Despite plans to send humans back to the Moon by the year 2024, very little is known about the effects of space radiation the astronauts will be exposed to on a daily basis while bouncing across the lunar surface. A new study is the first to measure exactly how much radiation humans would be exposed to on a daily basis while exploring the Moon in an effort to find ways to mitigate the effects on human health. Their results found that the Moon has an average daily radiation dose equivalent to 1,369 microsieverts per day, which is about 2.6 times higher than the amount the crew of the @iss is exposed to on a daily basis. Meet scientist, engineer, and astronaut Ellen Ochoa, who was the first Hispanic woman in space on STS-56 Discovery. Ochoas groundbreaking career sent her on four separate space missions and eventually to the helm of NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) as its first Hispanic director. But her road to becoming an astronaut wasnt a simple one. After applying, she got an interview at Johnson Space Center, but later came the news; she was not selected. “Some people have described it as, ‘I failed.’ I didn’t really view it that way,” Ochoa reflected. “I tried to turn it into, what is it that I could I do that would make me a better candidate?” Ochoa took a different job at NASA and earned her private pilot’s license. Then, she applied again with some new skills on her resume. This time, she got in. Several years of training later, Ochoa was aboard Discovery, studying the Earth’s ozone layer. Getting a chance to conduct experiments in space, against a background of the Earth 200 miles down below, was more than she could have ever expected. “It was not just about experiencing space,” she said. “We were up there for a purpose. We had people counting on us. Let’s go. Astronaut Tom Stafford surveys things during water egress training for Gemini 6, Aug 1965. Mr. Stafford flew the near 26-hour mission with Project Mercury veteran Wally Schirra. He later flew on Gemini 9A in ‘66 with Eugene Cernan. The pair would fly again on Apollo 10 (also with John Young). Stafford commanded the historic mission, which was the first to fly a Lunar Module & the 2nd to orbit the moon. A10 came within 9 miles of the lunar surface. In 1975, he commanded the Apollo Soyuz Test Project. Astronaut Stafford logged an amazing 507 hours in space during his career. - On March 18, 1965, Alexey Leonov stepped outside of Voskhod-2 to begin the worlds first spacewalk. Once in space, his suit over-inflated, making it too big and stiff to re-enter the airlock. He had to use a valve to slowly depressurize his suit until it was small enough to squeeze back in.

I have never, not once in my life, had a phobia. Until now. And I’m gonna be honest, I never understood them, I always thought “get over it, it’s just a spider, etc. walk away.” Until l, of course myself, became severely claustrophobic. To the point my entire body broke out in sweat and I was drenched within 30 seconds and my face looked like a very ripe tomato...and I almost passed out while trying on my finished spacesuit and helmet for the first time. It is not just mental, it is very physical. BUT, our mental minds do control a lot, if not everything. After six months, I was not able to overcome my claustrophobia, but I was able to come to a type of meeting of the minds with it. When we calm our minds and sit with the fear, NOT try and push it away, we can sit with it in a different way, that makes it “doable”. Playing an astronaut in AWAY made me push into the sharp edges in a way I never thought it would. This was such an important lesson for me...in so many ways. I hope that in sharing this you might feel less alone in whatever it is that takes over your mind and therefore body. What languages do you speak⁉️🗣 ⠀⠀⠀ 26 September is European Day of Languages and as an international organization with 22 Member States, we know how important communication is. ⠀⠀⠀ Maybe one of the best examples of multiculturalism is the @iss where astronauts come from different backgrounds and speak different languages but all work towards a common goal. ⠀⠀⠀ Last year @astro_luca celebrated European Day of Languages from the Station saying: Nine friends, four different languages: and all speak at least two of those. As today marks the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, we honor our client Neil Armstrong in making history as the first human ever to walk the moon. After traveling for 76 hours, Apollo 11 entered the orbit of the moon and soon after, Neil took the first step with the whole world watching on television. Throughout Neils life he has spent a total of two and a half years on the moon studying and collecting samples.
