I used to have the kreg stop block system in my miter station, but found myself not consistently trusting the values on the fixed measuring tape, and constantly still double checking it. Plus the swivel arm @kregjig has a tiny bit of give to it that left my cuts inconsistent depending how much pressure I pushed. So I switched to this system, which I love now! Upgrades time... For my old printer. My old printer is a @geeetech3dprinter A10, and while its not a great printer, I got everything out of it I thought I would: a good understanding of everything that can go wrong with a #3dprinter and how to fix it. One of the most important lessons I learned was that the printer was the last one Id ever own that wasnt direct drive. On cheaper printers, the extruder and its motor are on the gantry and theres a long tube, called the bowden tube, between it and the hot end. This saves weight on the carriage where the printer does most of the moving, but in my experience was just a pain in the ass. If the tube isnt the exact right length or has turns that are too tight, you run the risk of under extruding or other weirdness. Besides all that, flexible filaments are impossible because its like pushing a car uphill with a rope. On direct drive #3dprinters, the extruder feeds right into the hot end, reducing complexity and issues. I had a mod for this printer that allowed me to move the extruder and turn it into direct drive. Everything worked so much better once installed. Now Im looking to upgrade the hot end, and decided to try out another mod (the green bit) that makes it direct drive, but moves everything so its on the center line of the hot end, reducing ringing that came with the slight imbalance of the old one. Only problem is the mount for my new hot end is wider, so its out of line with the extruder. Fortunately, @tinkercad made it easy to stretch everything so it meets up better. I failed to account for the connector for the motor, but I corrected with pliers in this version, but fixed in v2 (coming soon). Not a perfect line up, but should be close enough. Continuing with the archtop project.. Now that the brace is replaced and the new fretboard is glued on, I can glue the box back together moving around the perimeter with spool clamps and then trim the fretboard edges and start the neck set. I forgot to take pictures of the spool clamp process but it is exactly what you think it is..just start at the neck block and then work your way around. This guitar doesn’t have plastic bindings so no need to perfectly line up the edges, just slam it back shut and get it close. Also, finding the appropriate neck angle is now possible since the box actually has an arch. Here, I just scoop the inside of the heel along the dovetail and then pull sandpaper along the heel where it meets the rim until the neck angle is in the ballpark. Now I can sand off all of the old finish and flush sand the edges of the top and back to the rim. Next dots, then frets, then I mask off the board to prep for paint. I start by laying down three thinned coats of clear gloss as wash coats, and then scuff this back after it is cured. Next, I apply a teardrop burst in tobacco brown using a detail HVLP gun, and then hose down the rim and neck with the same color. After the burst is applied I can use the full-size gun at low PSI and full fan to add the amber inside. For two-tone burst I prefer to work backwards so I can see in real time what I’m going to get. Then I mask off the top edge and airbrush on the “binding” to attain that original factory look (they probably hand painted the binding at the factory, I’m not very good at that technique). Now I can start to hose it down with clear nitro, full size gun, all the PSI, not even cutting my lacquer..real quick and dirty. Four coats, wait, scuff..four coats, wait, scuff..two coats, wait, final sand. Then I let it sit for a week before misting on two coats of Mohawk Dead Flat. And finished! It’s always a bit of a “fingers crossed” moment when you are finally putting on the strings and tuning it up. Don’t really know what you are going to end up with until you strum a couple of chords and see what you got. This guitar is by no means a vintage Gibson but it sounds very good! Nice chime and actually sounds rich and full when setup with 12’s. I know for sure that the modifications that I did to the neck made it much more rigid, and therefore are making the strings really jump..in my hands it doesn’t feel like other house brand guitars, this one feels very solid. @freonirons409 is gonna flip out! In the caning stage of this bed... to be clear I’m no cane master, just wanted to show the steps for anyone interested in doing it. It’s one of those things that seems a bit mysterious and daunting til you jump in. It’s pretty fun if you like working by eye and using hand tools. -Lay our the cane you’ve cut to about an inch oversize and soaked for 20-30 min, along with the reed spline that’ll hold it in place. -Pull the pieces parallel to the spline groove that are in the extra inch, carefully aligning it to be square, wedge it in place... -using another wedge push the cane in the spline groove all the way around and remove wedges. -using a sharp chisel or razor knife cut the excess just below the surface. CAREFULLY. Watch where the force would take the blade if it slipped and don’t put your other hand there. Trust me. -Hide glue or other water soluble (reversible) glue in the groove -don’t precut the spline, just cut a 45 by eye (see the reflection? You want that reflection looking square, most people can eyeball square). -it tightens drum tight when it dries! - @hancocksurfacestudio on Instagram

Usually this post would show the newest bike I picked up to start my next build, but were going to do something a little different this time around. Since I had everything to make another bike, minus the motor, I thought it was the perfect time to do a K12 RS transplant. Coming in at 130hp, it will be a healthy power increase over the K11/10. #clusterfuckfriday . This is a public service announcement, social media isn’t real. . This, my friends, is the result of a mistake I made a couple of weeks ago. Complete annihilation of a weeks worth of work with one stroke of a rasp. When machining the neck blank, I’d failed to notice that I’d routed the channels for the carbon graphite reinforcement too deep. This meant that I merrily carved straight into them during neck profiling. A Rookie mistake. . To make things worse, it was a hand cut fan fret fingerboard. The fingerboard was very special. The head plate ran through with continuous grain. I’d used an expensive truss rod AND I couldn’t even steam off the fingerboard to save it. All I could do was saw off the head cap, this was useless because I’d already destroyed the fingerboard it matched with in trying to remove it. A solid week of work, gone because I was probably too busy making Instagram stories to notice I’d forgotten how to use my callipers. . Fuck-ups are ubiquitous, the important thing is to not let them define you, but to embrace and learn from them and see them as an opportunity for growth, to be better than you were when you made the mistake in the first place. . It’s hard to write this without sounding contrived, but a poignant conversation with a dear colleague this week made me realise that it’s important to share the failures as well as the successes. This plan came together pretty slick! I wanted to add some stiffness to the rear brake without messing around with an additional spring on the brake pedal like on a normal setup. So I machined a piece to plug into the master cylinder and a clevis that would accept a 1” o.d. spring. Got it all mounted up tonight and it feels nice!🤘🏼 #CROIG005 - @jakedrummond22 on Instagram
