The national outpouring of solidarity with BLM has me recounting my own experience with racism and vowing never to be silent again. A few years ago I was employed by @cinta_salon where after a few months, I raised concerns to management about coworker Alexandra McGregor (on IG as Mcgeezy or Hairisprettycool). After servicing an Asian American client, she went to the salon back bar and called the client a “Chinky Bitch”. . No action was taken for this and I resigned shortly after, tired of being subjected to daily microaggressions by her and feeling unsupported by management. Months later, she saw me at a public establishment and yelled racist slurs at me over and over “You’re a Chinky Bitch!” and followed it with a physical assault. I reported it to the Mission precinct where the investigating officer pursued it as a Hate Crime. I emailed Cinta Gibbons, managers Sara Watson and Mariela Bermudez expecting them to at least acknowledge the situation. I received no response. A year later, I had to block Alexandra McGregor on IG after she tried to to contact me. . Later I learned Cinta promoted her and employed her for several years after. This is a company who oversees countless employees between their downtown salon as well as thousands of students at 2 of their beauty schools in SF and San Jose. They had 2 chances to condemn these acts of racism/hate as well as uphold a Zero Tolerance policy for them but failed. Their silence and inaction spoke volumes and only enabled her to continue her behavior. . Cinta Salon’s recent IG post depicting a graphic of raised fists with different skin tones with a hollow “We’re All in This Together” feels empty. . As an Asian American, as a consumer, as an ally to the marginalized, I want to ensure that people/places I support with my time and money are not ones who support racism in any form and I pledge to call it out when I see it. I’m hopeful that now more than ever, many others will do the same. .
