It’s 7am in Tel Aviv israel and I just woke up to 50 missed calls and 100 text messages I didn’t understand what’s going on. Once I understood i broke down. I loved this man. I remember @zachbraff invited me to see him on Broadway I went excited to support my friend who was the lead. But as I sat there and watched the show I was blown away by this actor. I couldn’t believe how talented he was. After the show we went backstage and I met him. I said nick you don’t know me. But if I ever get to do another movie you have a role in it. 반려견과 함께 화보를 찍자고 했을 때, 강형욱 훈련사는 먼저 두 가지 약속을 하자 했다. 개를 부르거나 억지로 쳐다보게 하지 말 것, 인위적인 포즈를 취하게 하지 말 것. 반려견을 동반한 촬영을 종종 하지만, 미처 생각해보지 못한 부분이었다. 그는 쉽지 않은 인터뷰이였지만, 그런 단호함이 좋은 결과를 가져올 때가 있다. 결과론적으로도, 그의 말대로 이 편이 훨씬 멋있었고. - 강형욱 훈련사의 보듬센터 사무실엔 개 잘 키우는 사회 만들기라는 표어가 걸려 있었다. 그와 인터뷰 중 마음을 쾅 울리던 인상적인 말들을 적는다. - 누구도 돌보지 않는 개가 있으면 누구도 돌보지 않는 사람이 있다. 외진 곳에 개가 묶여 있다면, 그곳엔 방치된 노인, 장애인, 잠긴 문 안에서 기다리는 아이들이 분명 있다. 드러나지 않을 뿐. 장애인 비율은 세계 어디나 비슷하지만 한국에서는 유독 장애인이 안 보이지 않나? 하루에 한 명도 보지 못한다. 존재하지 않기 때문이 아니라, 나오기 어렵기 때문이다. 약자가 받는 대우와 처한 환경이 그 나라의 지표나 다름없다. 내게는 개 잘 키우는 사회 만들기가 목표다. 거기서부터 시작해 나가는 거다.” - “아동, 노인, 나아가면 외국인 노동자나 장애인에 대한 이야기일 수 있다. 이 사회에서 설 자리가 없는 이들 말이다. 민식이법에 대한 반응도 안타깝다. 너무 당연한 건데, 한국에선 약자에 대한 보호 자체가 익숙하지 않은 일인 거다. 제인 구달의 책에서 봤는데, 콩고의 고릴라를 살리기 위한 방법 중 하나로 원주민의 생활을 안정시켰다고 한다. 각국의 부자들이 고릴라를 사냥하며 원주민에게 고릴라가 있는 곳을 안내하게 했는데, 원주민의 생활을 안정시키고 교육 환경을 제공하니 검은 돈에 현혹되지 않게 됐다더라. 개를 잘 키우려면 사람도 잘살아야 한다.” - 누구에게도 상처 받고 싶지 않고, 스스로를 방어하고 포장하며 살아왔던 사람들은 어딘가에 가서 고개를 처박고 혼자 가만히 있고 싶을 때가 있다. 그런 모습을 보여줄 수 있는 건 반려동물뿐이다. 이를테면 우리 아내는 내가 10년 째 입는 빨간 바지를 항상 내다버리라고 하는데, 우리 다올이나 바로는 그런 말 안 하거든. 하하하. 물론 아내가 날 사랑해서 그런 말을 한다는 건 알지. 하지만 개는 우리를 채점하지도 판단하지도 않는다. - 개는 왜 인간을 사랑할까. 마치 그렇게 태어난 것처럼. 사람들이 이 불가해한 사랑을 해독하지 못해 혼을 내고, 서열을 잡고, 혼란을 겪는 동안 ‘세상에 나쁜 개는 없다’며 강형욱 훈련사가 등장했고, 반려견을 존중하는 문화가 주류를 형성했지만 아직도 우리는 개를 다 이해하지 못했다. 강형욱 훈련사는 문제를 개가 아닌 인간에게서, 이 도시에서 찾아내며, 개 잘 키우는 사회가 곧 좋은 세상이 될 거라 믿는다. 동물과 약자가 받는 처우의 평균이 그 사회를 가리키는 지표이기 때문이다. 그렇다. 개는 훌륭하지만, 우리는 아직 멀었다. - @papersalt_ on Instagram
