2020 malt barley harvest wrapped up a few days ago. Still wheat and other grains to come off but all the malt barley is safely in storage with good quality. Farming is always an exercise in optimism. The hot, dry summer meant yield per acre was down but we got a high bushel weight. Bushel weight is how heavy a given volume of grain is. A higher weight means more larger individual grains which gives the right proportion of husk to starch for malting and ultimately brewing. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, FRESHFARMs Pop Up Food Hub (PUFH) has been working harder than ever to provide nutritious, local fruits and vegetables at no cost to our areas most vulnerable. The PUFH has scaled up by 600% this season, delivering bags of fresh produce to 2,200 people in DC and Virginia weekly, the majority of whom use nutrition benefits. Time to show our plants some tough love by slowly introducing them to the outside elements. We call this process hardening off. We are hardening off Tomatoes (Brickyard), Eggplants (Purple Shine, Rosalina), and Peppers (Touchdown Bell, Aruba Cubanelle, Cinder Jalapeno, Lola Banana) that well be planting in the 5th Avenue Community Garden and other greenspaces throughout the Good Life City. The goal of hardening off is to slowly expose the plants to the elements of the outdoor to the strengthen the plants. Hardening off reduces the growth rate and thicken the cuticle and waxy layers. It also stimulates root development, increases the amount of carbohydrates in tissues for food reserves, reduces the amount of freeze prone water cells, and develops login in the cell walls. About 1 to 2 weeks prior to transplanting outside, it is recommended to start the hardening off process. Start by placing plants outside during the warmer part of the day (typically between 12 - 5PM) for about 2 - 3 Hours; gradually increasing the amount of time each day. After working the plants up to 10 to 12 hours for a few days, leave the plants outside for 24 hours for a couple of days. Once you complete this, your plants are ready for transplanting. During this period of hardening off, gradually reduce how often you water; however, dont all the plants to wilt. It is also not recommended to fertilize the plants before or during the hardening off period. After all our stormy weather the cucumbers have taken a battering, we have taken a lot of care to get them back and fighting again, stringing up all new shoots carefully trimming and feeding them with @chefdancox special tea with 6 different herbs from the farm, including yarrow flowers, comfrey tips and nettle shoots and look how they are bouncing back. Not forgetting the insane hard work and care of all the staff and volunteers all tagged. A lot of damaged cukes, so we thought wed smash out some pickles and ferments. Dense plantings with the Paperpot around long season crops. Here are sugar snap peas, red russian kale, cruiser cilantro, deep purple scallions, red ace beets and salanova lettuce. We strayed from our standard 30ā bed to max out the greenhouse during the spring, and will convert the condensed pathways into late season peppers and tomatoes in a few short weeks! Iāve found that if we pick regularly, we can squeeze an early succession of cilantro between the kale and use it to shade for longer regrowth. Its been awhile since weve featured a Core Goods Member, and were excited to introduce Carrie Hohmann Campbell! . Carrie is from Oil City and studied English with a creative writing concentration at @alleghenycollege. She also received her MFA in poetry from the @nyuartsandscience Creative Writing Program and works as an Assistant Professor of English at @edinborou. Carrie has published two poetry chapbooks (the most recent being āDrawn to Extinctionā released by Finishing Line Press) and likes to write poetry and nonfiction about places she has traveled, nature, and attempts at homesteading. . Her āfood journeyā began at a young age when her dad grew veggies in his half acre plot. He inspired Carrie to appreciate how to raise good food and her mom inspired her by cooking with it. Along with her husband Jake Campbell, she became interested in producing pasture-raised meat and started with just 10 laying hens and 15 meat birds, which has grown to rabbits, pigs, meat chickens, laying hens, and occasionally ducks and turkeys. Carrie is trying to read up on permaculture to see how they can integrate its concepts into their garden and surrounding areas. . Carrieās family tries to eat as many local, seasonal, and minimally processed foods as possible for their health and the health of the planetāwhich is one reason they shop at Core Goods. That is how we would describe this season. ā¢unexpected that we couldnāt U-Pick (except for a few select days) ā¢unexpected we had no field trips ā¢unexpected we couldnāt open fun park till very end of season. ā¢unexpected that we would be able to sell 98% of our crop via pre-picked and not U-pick. ā¢unexpected that we spent most of season scheduling pick ups instead of spending it talking and visiting with people at farm. Not that you would, but donāt stop buying local produce just because summer is...you know. #harvest2020 š š„š§ š Hereās that gazpacho recipe: About 2 pounds ripe red tomatoes, cored and roughly cut into chunks 1 Italian frying (cubanelle) pepper or another long, light green pepper, such as Anaheim, cored, seeded and roughly cut into chunks 1 cucumber, about 8 inches long, peeled and roughly cut into chunks 1 small mild onion (white or red), peeled and roughly cut into chunks 1 clove garlic 2 teaspoons sherry vinegar, more to taste Salt 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, more to taste, plus more for drizzling. Step 1 Combine tomatoes, pepper, cucumber, onion and garlic in a blender or, if using a hand blender, in a deep bowl. (If necessary, work in batches.) Blend at high speed until very smooth, at least 2 minutes, pausing occasionally to scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula. Step 2 With the motor running, add the vinegar and 2 teaspoons salt. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil. The mixture will turn bright orange or dark pink and become smooth and emulsified, like a salad dressing. If it still seems watery, drizzle in more olive oil until texture is creamy. Step 3 Strain the mixture through a strainer or a food mill, pushing all the liquid through with a spatula or the back of a ladle. Discard the solids. Transfer to a large pitcher (preferably glass) and chill until very cold, at least 6 hours or overnight. Step 4 Before serving, adjust the seasonings with salt and vinegar. If soup is very thick, stir in a few tablespoons ice water. Serve in glasses, over ice if desired, or in a bowl. A few drops of olive oil on top are a nice touch. - @juliamoskin on Instagram

Itās been awhile since we gave a farm update! Summer crops like tomatoes and peppers are still around, but waning. Our onions and garlic have been cured, winter squash is on its way, and rainbow carrots abound. Our veggie team has been busy making compost, planting cover crop, and building two new caterpillar tunnels for next season...all while growing and harvesting crops for our CSA members. Needless to say, weāre in awe. Livestock has been super busy, too. Our final round of chickens has been processed, our lambs have been weaned from their mothers, and livestock manager Nicole is prepping for cattle breeding. We have lots of great grilling and stewing meat for sale at the farm store, and are additionally proud to have donated hundreds of pounds of beef this season to emergency feeding partners. Come visit our farm store to buy produce, meat, and regionally produced goods! Proud to say we just harvested our best crop of carrots, ever! We tried a new technique: We seeded in our lightest soil, added a few beet seeds, watered well, covered with plastic tarp, checked for beet germination and when the beets were visible, we flame weeded. š„š„š„ This killed the beets and all of the other weed seed and left the carrots primed for growth without any competition.
