists now, so he survives as best as he can, dodging cars and dogs. He had been doing quite well (he last came into care 4 years ago when he had a misadventure). He was released back to his home after that short stay with us and had remained in that location ever since. 5 months ago, a family with a dog moved in to Regis territory. Unfortunately, Regi encountered the dog and bravely fought for his life. His arms were covered in bites, as well as his head and rump. Our vet and nurse team (Jackie and Marley) worked on him at night for hours into the early hours of the morning. It was touch and go for a long time as more traumatised tissue died off and he battled infection and gut issues due to treatment with antibiotics. Now he has finally started to heal. He is not out of the woods yet and is receiving regular bandage changes and constant monitoring. The dog was also injured as well as the owner who was horrified that the incident had occurred and was completely unaware that Regi lived in the area. The home owners now know that dogs and koalas do not mix and we have helped to educate them. Hopefully we can get Regi back where he belongs, with a few impressive scars that he can show his mates. Hope was born at Currumbin after her pregnant mother was wounded by a car earlier this year. This reserve rescues them and they make sure they are well cared for and fed . I must be honest the photo lasted less than 2 seconds 😂 and they took it from my arms .. I felt my heart ripped out.
