Thats a minimum of 5 a year including 12 with mental illness, 6 unknown mental state, 1 drug or alcohol use. 4 were unarmed including Michael Ramos who was shot and killed on April 24, 2020. As one protestor put it - “Don’t talk to us about looting. You are the looters. You have been looting from black people. You looted from the Native Americans. Don’t talk to us about violence, you taught us violence.” George Floyd’s final words “I can’t breathe” echoed the same words of Eric Garner. Garner was killed 6 years ago by a N.Y. police officer (over selling loose cigarettes) there were protests then also, not much has changed. Both Republicans and Democrats are responsible for the current crises/rebellion. Both Republicans and Democrats have militarized the police and most cities can point to a series of police killings with few prosecutions or convictions. In Austin, police were firing on demonstrators with “non lethal” weapons from atop IH35 – kinda like a turkey shoot and they have critically hurt innocent people. Solo show “New York in the distance” @Perrotin New York. When I started painting in Bushwick, I was fascinated by the trucks parked in the empty streets around the studio, especially the trailers which I saw as minimalist sculptures, raw Donald Judds or Richard Serras on wheels. Their logos like Ed Ruschas painted on steel spoke to me as an abstract language. And at the same time, they were just trucks, temporarily stopped on their road to nowhere. The man was already in cuffs so that means he is no longer a threat. But 3 officer decided to put all their weight on a handcuffed man for more than 10min. I can’t breathe he complained several times, everything hurts he complained several times but they ignored him and told the crowd that were pleading to them to stop to get back. The officer standing even said don’t do drug at some point. The deed is done and now the police department have distanced themselves from this officers, which means they will have to get an expensive lawyer to represent them and pay out of pocket. Which means all their savings/401k/house re-mortgage will all go to the Lawsuit trying to stay out of jail or get lesser time. At the end, they will lose everything trying to prove something to people that don’t matter. On Wednesday July 10, 2019, a Boston EMS ambulance staffed with two veteran EMTs was transporting an individual to the hospital. As they approached the hospital, the individual suddenly became aggressive towards the crew. This resulted in serious injuries to the crew: physically, emotionally and mentally. One EMT needed emergent surgery upon arrival to the hospital from the injuries sustained from this attack. Their identity will remain private due to the nature of this heinous crime. There is a diversity of people out there. I have a lot of loved ones who are out there trying to deescalate situations. Often time its the things you dont see. Detective Specialist Stuart Barksdale came across an elderly female whose wheelchair battery ran empty before she was able to get home. Stu pushed her for several blocks to get her home safe and sound. Stu didnt know he was being photographed, nor did he ask for this to be brought to the publics attention. It’s my birthday! I turn 30 today! Birthdays used to mean a lot more to me before this revolution. I used to plan for them for months. I’d make sure I was dressed up and dolled up for the ‘gram photos at my birthday parties. I’d care how many people reached out to me that day. On Saturday, May 30th, our Associate Director, Nathan Spencer, received a text message from his wife. The message included a picture of Raleigh police in riot gear boarding a GoRaleigh bus bound for Downtown. Throughout the next couple days, during the height of the Downtown protests following the killing of George Flloyd by a Minneapolis police officer, reporters and friends shared similar photos on social media. Nathan, Vice-Chair of the Raleigh Transit Authority (RTA), brought the matter to the attention of the RTA Chair Tolulope Omokaiye and fellow RTA member Brian L Burnett. Together, they drafted a letter seeking answers to why GoRaleigh buses were used to transport police into a potentially dangerous situation and whether drivers — a workforce that is overwhelmingly African-American — were being protected to the same degree as officers in riot gear. As advocates for sustainable growth and safe, reliable public transit, we thank these members of the RTA for asking the hard questions that needed to be asked and for committing to the safety and well-being of our city’s transit workers. R.I.P. @samuelgarciasanchez As hard as the industry can be, as hard as you push and “pay” and rack your brain to try and “advance”- it’s often just a few genuine gestures from strangers on your peripheral (without proposition) that make the most difference: long lasting and unusually for free. Simply: you create something, someone appreciates it- adds to it, makes it better- and without you asking. In 2002/3 I wrote a song called, “Constance” for my first solo record. No label and no money, young and just moved to LA. I put the song out on MySpace (yes haha) and it got a little attention but not enough to give it wings. I produced and wrote the song and as it was my first solo attempt I had little confidence in its reception. Along comes this dude... a director young as me from Chicago who heard the song, loved it, and wanted to create a music video... for... free. I didn’t really believe it, I said “ok” and let it be. A month or so later it was done. This dude hired actors, film crew, shot and edited and handed me a final version out of nowhere. Just because he appreciated my work. It truly is as simple as that. Without this video I don’t believe the message would have had the impact it did, I wouldn’t have been able to gain the interest of @rawkusrecords , I wouldn’t have had MTV play (then banned), VH1 play, large interest and relationships with non-profits, and who knows... maybe not much of a solo career at all. You send thousands of demos, emails, and dollars into the industry pit to no avail and it’s the simple gestures like these that matter most. He was a guy full of passion and using all at his disposal to see something happen. I have a great memory from this guy- watching him try and fix a printing mistake for a benefit show, dying 100+ white t shirts blue in his apartment just 5 hours before show time: he wanted to please for sure. He drove me to the show with blue dye all over his arms and hands laughing and with a pile of damp multi-shaded blue “merchandise” in the back seat. We mourn with PO Masotto and his family. • K9 Abe was named in honor of Detective Walton who served with the New York City Police Department for 12 years and was assigned to the Street Crime Unit. Detective Walton was shot and killed as he attempted to stop a robbery in progress while off-duty. He is survived by his wife, son and two daughters. K9 Abe carried on his legacy proudly. . The first leg of our cross country trip began in Phoenix, Arizona, and ended with our two family members @nikkoaxzul and @niyen.k arrested and detained with 3 felony charges and 1 misdemeanor for Nikko and 3 felony charges for Niyen. As you can see in the video, the killer cops point blank pepper sprayed and shot at @nikkoaxzul with rubber bullets 8 times with his hands up. Our warrior @niyen.k was peacefully protesting in front of enemy lines before the cops snatched her up and arrested her. Mit ca. 4/5 Jahren bin ich das erste mal aktiv mit Rassismus in Kontakt gekommen. Es hat mich damals genauso getroffen wie heute und war genauso unbegreiflich. Doch da ich zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht so viel über diese Welt wusste bin ich davon ausgegangen dass sich dieses Problem irgendwann von alleine löst. Ich hatte/habe so viele Freunde aus allen möglichen Teilen der Welt und konnte mir einfach nicht vorstellen dass wir uns wenn wir mal erwachsen sind Aufgrund unserer Herkunft ernsthaft diskriminieren. Naja, man wird erwachsen... Mittlerweile leben wir in einer Welt in der sowas wie die Geschichte in dem Video gestern, in ein paar Wochen leider schon wieder vergessen wird. Wer denkt das im Jahr 2020 Rassismus kein Thema mehr ist lebt in einer Blase oder ist noch nie ernsthaft damit in Kontakt gekommen. Ich bin grade in einem Alter in dem viele meiner Freunde Kinder haben die bald in das selbe Alter kommen das ich damals hatte und die Vorstellung dass sie in 20/25 Jahren die selbe traurige Erkenntnis haben, weil immer noch Menschen sterben müssen weil Sie anders aussehen, macht mich unfassbar traurig und wütend...
