Soooo yesterday was my 30th birthday. I had plans for beautiful, picturesque moments all day with my boys and friends, celebrating in my favourite place. But in true 2020 style, that all blew up. Fast. Anyone who knows us, knows Bud is genuinely our child. He’s the love of our lives, and the centre of our family. We’ve been planning to bring our prairie boy to the ocean for ages, cause the water and swimmies are his absolute favourite things ever. Sure enough, Bud has been obsessed with the ocean from his first plunge a couple days ago when we got off the ferry. What us Alberta folk weren’t aware of though, is something called saltwater toxicity. This became something very real, very quick, when Bud turned into an uncontrollable hose from both ends at the beach yesterday. Normally a pup with a stomach of steel (literally; he’s eaten a kg bag of chocolate covered almonds without so much as a jitter), this obviously had us worried. An hour hike out up to the car, an hours drive to any animal hospital, and zero cell service while our poor guy spiralled really just wrapped the whole situation up to create the perfect storm. We finally got him to an animal hospital in Langford, who took amazing care of him. We were there for 3 hours though; every second of which I bawled and hyperventilated, inevitably playing out every tragic scenario in my head over and over. What a way to spend a birthday. The vet eventually cleared him after tests and some treatment, and sent us home with meds and an exhausted, stinky pup. I swear, I’ve never been so happy to see him. Another 24 hours until he’s completely in the clear, and soooo many naps for this exhausted boy and his emotionally and physically exhausted parents (seriously, who the fuck was I to want to hike on my birthday?! If you know, you know). Two years ago today I brought this little dude home. He was only a few pounds, and he nestled up in my arms in a blanket as we drove back to my apartment. That night, we climbed up the ladder to my lofted bed (LOL imagine doing that today) and he made himself comfortable right on my head. Two years later hes still climbing into my bed (now in a new apartment without a lofted bed, and a nice set of piggy stairs) and snuggling up right next to me every night.
