About an hour ago I received a call from my mom informing me that my grandmother had passed. I’m not so much sad that she’s gone as much as I’m more so in amazement that God would bless me with someone like her for (almost) 32 years. I’m thinking about all of the lessons that were learned while watching her cook or the knowledge she dropped on me in the middle of a game of speed or gin rummy. I think about one of our last conversations and how that helped mold me into the man I am today...”baby, they’ll be mad at you, they’ll hate you for it, some will despise you...but you have to focus on your happiness before their’s. No matter what you do, choose your happiness first. Never give up, never fold, and if they have a problem, they can come talk to me. I love you”. I can hear it like it was yesterday. Plus with her having Alzheimer’s, to say those words in a moment of clarity, it hits me deeper. I’m sure I’ll shed tears as the days go on but I’m just happy she’s finally at peace. The woman I was raised by has been gone for a while now (due to the Alzheimer’s) so it’s been an easier transition for me in regards to letting her go. Hell, I’m happy to have had her at all. She was my guardian angel before she left this world and I know she still got me now more so than ever. Now it’s time to get you back to New Orleans so we can throw you a parade through the French Quarters. . . . Diddy Dea, I will always and forever love and cherish you baaaaaaaaaby!
